Zenefits is a cloud-based human resources information system (HRIS) that features user dashboards, core human resources, benefits administration, onboarding and employee scheduling.

When new employees are hired, HR professionals using Zenefits only need to complete five online fields to begin the onboarding process. Employees sign all agreements online, and Zenefits can automatically process their information. When employees leave, HR can remove them from payroll and benefits and initiate COBRA setup with a single process. Zenefit also offers an employee self-service portal.

Zenefits can integrate with payroll, health insurance and other systems, and users can also set up new payroll, insurance, retirement plans and more. Zenefits has a development team that makes weekly changes based on user feedback. They also have a team of in-house HR, payroll and insurance specialists to answer questions via phone or email. Zenefits also provides mandatory services which must be purchased with the software.

Basic and useful

Pros

Simplistic and easy to use. Easy to teach others the functionality. With copious training modules it offers a comprehensive guide/walkthrough.

Cons

A little to simple. The regular user barely has anything on their virtual portal compared to the admin.

Overall it helps with productivity

Pros

We have been with Zenefits for a little over a year. Before then, we kept track of employee time off with paper sheets submitted to accounting, then a master spreadsheet of all employee time off. I like Zenefits better because it's easier to keep track of comp time, and easier for employees to request time off and keep track of their balances. I also have it syncing to a Google calendar so everyone can see who is out of the office. Their new one-on-one meetings part of the software is something we will explore next.

Cons

There's not much I don't like, in fact, we need to take more advantage of what we are paying for.

Didn't work for us and little communication between departments

Great until this past year. Not only to the software loose functionality they charged us for services we never utilized and couldn't utilize.

Pros

We were huge fans of Zenefits up until this year. They handled our onboarding, health insurance, and synced with our payroll

Cons

The changes to drop supporting 3rd party health care providers and the inability to create an other income box for special tax designations left us having to cancel the service.

First HRIS

so far so good this is our first HRIS system and it is working well. We cover a large area and often need access to employee file and or qualification and Zenefits meets the needs. Plus it reminds manager and employees when qualification need to be renewed

Great HR Software

Pleasure to use and very simple to manage employees. Employees seem to like the mobile apps too for clocking out.

Pros

Makes payroll + benefits a breeze. Onboarding is really nice as well. Really enjoy zenefits relative to old our HR software.

Cons

Sometimes can be a little bit slow. Mobile app (Android on Galaxy s9+ ) crashes when trying to log hours for some employees. iOS is better.

Love hate relationship

Listen, I'd still recommend them. I use the app almost daily, I log on at least a few times a week. It's a necessary tool in our belt and I'd be sad to lose them.

Pros

Ok, so it's great that Zenefits centralizes all of your HR needs into one system. It's certainly easier than logging into individual insurance sites. I like that the app loads quickly and can quickly give me info on my commuter benefits balance or show me my insurance info. It's also very easy to log personal days. And it's nice seeing the structure of the company within the website -- it's great for transparency.

Cons

Sometimes the zenefits team can't answer your question -- especially when it comes to insurance brouhaha. I nearly had a meltdown this past summer when my insurance company INSISTED I wasn't covered, but zenefits insisted that I was. No one would speak to each other, and only after a month of emails and calls was it ironed out. I can't say that this is zenefits' fault -- but it was annoying how deeply unhelpful they were.

Horrible HR Product!

Our company is leaving Zenefits and will not recommend to anyone ever!!!! Any positive reviews must be from the company themselves. Do not be fooled!

Pros

Nothing that any other HR product doesn't already have. The are no options on Zenefits that I would recommend.

Cons

Horrific customer support! You can't get an answer from anyone on any subject. Their chats tell you to watch their basic specific videos, the call center puts you on hold for a minimum of 25 minutes and then you still don't get a resolution. Emails don't get answered either. So basically there is no customer support. I have about 5 unanswered questions with support right now and I am not expecting to get one.

This was disappointing to say the least. It appeared that employees would have a lot of access to and control over their information. Constant updates and system outages proved too much for our staff and we had to let this go.

Flexible and simple platform

Pros

After researching different HR/Payroll systems we chose Zenefits because it brought many things into one management hub, simplifying labor on our end, without locking things down too much. While other providers restrict options more (particularly the benefits aspects are more all or nothing), Zenefits has a more a la carte model. For sure, it would be simplest to manage all things through the platform, but sometimes the timing is not great to make major changes or there are other circumstances that make it beneficial to not do so (for example, we had no interest in changing our major medical offering).

Cons

Pretty significant setup fees. The way Zenefits withdraws wages and then payroll taxes doesn't cleanly align with bookkeeping. It requires a bit more manual work to separate out than i would like. Overall though, there's a lot to like.

Ideal system of record for small to mid sized companies

Overall, as I learn the system and am able to customize the areas that I need, I am pretty satisfied. i will be rolling it out to the team members before the year end. I would have liked to have an implementation team that owned the employee and manager training, but for the cost, it works out.

Pros

It is so easy to use- you really don't even need training, it is very intuitive .

Cons

I would have liked to have compatibility for file transfers with my payroll system. I would also like an easier integration with Jazz.

Zenefits payroll is very bulky. It is also limited and lacks functionality.

Zenefits is pretty low-tech masquerading as some high tech Payroll software. There's nothing that high tech about them and just about every person on the customer service side lacks basic knowledge of its functionality. It is a lot more confusing than Gusto and is nothing more than a series of modules built on Django, Javascript and jQuery with very basic databases that run on cron jobs. I can live with the product that Zenefits has despite all of its shortcomings but the people behind it need much better training. Their fake enthusiasm coupled with little to no knowledge of the platform, hr, or payroll is a huge turn off.

Pros

Time & Attendance: Users are able to seamlessly clock in and out from their phones once they get familiar with Zenefits.
PTO: PTO is simple and streamlined.

Cons

Customer Service: The chat agents are a waste of time to talk to. The phone agents know very little but can at least put you on hold, ask their supervisor and learn as they go along.
Pay Runs are akward but here is the process:

1. You need to approve your employees timesheets.
2. Timesheets need to be pushed to payroll. This requires some time. Looks like its set up on a cron job so if you just missed it you need to wait a few minutes for it to get pushed.
3. From there you add the deductions and reimbursements. If you don't have the types set up, you'll need to step away and set them up. There's no memo you can input once you add a deduction. For example, if its an employee purchase it doesn't allow you to describe what was purchased.
4. You approve the pay run, push it through and wait for confirmation. Another cron job most likely.

PTO Policy is there but since its so easy to do, its subject to a lot of abuse.

You cannot reimburse an employee in net earnings. The functionality just isn't there.

You need to select whether employees clock in through an iPad or their phones. You can't mix and match.

The app for an administrator is absolutely useless. There's not much you can do as an admin from your phone.

Navigating is bulky. Instead of selecting your employee and seamlessly flowing through everything that relates to them, you need to first pick which module you want to use and toggle back and forth between modules.

Overall, it has been a good tool. Outside of some customer service issues, I have not had any complaints.

Pros

This software is visually appealing and very user-friendly. It has many features all in one place.

Cons

The customer service is not as good as I've experienced with other platforms. You can chat in or call them directly, but the hold times are often very long and the quality of service is hit or miss.

Zenefits eliminates the awkward PTO request to your boss!

Great way to document and request PTO and other benefits related information.

Pros

Simple log in to website. PTO request or other request are very straight forward. You can also see all supported holidays already listed.

Cons

No documentation as to when submitted. I submitted a PTO request back in August and it was approved months later, but I had no proof when I sent it.

Overall a great HR platform. Switching back and forth between your personal user dashboard as well as the admin dashboard is very nice. The reports are great and the customizable reports are perhaps its greatest quality.

Cons

Sometimes the system will run quite slowly. Additionally, it misses out on many other integrations. It is clearly a software for smaller businesses as it simply doesn't have the integrations to other HR components to be considered an all-in-one solution that larger orgs need.

Easy to Learn

Zenefits is a great value for the money, and when it comes to negotiating prices they truly want to ensure their customer is happy. I've been really happy with the system and am glad to see they are enhancing things like their Benefits and Rehire features. It's a good thing!

Pros

Zenefits takes next to no time to learn--it's extremely intuitive and takes a lot of the guesswork out of communicating new processes to employees. I like how you can easily customize fields to get the data you want for each person, and how simple it is to update time off balances and requests for employees. It didn't take me long to get up and running with this system which was huge--our company is growing too fast for me to need 6 months to learn the HRIS. Also, benefit enrollment is stupidly easy for employees, I get barely any questions.

Cons

This software could improve on their reporting capabilities--but that's honestly what I would expect for a platform designed for small- to mid-sized organizations. For instance, their pre-built reports are great (turnover, headcount, etc.) but you can't add just one more field to them if you want it. Little thing but makes a difference if your manager wants to see something more specific.

Zenefits is for geared towards the tech-savvy millenial age of human resources and payroll managers. My small 501c3 non-profit no longer subscribes.

We hired a new finance director, an older male, and he is very much old school and didn't see the benefit. Whereas, the previous younger female director thought it was valuable for keeping her priorities straight.

Pros

No hand-holding by HR as far as completing documentation for new hires (onboarding). Employees are responsible for submitting their documents via their personal log-in.

Cons

Makes the onboarding process very impersonal. I had an issue downloading old payroll stubs (for an important loan) and needed a separate password. Our finance/HR person was out of the office and I had no support form Zenefits.
