Bloomerang Software


 

Created in 2012, Bloomerang is a solution for small and growing nonprofits. It enables users to view an organization's donor records, track the best time to contact each donor and measure a donor's engagement level to make it easier for users to know when someone should be contacted.

This proactive approach can help simplify maintaining and increasing donor loyalty, as well as revenue. 

Donor retention rates can be accessed at a glance from the Donor Retention Cockpit, where each donor has a profile of their giving summary. Engagement levels are ranked by “cold”, "cool", "warm" and “hot.” 

Bloomerang is a cloud-based system and allows for unlimited users. The system is a particularly good fit for small to mid-sized nonprofits in a handful of verticals, including animal welfare, faith-based organizations, and human services.

Bloomerang was a Startup of the Year finalist for the TechPoint Mira Awards.

I would say, my experience using Bloomerang has been wonderful, donors no longer leave comments in my site mail on how to donate.

What i like most about this soft ware is that it focuses on the core features required for a proper fund raising, without complicating things for donors.

Cons

The software is very ok, but I believe there is still room for improvement in aspect of security. this would help build confidence in users.

I researched CRM software options extensively last year. Started with over 40 options and narrowed it down one by one to Bloomerang. I have been so, so happy with my decision. A great company!

Pros

Price! You get so much for such a low price.
Easy to use--volunteers without training have been successfully helping me with entry.
Customer Service- phone support worth EVERY penny. They are so knowledgable and patient and always calm, polite and respectful. I LOVE them!
Our auditor was impresses with what I could do with Bloomerang!

Cons

I really can't think of any real cons. I really want a shopping cart feature but no one has that option so I can't complain.

Bloomerang non-profit donor tracking

I am a long time user of this product, and I would totally recommend this product to anyone considering switching or even the first time donor database user. This product has features that will help the seasoned non-profit and the start-up alike.

Pros

- Its integrated with other 3rd party products
- I can easily incorporate a number of things (through code snippets generated from by the Bloomrang database) directly into my website
- Good and responsive customer service
- I like the initial sign-in dashboard

Cons

- I wish there were a more granular control of users ability to see different parts of the database (i.e., donations, anonymous gifts, etc..)
- It's great that there are so many options, but it would be great to "disable" certain features I don't use
- I wish the task aspect had more features

Very intuitive and easy to use. Love that the users have input on the product roadmap and future enhancements.

Pros

Report are easily run so you can really dig into your data... and if you need help, its only a chat away. Engagement score and highlights on the timeline let you know at a glance important info about your donors ! Online form integration is great and its very easy to customize.

Cons

Needs more flexibility in creating and editing thank you/recipet letters. Still have to export and mail merge to get a custom font and wording.

Bloomerang is the easiest to use, and includes features that are based on what fundraisers really need -- not all the random extras that seem cool but are just useless clutter. Imports are easy, reports are easy, even acknowledgement letters are easy and integrated. Software updates are automatic and seamless, so you never have to mess with them or risk being out of date. The customer support can't be beat. I've transitioned two organizations to Bloomerang, and will hopefully be transferring a third within the year!

Cons

The only thing I'd love to see change is for acknowledgement letters to be exported in Word format instead of only PDF. That said, even the PDF is highly customizable before it exports, so it's a teeny tiny itsy bitsy problem.

There are not a lot of pros to this extremely simple and basic software. As a small nonprofit just starting out, we thought kind of database would be useful, but it has such limited capability and is not user-friendly at all. There are much better products out there with much more capability and donation and social media integration.

Cons

Our experience with this company has been extremely negative and has caused a lot of stress and problem where it was not needed. While they provide adequate online support, as a 20-year advancement professional who has used many CRMs, this software and its capability is very limited. Our account manager and the CEO have also proven to be inflexible and unkind.  

We received our renewal invoice 26 days before it was due after discovering Bloomerang was sending the renewal invoice to an employee of ours that left 3 years ago. As a result, we asked for a waiver for the 45-day cancellation clause because of the circumstances. We are a small non-profit and they would not even talk with us. After myself and my colleagues called 7 times to get some answers, I sent a contract cancellation letter outlining the lack of customer service by not paying attention to this matter. We were not happy that it took almost a week for someone to even call us back and that was because I wanted to cancel my service. They would not even discuss a resolution with us and were happy to seek legal action if necessary.
We have canceled our contract but not after having to pay for a full year and on top of that Bloomerang had the nerve to charge a service fee because we canceled out auto-renew. As a small non-profit that helps alleviate blindness in the world, that actuates to 103 people we could have given sight to. They absolutely do not conduct good business and I will never use or recommend this company to anyone.

Only worth it if you can't afford something better

It's relatively easy to use out of the box. It's not very customize-able, which is a good thing if you are new to databases and a frustrating thing if you need the software to do anything beyond the very basics. And you can get a 1-year license through Tech Soup if you're a nonprofit. That's the biggest plus.

Cons

I've spoken with folks at Bloomerang, and find them incredibly inflexible and unhelpful when it comes to taking customer feedback. They have a product that only works for the most basic kind of record keeping. For example, we used it with a client that works exclusively with LGBTQ folks, and there was no way to alter the gender options. They also REFUSE to create an integration for QuickBooks Online, opting to only integrate with a GL software called Aplos, which is used by very few nonprofits.

Actually, most concerning is probably that they only offer two levels of permissions. When I asked if they were working on this, the response was that they were "tracking which additional user permission settings customers need". This company is not new though, so I really suspect they don't actually care about working on this.

I found Bloomerang frustrating at basically every level in trying to customize its offerings and shape it to work for our client. I think they are switching to a new database next year, in part because of the gender weirdness and in part because it's just not a great database for a growing organization.

You’ll be happy to know that we are actively building a QuickBooks Online integration. We’ve also added a third user permission as of 3/26/18 that will allow only certain users to add, edit, and delete transactions, and are actively building more!

I’d love to know more about your ideas for how we can improve the gender options in Bloomerang. We’re sensitive to this (it’s why we’ve done things like adding the honorific “Mx” as an option).

As someone who has only been using the product since November, I really enjoy the ease of use. I recieved very little formal training, but was able to figure out most of what I needed and if ever I had a question, the online chat helped!

Cons

I would love a way to run a list to see all the emails that have bounced, instead of looking at each individual report, or if the system would label the email as BAD email if it gets an error notice.

The user interface is so pretty! At first, I mistook it for simplistic, but Bloomerang is actually a quite robust donor database. Don't be fooled by how easy it is to consume the information. It follows Apple design theology, obviously, which makes it delightful to use. It's definitely taken our donor communication up notch. The timeline is great and we love the engagement level tool.

Cons

Bloomerang fits our needs as an organization pretty well. We haven't fully configured the volunteer management portion and there seems to be less support with that. We'd also prefer that the dashboard was able to be customized for each staff login. We'd also like to be connected to Instagram.

Pros

The dashboard is well designed. Easy to identify campaign progress immediately upon logging in. Integration to the website for payments is pretty straightforward. If you are new to using a donor database system this is a great product.

Cons

Cannot integrate Paypal as a secondary payment option. I would like it better if I got a notification when I logged in letting me know there were new online donations since the last login. I had to configure Stripe to email me in order to keep up with that aspect.

Pros

Bloomerang is an amazing system that works fluidly once you get used to it. It keeps everything organized, keeps up with notes, provides information to all users in your company, and best of all, has the best customer service you could ask for.

Cons

The letter generating part of the software could use some work. You only have one interface to work with and can't create something outside of the program and then import it well. It's very limited. Generating reports can get confusing, but you always have help available if needed! The system needs a separation of users desperately. Some users should not be able to change information, yet access it.

Pros

It’s easy to see important information at a glance and find the info your looking for. The dashboards and timeline features are incredibly helpful in tracking supported activity individually, and the reporting feature allows us to pull any information we need for group analysis.

Cons

There is limited integration for event management, which is a key part of fundraising. Even using the software to sell tickets and track interactions was not ideal as we had to go out of the system to do that effectively.

I'm just really glad we found this program.

Pros

Our growing Non profit needed a program to organize and streamline our processes. Bloomerang offers all of that and more. We are so thankful that Bloomerang also offers different price points for a growing non profit we need the system but can not afford high fees. Their grow version is perfect, we have access to all the awesome tools to help our non profit grow and in a few years be able to afford a more advanced version of Bloomerang. We are very happy with this program, from donor management to volunteer management and newsletters. Bloomerang does it all. The best part everything is the customization. You can make it the best program for your non profit.

Cons

In regards to the templates for newsletters there isn't a lot to choose from, but something that Bloomerang really reinforces is less is more with newsletters so a streamlined and easy to read newsletter template is important. They know what they are doing.

Bloomerang really listens to the customer. In the past year, we have submitted our suggestions for changes that would make the day to day operations more efficient. Several of those suggestions have already been implemented.

Pros

This product is easy to customize and use. It provides everything we need to successfully fundraise-email communications with constituents, online fundraising, credit card processing, scheduling follow up tasks, event management, interfacing with website and more. The customer service from the first contact to now has been outstanding. Questions and concerns are answered promptly.

Cons

I wish that we could customize the background color of the records. The dark gray is rather dismal. A brighter or lighter color would be more eye appealing.

This software is easy to use and has many customizable features that allow you to keep track of donations and donor profiles.

Pros

It has a user-friendly interface with a lot of functionality. There is an ability to customize many of Bloomerang's features so that you can properly record and track donations and gifts to your organization. For example, we have customized the groups categories to include how many years each donor was involved in an annual event we host. These features not only enable us to keep track of donations, but to pull more detailed reports that we can then use for targeted marketing campaigns.

Cons

I have a few complaints about the software's features although they may be considered as "areas for improvement" since they stem from my experience with other softwares' features. The first is an autofill for city/state based on zip code. It would also be helpful is the reports had the option to be organized by time data. When exporting acknowledgements using Bloomerang's template, they automatically convert to PDF which does not allow users to edit letters individually (for this reason we export to Excel and mail merge individually).

We were having trouble directly reaching donors until we finally set up software to help us track our donors and be able to target specific groups, and reach out to those who had not donated in a specific time period.

Cons

The big issue we have run into is that it is not compatible to directly import / export information from out accounting software. This may be a function of the older accounting software we use, rather than a problem with Bloomerang, however.

Cons

Bloomerang's reporting function could be easier to use, it requires a lot of clicks and the columns are small. However, I expect that over time as I become more familiar with Bloomerang, I won't think that this is a problem.

Pros

I can track everything about my donors and volunteers, including contact information, notes, giving and volunteer history, and all interactions from emails to personal meetings. But it doesn't require a lot of my time to enter this information, allowing me more time to actually do my job in raising money. It is very easy to then pull the information out in reports.

Cons

It isn't really made for event registration, and membership management could be improved. But it is easy to upload registration information from the ticket managing software we use.

It is a great database and donor management software and it offers the ability to keep all donor information in one place.

Pros

It is easy to use, all your donation information can be contained in one place. Allowing the user to make custom fields assures that you can personalize the information to fit your needs for information. Being able to add personal notes or interactions allows each staff member a place to record their own interactions with each donor.

Cons

The filtering can be somewhat complex and/or clunky and when adding a new contact it automatically adds them to every email lists you have created. It would be much better to let the organization choose which lists to add them to as you create a profile.

Bloomerang is ideal for agencies that are looking for a straightforward interface with the ability to customize fields and reports to your needs. Their social media integration, relationship tracking, and interaction fields takes our ability to get to know donors to another level. The import function, once you get the hang of it, is an incredible time saver. The ability to embed online donations via a custom Bloomerang form into our website has increased our online donations significantly. The program is continually improving and the customer service is excellent.

Pros

-User-friendly interface
-Pretty easy for beginners to pick up
-I love how you can make relationships between people (very nice to pull up a church and find out what volunteers and donors attend that church or go to that book club) and put people into households
-The giving summary on the donor profile and dashboard is a nice visual.
-I like the ability to create tasks (but it would be nice if they sent you email reminders for deadlines that are coming up)
-The ability to create interactions field is very helpful to keep track of your communications, meetings, and other cultivation items that don’t necessarily include a donation.
-Custom forms, including custom donation forms make it so easy to tailor fundraising campaigns.
-Very customizable reports and fields (we now use Bloomerang instead of paying for Volgistics to track volunteer hours)
-Using Bloomerang stripe with our online donation page is fantastic—Our online donations went WAY up from Paypal.
-Great responsive technical support---we use just the online chats and emails and haven’t found a need for phone support.
-Love that this database is always improving. Our last one did not have that capability, so I think Bloomerang has a lot of potential.
-Also love that it’s cloud based---our last database was not.
-You can link your Twitter feed to Bloom and it will automatically populate tweets that your constituents have tweeted, and it gets added to their engagement level.
-I’m using the import function for more and more things…donation entry, mailing interactions, attendance sheets, volunteer hour tracking. Once you get the hang of it, it can save a lot of time if done correctly.

Cons

-Report formatting: All reports export to excel, but it only exports the table and information. It would be nice if it at least included a title (so you remember what you’re looking at), and maybe a time and date it was run.
-Reporting: The new reporting function is very powerful and you can pull great information from it. I do have trouble with how Bloomerang collapses each query. With more complex reports it's hard for me to remember each part of my query when everything is collapsed into a small
-Multiple tributes/notificants (for holidays): You can only put in one tribute per donation right now.
-They need a much better way to input tributes and they also need a way to track and send acknowledgements to people: The honor/memorial function is currently the worst part of Bloomerang…it has a terrible, backwards work flow and a major oversight for nonprofits that process a lot of tribute gifts. Although you can add a “notificant” to a donation, there’s no way to actually send letters to notificants through the letter function. We’ve created a process to notify honorees and notificants manually that works great, but that’s something to keep in mind for folks that process a lot of honor/memorial gifts.
-Special note if you go through the conversion process: When you add a new constituent, there’s a field that Bloomerang populates a date called “Created”. However, when your data is transferred, your original Created dates (if it was tracked in your previous system) will be lost and they’ll all be put into Bloomerang as the date the data was transferred. Bloomerang needs to keep the integrity of the original "Created" date of constituents OR create a custom field to place that information so you can run future reports. [There is no way to use the import feature for us to go back and add this information in, so volunteers are adding it for us].
-Task list: I’d like the task list to show more details to help you know what the task is, and send email reminders. Right now you make a task and then forget about it.
-Letters need to export to word instead of a PDF. We have a pdf editing software here to get around that, but would like to keep our Family House fonts and make minor changes if needed, etc.
-Need a way to catch duplicate records (either with a report, or alert if you're entering an address that's already in the system)

Advice to Others

Take advantage of the conversion process to clean up your current database (are there any fields that you can combine, are there any data inconsistencies that you can fix). The only issue we had when we converted was when all entries into our "Date Constituent Added" field changed from the date we entered the constituent into our system to the date that we imported into Bloomerang. We had to go back through with a custom field and manually re-enter all "constituent add" dates. The customization ability is great, but as a user be careful to not get it too cluttered!

We love Bloomerang at my organization. We've been using them for a couple of years now, and it has not only streamlined our donor and gift processing capabilities but also our ability to track event attendance, send out emails, and so much more. The system requires some training and reports can be tricky to get a handle on, but the recent update has made them incredibly powerful. We would recommend this company without hesitation!

We have been very pleased with Bloomerang since its implementation a little over a year ago. We switched from Raiser's Edge, and made the right choice. The user experience with Bloomerang is far superior - it's attractive to look at, the functionality is simple and intuitive, and we can more easily pull reports. The aspect we appreciate the most is the ability to assign tasks among our team members and update prospect interactions. We were hoping that Bloomerang would integrate with Outlook to alert us when tasks were assigned and due, but until that happens we've built in a work-around: we set notifications on our Outlook calendars to remind us to check Bloomerang tasks ever other day. The ability to track as a team all of the interactions, follow-ups, and stewardship activities in real time helps us be more attentive and give better customer service to our donors. It's clear that Bloomerang was designed by fundraisers for fundraisers - it's a great database and fundraising tool.

We were apprehensive about change at first but the Bloomerang staff made the transition go smoothly. For almost a year now we have enjoyed the ease of entering and acknowledging donations, tracking and targeting donors and communicating with our constituents on a regular basis.

Online customer support was vital as we learned the program and worked through creating reports and newsletters. A Bloomerang representative was always available to answer all of our questions.

I have been very pleased with the product and have recommended it to several other Development professionals in my area. In 2014 we switched to Bloomerang for our donor database and it was a great decision. The software transition went smoothly and has been easy to use. Customer service is great and fast. I like the chat feature for simple questions. Someone is always ready to help.

The only complaint is the limitations on the letter templates.

What a backward way to think! I had always heard of Bloomerang thanks to their presence at conferences, webinars and experts. To move to a simpler system meant more people could use this tool. So what do I like best? Bloomerang became an effective tool so that more than one person could use the system. Increased functionality meant we could accept online donations and training people became a cinch.

The ability to use software online makes it easy to connect anywhere. The reporting feature has made it easy to report to management on our new campaign quickly and accurately. The other feature we are excited about is the email function. The emails look professional and the ability to track who opens the email or clicks links is great information.
