Value for Money

Never again!

Pros

Supposedly, it's the industry standard. It's powerful, it has been around forever. At first glance, has all the functionality one would need.

Cons

Terribly difficult to use. Frequent technical difficulties. Does not interface well with the related product, Financial Edge. Slow response time when entering Actions. Much duplicate entry required when entering Actions and Notes. Salutations offered when entering a new account are "wonky". Way too little bang for the buck. Reporting awful and difficult.

Value for Money

Overall, Raiser's Edge is a great product with a lot of functionality. It can be pricey, but my research shows me that for many major fundraising organizations, they all use it. Raiser's Edge is the industry standard. If your organization uses it, I would not migrate away from it. If your organization is not using, it might be a worthwhile investment for the functionality it provides.

Pros

Relatively easy to use. Great functionality as a constituent database and donor giving software. Definitely top of the line.

Cons

Multiple modules needed for credit card processing, events, education/alumni. Each module is additional cost. Conversioncost could be high if converting away from Raiser's Edge due to its complexity compared to other providers. Customer support can take a long time to get through via phone. Sales really pushes to move you RE-NXT, which is cloud-based and costs several thousand more than server-based RE.

Blackbaud does a great job updating their software and I believe that they will continue to flesh out their programs and deliver top-quality builds as time moves forward.

Pros

Raiser's Edge NXT is truly a next generation product in fundraising. The user interface is smooth and responsive, the organization of data is comprehensive, and the analytics are top notch. It does a fantastic job in keeping the users up to date and aware of what needs to be done.

Cons

If you don't keep up with data entry the system will quickly fall behind. It really needs to be done the way Blackbaud outlines it for the system to function properly. Not all features are fully built out, so you'll find yourself if database view regularly.

Pros

Being cloud based, RE NXT is great for on-the-go fundraisers. It is also a great UI and being able to drill into records is beneficial.

Cons

The filtering in lists is not as flexible as database view. There are queries that still need to be done in database because NXT doesn't provide enough filtering criteria. For instance, it is necessary for us to use "not one of" or "does not equal" in our filtering but NXT doesn't have that capability at this time. Also, it is concerning that when merging records in database view, data that was entered via NXT may not merge and will be lost if the record is deleted during the merge.

Pros

I love that you have a quick glance at the date within The Raiser's Edge without having to log into the database view and search all over for what you need.

Cons

You are not able to make a lot of changes to data when you are in RE NXT. You still have to log into the database view to make changes to the constituent record. This includes combining records when duplicates are found.

I would not recommend it for small organizations.

Pros

Raiser's Edge has wonderful reporting capabilities. It definitely personifies garbage in, garbage out though, so you want to be sure to set things up the correct way right from the beginning. Also if you want to be able to quantify your data you have to put in fields that you can do so - not something like notes.

Cons

It is not the easiest to learn and I don't feel like we ever used the full capability of the software. I wish there were more opportunities for general training's using it and learning how other companies are utilizing it.

If Blackbaud could speed up the connection to the Database View Raiser's Edge NXT would be great!

Pros

The Web View portion of the software is amazing! You can search for constituents much more easily than you could by what is now called the "Database View". The interactions are great even for mobile.

Cons

Compared to when we were hosted on-premises the data entry through the "Database View" is slow. We have also struggled with some server issues on their hosting. We traded more functionality for lower efficiency unfortunately.

Excited to see what NXT will do next!

Pros

NXT is very easy to use especially for those not super computer savvy, it's very user friendly, and I find the modules self explanatory.

Cons

NXT is not yet completely developed so you still need to rely on your database view for some things. Also some modules are laid out differently and use different terms so it takes some getting used to.

Powerful Database

Ease-of-use

Functionality

Value for Money

My recommendation is to get formal training if you are going to use the database and give each new staff member the opportunity to be trained by a Raiser's Edge specialist. The database is absolutely worth the time and money if you also invest in your staff's knowledge of it. If two people are doing the same task in even a slightly different way, you can end up with holes in your data. However, if you do get good training, you'll find this database to be well worth it and will assist your fundraising strategies quite well.

Pros

The Raiser's Edge is a very powerful database that can provide great insight into your organization's fundraising. It has the capability to track and report on anything you would ever need to look at for fundraising. The template reports are customizable, which is very helpful. My favorite feature is the query and export combo - I can pull out any piece of information I need to analyze and Raiser's Edge does a good job of getting rid of duplicate information for me. The dashboard feature is also good - you can create multiple dashboards to compare fiscal years, appeals, funds, recent gifts list, summaries, etc. You can also share your dashboard with other users so that everyone can be looking at the same thing.

Cons

Building custom reports from scratch (not using a template) can be challenging to create through Crystal Reports. However, you can usually find a template that you can customize to create a similar report, if not the exact report you want to write.

Duplicate records can also be challenging in Raiser's Edge. When Constituents are uploaded to the database from a list or entered manually, Raiser's Edge will not identify duplicates if the name or address is not an exact match. This can be frustrating - for example, it won't recognize a duplicate address if the only difference is between "Street" and "St." in the database. Cleaning up the duplicates is even more challenging. I have needed to export lists of constituents, identify duplicates in Excel, and then go back into Raiser's Edge to merge and delete the duplicate constituent records.

Support is always super willing to help you with a task. When I first started I used their chat and phone support frequently which was a huge help.

Pros

Can open on any mobile device through a normal web browser making it extremely easy to log in and add your actions. Great for a giving officer to be able to look up a constituents info on the go. Useful analytics on actions, fundraising reports, LYBUNT, etc.

Cons

You cannot add a record straight from NXT. Only can add new constituent records from the desktop version of Raiser's Edge. Their Wealth analytics are decent but I've found better resources from other groups like Wealth Engine or Donor Search.

Pros

RE NXT is very easy to navigate and colleagues who have little or no experience with the database view are able to find the information they need without a hassle. I like that NXT offers suggestions and specially prepared reports that provide useful information for reigniting lapsed donors and gauging capacity for future asks. I also love the visual analytics offered, as they help to segment and illustrate the entire scope of our constituent base rather than just looking at spreadsheets.

Cons

There are some limitations as to how much information can be added to lists in NXT, making it easier to generate more complex lists in the database view. I also think it would be beneficial to offer a complete guide of all of the training and webinars available as a benefit of NXT, as our team has not taken advantage of many useful resources because we have not been aware of them.

Value for Money

Overall the Raisers Edge platform has served our organization well for many years, but as we have been looking to modernize our donor management solution, we have found that Blackbaud's NXT platform has been very slow and bug-prone. We are evaluating other more modern solutions as well.

Pros

Very extensive options
Long-standing company so they are not a fly-by-night operation
Extensive training solutions (but necessary with level of complexity)

Cons

Clunky user interface
NXT platform is slow to migrate full functionality (still does not have gift entry)
More expensive than many other solutions now on the market

Ease of use is a huge benefit- primarily because I have used RE for more than 17 years. I have networked with other uses for quick troubleshooting and support.

Pros

Cloud-based - I like the mobility of having donor information available at any time and any where from my mobile devices. There are many other additional features that make RE unique - it is difficult to list them all.

Cons

Price-- it is still out of reach for smaller non-profits. RE is still considered the top software among development professionals. There are universal properties to databases - but the offerings and modules are more user friendly than other software options. Just wish that it was more feasible for others to purchase and pay for the maintenance.

Raiser's Edge has a great reputation for large organizations, making sure that they have every tool they need to track donors and donations. They are very adaptable and work hard to stay on top of customer needs.

Cons

Raiser's Edge is too big for our company and our department. I don't have time to track my one-time donor's allergies or favorite golf course. Also, because their program is such an in-depth solution, tracking the bare minimum requires a large amount of clicks and screens.

Learned more about database structure

Pros

The ability to customize to fit our organizations needs. The training was awesome too! Technical support was always available and always came up with an answer even if it was not the answer we wanted.

Cons

Data was hosted so we did not have direct access to our data. Reporting was very limited and you had to know crystal reports to spit any meaningful reports out. Canned reports did not suit our needs. RE NXT is a great system for tracking donor relations for nonprofits. RE has been the standard CRM for nonprofits for a while but their improved NXT edition is worth the extra expense. Wealth screening, enhanced features like donor mapping, and customized reporting are all improved features of NXT over the base RE 7 edition. It is an essential tool in building deeper relationships with donors and thus in raising more money to support your nonprofit.

I used Raiser's Edge for quite some time as the coordinator for a large cohort of members. It was a huge pain in the butt. The company ended up migrating away from RE simply because the software was incredibly clunky and looked like something out of the 90s, with functionality that wasn't that much better. Editing records was a pain, and conducting searches required a pretty thorough knowledge of Boolean terminology. Even then, it would sometimes take pretty esoteric knowledge to locate things properly. Batch processing took what seemed like a lifetime every time. Running reports was neither easy nor particularly useful, and the export formats were not typically the most useful (e.g. excel sheets).

I used this product for 2 years while working nonprofit and it is a very challenging program to use. The national organization only had 30 users and at times could not access due to other users. There were processes in place so as a user, I could not access. I could not print reports and had to be submitted 2 weeks prior to needing. I use Raiser's Edge as our donor database and the data entry, reporting features are really updated. However, when they came out with NXT, it was a game changer. NXT is amazing! It has a very attractive interface and super user friendly. As soon as you search for a record, consecutive years and all information on the donor is clear to see and it lets you know which donors you should be reaching out to. You could assign donors to others to initiate contact. You could easily access information on your mobile device. It takes the Raiser's Edge data entry interface and completely gives it a makeover. You are easily able to review giving history and all donor information on one page and very clearly. The only thing I don't like about NXT is that the consecutive years aren't always the same as in the donor records in the database version.

I've used Raisers Edge for years and it is still the industry standard for larger nonprofits that don't want to create their own software. The most important caveat is how much time a nonprofit spends on implementation.

Pros

It is built by fundraisers and they continue to improve it.

Cons

While it is excellent, if you put garbage data in or you don't take the time to implement correctly, it will not help you achieve your fundraising goals. It can be complicated and expensive.

Advice to Others

It is the industry standard, so you will find that most fundraisers have experience using it. This can be very helpful in hiring people who can hit the ground running.

It's about time! RE had been stagnant and the same for over a decade. Much more user-friendly. Huge improvement!

I used Raiser's Edge at a previous organization for our relationship management with our individual donors and partner organizations. Honestly, it did the job, however, it was usually quite painful to use because of its lack of intuitive interfaces.

When I was working for Make-A-Wish Georgia, we used Blackbaud as our fundraising support tool. It was an incredible tool that housed all our fundraising and development information, and continues to be top of the line in CRM use!

Pros

I loved how it housed all contact, fundraising, donor and development information all in one system. It is also very intuitive!

Cons

Because Blackbaud is so expansive, it is not an easy system to use. You have to become trained and use the system regularly to keep up.

Advice to Others

Blackbaud continues to impress me with the new software it releases!

Raiser's Edge is a very valuable tool that I've used at several different organizations on a daily basis. It is an excellent resource when used correctly and consistently. I just wish the search function was a little easier to navigate sometimes!

Pros

I like how easily I can find information stored by colleagues throughout my organization. It cuts down on asking people questions about constituents they have relationships with.

Cons

I find it hard to search for information sometimes if you do not have all the information you need.

I think the support team and the training videos are awesome. The product itself isn't as adaptable to non-profit needs as it should be. We used Financial Edge and were promised that it was fluid with the system and it is not.

This is an amazing software that achieves the lofty goal of putting information into the hands of the executive fundraiser. People familiar with the Blackbaud line of fundraising software understand that while it is the world class solution for higher ed and large non-profits, the price is a clunky and user unfriendly experience. RE7 just isn't fun but NXT takes a stab at changing that. Blackbaud's first major overhaul since Version 7, NXT brings fundraising to the mobile platform via SaaS in the way Apple's iOS does across all devices in a polished, easy to access and easy to read way. For 3 years running I had tried to expand the use of Raiser's Edge to our primary solicitors without success and only with NXT did the transition stick. We now have 14 volunteers working in the field using NXT on the fly and reporting that they are using information as well as entering information. As DBA I can see and control information choices by limiting open text fields. It reports seamless integration with their eTapestry although we have not gotten their yet. But their first cloud based product is definitely worth demoing. We have loved the switch. One downside is the price - it is all custom pricing although they will tell you it is based on database size. Pricey but on the balance worth it .
