Lightspeed Retail Software

Lightspeed Retail is a cloud-based point of sale (POS) solution that is suitable for retailers in industries such as apparel, footwear, bike, jewelry, pet, sporting goods and home decor. The solution enables retailers to manage inventory and customers, process transactions and dig deep into their store’s analytics.

Multi-store capability keeps inventory synced across all locations, while mobile extensions mean that associates can check on inventory and conduct sales from anywhere in the store via iPad. The solution enables users to create, track and assign serial numbers to products as well as create product variations such as size, color and material using a matrix system.

Various reports allow users to track sales and inventory numbers and see sales, profits and changes over time. The solution is able to combine purchasing, transferring and multiple vendors into one master order. Users can also process special orders, layaways and work orders.

Lightspeed Retail is available with a monthly subscription and offers free, personalized onboarding and 24/7 support.

Overall I think I have made a great choice for our business.

Pros

It has great documentation on how-to-do each part of the website. The customer support staff are very friendly and helpful to the customers. I have chosen to set up the site myself so it has taken a little longer than I previously thought it would. However the support staff has been so helpful. When I have things fully functional it will be an amazing site.

Ease-of-use

Value for Money

Pros

Has many great features and always adding new ones. Customer support is spotty but if you keep hanging up and calling again, you will usually get someone that can help you properly.

Cons

You cannot have or order any items that are not singles through the POS. Meaning if you order any items by the case, the system will not recognize the single case items for re-ordering. This results in a huge mismanagement of inventory and tons of problems ordering.

I have used this system for approximately 5 years and the team at LightSpeed have continually made improvements. I believe it is a super easy POS to use and the monthly rate makes sense as it is not residing on a single computer. I would recommend and have recommended this product to others.

Pros

Lightspeed is very user friendly. It is super easy to get your new employees trained on this POS. The system is easy to pick up. I also appreciate the ease of creating a purchase order in the system. I can't say enough about having cloud access with this POS system. I can work from anywhere! I use the reports and graphs a lot even though I work with an inventory management system. It seems to give me accurate information for future ordering

Cons

Inventory can be it's downfall. I have spoken with several different retailers and it is consistent about being inconsistent in running totals. I review it weekly just to make sure prior to ordering. I also don't like that the margin is incorrect! One must use a profit margin tool to make sure your markup is consistent with what it needs. Last thing that the system does not have is PO's by category or show inventory assets received in cost and retail. It only shows it in cost which can be cumbersome as our products have several different margins.

Pros

Lightspeed is a good solution for point of sale in a retail environment. It's also useful for customer database, keeping track of inventory, creating reports to track sales, etc.

Cons

There's needs to be more control allocating products so it does not show as available in inventory if set aside for impending use/sale.

Overall, Lightspeed has been a lifesaver compared the first POS system I was given to use for my bookstore. I would recommend them!

Pros

User-friendly, intuitive - very low learning curve, clean, easy to read screens, great reports functionality.

Cons

When emailing an order I wish that there were some kind of confirmation sent to my email or that the status would automatically change to from "open" to "ordered". Also, when I am searching through the special order list I would like for it not to automatically go back to the top of the list after every change I make. Sometime I need to make several changes in a row for a particular customer and I would like for my cursor to stay where it is after the change.

There purchasing orders need work. If your a store that deals many orders like a convenience, grocery, liquor store etc. This system is not for you. It's unable to track inventory correctly unless your receive the order immediately before it's out on your shelves. The inventory is unable to go negative which makes it a huge hassle to double check inventory constantly. Your restricted to only a couple credir card processors. There are a couple more cloud based systems on the market around the same price range that have been more stable over the years. I would stay away they may be going bankrupt since they all the customers will be switching after this year because of the performance issues of being down so often

Pros

They got a large staff to apologize for the constant outages that occur with there software

English speaking customer service
Sleek design
Mobile Friendly
Comprehensive Reporting

Cons

I've had the system for a little over a year now and it has had glitches at least 10 times to where it is unusable and you have to go cash only. Point of Sale systems cannot have that many issues in one year. It's unacceptable.

Pros

We bought Lightspeed Retail for our shop and bar in London in March. On the surface it all looked perfect for what we needed. Four months on and I'm still undecided as it's still not properly set up yet.

Cons

The biggest issue that I have come across so far (and everybody in my opinion should be aware of this before purchasing the wireless printer) is that you have to have the print receipt function on if you want the cash drawer to automatically open after each sale. If you have the 'print receipt' function switched to off then the iPad won't talk to the printer, which won't talk to the cash drawer.
When I asked the support, whether there was a way round this she told me if I don't want to print receipts then I have to open the drawer manually with the key. I just find this incredible! Not only is it a massive waste of paper to have the print feature on all the time, but its a massive security issue for me to have the keys dangling in the drawer all the time.
To me it appears that the star printers are out to make a tidy buck on the till rolls, because I cannot believe that there is not the technology to bypass the the print receipt feature and get the printer talking to the cash drawer without printing the receipt

Pros

The low up-front cost of Lightspeed's system was my initial draw, and I'm very happy with the results since. Customer service responds to the few minor problems that I have had, and sometimes our suggestions as to improvements of the software are actually implemented, making you feel as though Lightspeed is interested in providing a quality product.

Cons

While my salesperson was great, I've heard from others that they've experienced pushy or rude salespeople. That, however, is hearsay so I can't put too much weight in it. Every POS system has its problems, but I appreciate that Lightspeed actually seems interested in improving.

I have always found that support is extremely helpful and will even call back to follow up. When their is a Canada wide issue the wait times are longer but it is very unusual for me to wait any longer then 5 minutes.

Pros

The ease of updating information is extremely nice for our restaurant. When it is busy the kitchen does not get clogged up because our servers can print the orders before moving on to the next table.

Cons

We only have a couple of cons: first that the developer has yet to enable two colour printing on the kitchen bills. Second any power surge I need to update the IP address on both printers.

Excellent software for growing businesses.

Value for Money

Overall the software is amazing and the good outweighs the bad and a tested about 10 different PoS softwares when I was shopping around and none of them encompass everything I have mentioned so i know my expectations are very high....which is why I state again...if they added in these features it would make them industry leaders and really a phenomenal PoS system. (its 90% of the way there for me...just a few more features and if would be the best)

Pros

The integration with xero accounting has been a true time saver for my business. It transfers all sales data at the end of the day seamlessly so I don't have to. The ability to use the front end off site has been super helpful as well as it doesn't tie me down to the store and I can do a lot of my work on the go. Creating products, invoicing clients, setting up the main screen custom to what I want is extremely simple once you run through it once.

Cons

Theres a few simple features that are missing from the PoS software which I would like to see integrated and would make it hands down the best in the industry for small businesses.
1) Getting an integrated payment terminal that accepts chip, pay pass and swipe options would avoid any mistakes between manually punching in the amounts on the debit/credit machine and would avoid any back end work after the day closes to be able to balance the day
2) Allowing me to enter the details of the invoices (supplier name, invoice number, total amount being paid, gst, pst, etc.) that are being paid out on a daily basis and having that information transferred to xero would alleviate tons of paper work after the close of the day.
3) There is no way to pull out a month end statement for corporate clients that pay their account once a month. Checks have to be cross referenced manually with the bills that have been put on tab. You should be able to at the very least select which tab invoices are being paid from the list of invoices on the clients account. This would show which ones are outstanding at a glance rather than having to refer back to the paper invoices that the system creates.
4) A front facing screen to display pricing of items being charged, advertisements, and other information is something I have been asking for since day 1 (3 years now). And I would love to see this feature incorporated.
5) Having the ability to offer a discount for a bulk purchase is something that should be automatic. ie: if you buy 1 cookies its $0.99 but if you buy 6 cookies its $5.00. It should do this automatically after punching in 6 cookies...but it doesn't...I have to have another button for "6 cookies" ...small issue but still a bit annoying. Each item in the product section should just have an option to sell at a cheaper price by "x" quantity.

Their sales people will tell you the software does everything you need, but it will not. The amount of work it takes to enter products is beyond ridiculous. You have to enter the same info multiple times to get it to work right. Customer service is a joke. You wait forever & once you get them on the phone they don't even know how to work the software themselves. When your problem gets elevated to someone who is supposed to know about your issue they tell you to call customer service to get help. WTF!?!! If your website doesn't work the way they tell you it's supposed to they tell you to call a web designer. Are you kidding me!? So when you call the web designer they refer you to the designer says they don't have the knowledge to do anything with Lightspeed websites yet, but they will. What!?!? Is this the Twilight Zone!! They give you the ability to pay extra for 'Advanced Reporting'. Ha! It's just as much a joke as their basic reporting. None of it gives you correct info or the info you actually need. I could go on and on about all the issues I've had. Just trust and do not sign up with this company! Any of the reviews about LS being great are either fake or from a business owner who doesn't have to actually use the software. I can't imagine anyone loving it this software! It's terrible!

Pros

The only pro to this software is that you can check a customer out and that it does have a website.

Cons

Their sales people lie, customer service is terrible, reports are not accurate & they do not care about the customer!

Lightspeed Retail and eCommerce

Ease-of-use

Value for Money

Pros

Easily get products loaded into your retail platform and eCommerce all at once! Everything flows from one side to the other! I am able to load hundreds of products in the matter of a day. The eCommerce has everything you can think of for features and uses. They have more than enough options to fit anyone's needs for design options on the website. The retail software is immaculate! They have EVERYTHING covered!

Cons

Make sure you look at the recommended sizes for the pictures on the eCommerce. If you dont use the recommended size or resize your images to that size, the pictures will either blow up way too big to see the entire picture on the website menu or it will be too small for anyone to see. It is VERY picky. But we use Canva and we change the size of the pictures in the matter of seconds and everything is working perfectly. I can post hundreds of products in the matter of a day. There currently is a layaway feature on the retail software but it is not yet available on the eCommerce side yet. They said they are working on it but its not there yet so I cannot say if it is good or not.

Pros

I like that the software is very easy to use and just works. One thing I really like about it is that when I'm putting in new inventory, it will search their database to see if the item has been inputted by someone else so that I don't have to put in all of the information. It's really neat. It will also search local inventory to make sure it hasn't already been put in so you don't have duplicates. One other thing I like about lightspeed retail is making sales. It's just really easy to use, especially when you have a scanner. We use an iMac as our till and it just works really nicely.

Cons

The only problem I've had is when putting in new inventory, if it can't find it in their database or local inventory, it sometimes just displays an error asking you to try again instead of saying it couldn't find it. Which can be frustrating if you try multiple times.

Continued evolution and new features being added. Customer service can be good if you hang up on the new people and keep calling until you get someone that is knowledgeable.

Cons

Missing a core element of a POS that they refuse to fix while they continue to add new features. They need to focus on the core. Any retail environment that orders products by the case for any reason will be fed up with this system. The case item when broken down into singles do not communicate with each other for re-ordering. So if you set a level of singles say at 6 you would like the system to trigger an order of 1 case, it will not work. Huge inventory and ordering issues because of this. D- rating with BBB and not even accredited.

The ecommerce platform is a total joke and is in need of a massive UX overhaul. On top of being a pain to use, it has very few options for themes and plugins, which is a quick way to end up with a website that looks terrible and out of date. There is little to no documentation on most subjects, and what does exist is vague and not very helpful. The store search functionality is full of holes, you will regularly have trouble finding items via search, on top of being an absolute mess. There are many other problems, but the real big one is horribly slow support turnaround, which at times is not even remotely helpful.

We started using the software at a time when very few people were using apps to take restaurant orders. It was revolutionary for our market and soon many followed the trend.

Pros

It was a revolutionary tool for us in South Africa when we first started using the system in our restaurant in 2013. It eliminated errors in orders by the waitrons as orders were taken immediately at the table as opposed to the waitron memorising the order and punching it into the system. It also assisted in getting dishes to the patrons much faster as orders went directly to the kitchen with little delay. The stock functionality was also very useful to us.

Cons

Based in South Africa and the exchange rate being extremely volatile at the time, the monthly premium was sometimes quite expensive.

Cons

I can't really think of anything negative about this software but I do think it's not that easy to setup custom menus, but it's not that important cause it's something you rarely configure. What I would like it's that it let's you setup your own document number sequence and also more languages and better templates for documents. They are missing out on a big international market because of this, there are countries that have some regulations on the receipt number and also they need to add some specific things to their documents, required by their government.

Nice user interface. Good features for a shop that does service work. Cloud-based software makes it easy and convenient.

Cons

Our bike shop has been using Lightspeed for 5 years now, first with their Mac based software, and then with their cloud based software (Lightspeed Retail). There are many great things about the software, but on the whole I would not recommend a small business owner to hitch their cart to this company. There are significant bugs, inventory control is a disaster, but worst of all, fundamentally Lightspeed does not care about their customers. What Lightspeed cares about is their roadmap which in most cases doesn't deal with fundemental issues that their customers have been bringing up for years - if you have any doubt on this, look at their "ideas" page where top voted on features and requests have sat dormant for years.

My frustration has boiled over due to an issue with the way their inventory system works, and the way their customer service team has responded to my pleading that they at least give me an ETA on a fix. Here's the backstory: Lightspeed does a very peculiar thing which is that it will auto-add inventory if a product is sold but does not exist in inventory. Not only this, but Lightspeed will auto-check-in inventory off of POs if a product is sold. Now this in and of itself is a disaster as far as accountability is concerned: how is one supposed to track POs when product mysteriously gets checked in! But the worst part is that there is a bug in their system which will auto-check-in product off of POs if product is put into a work order. Doesn't matter if said product is sold or not, it will check-in the product regardless, causing a nightmare scenario where we are trying to figure out what POs have truly been received, and which POs Lightspeed has decided to receive automatically.

I brought this issue up for the first time around 6 months ago, and never got any solid response on a fix. I contacted support in April again. After a lot of back and forth about whether this was a real problem (like I love spending time contacting support) the support tech Derrick agreed that this was an issue. I asked for an ETA. No ETA was available.

I followed up a month later in May. Still no ETA, but Derrick assured me this was a priority, but also assured my significant problem that is causing myself and my staff time and frustration and vigilance and additional systems and workflows to remedy is "an extreme edge case scenario so I'm curious about how it could be causing you significant workflow issues."

So now we are in July. This supposedly "high priority" "extreme edge case" bug is still not fixed. No ETA. No communication. Since we started experiencing this issue Lightspeed has stuck an e-commerce link in the middle of the navigation bar and continued to work on integrating their e-commerece into every other cranny of the software, even if you don't use their e-commerce. They've added a new feature called Analytics which costs additional monthly fees. Their API is still slow and unsupported. Their App marketplace is effectively a Potemkin village of fake apps with no real syncing with the silo that is Lightspeed.

The promises of a cloud based POS are so great, but Lightspeed does not deliver. If you are looking to invest time and energy in a retail POS platform, I would strongly encourage you to look elsewhere. Lightspeed looks very slick on the surface, and it is quite good in many ways, but the underlying company culture does not put their customers first.

It helps my inventory online and instore remain perfect since the retail side talks to the ecom side and vice versa! It is AWESOME! Probably the #1 Feature I was looking for!

Pros

My absolute favorte thing Lightspeed Omnichannel does for our company is it keeps all our inventory correct online and inside our retail store! When we have online sales, all that data is brought into the Retail Side of the software and a new customer account is created. Even when a local, regular repeat customer makes a purchase online, the software is smart enough to match it up to the existing Lightspeed Account and just adds their sale to the list of sales they already had! Now, that is cool!

Cons

I know they are working on getting more eCom Support Technicians, so that is my only thing. Sometimes I have to wait on hold, but they have an accurate call back system too that is awesome! They call me back so I can move on with my day instead of being on hold! I've tested it many times, and each time they called me back and helped me out!

Reports is fairly easy, and it makes overall inventory management easy to use when it's done right. Transactions are smooth and, again, easy to complete.

Pros

I like that the software looks nice and it's very user friendly. Updates are made often to keep things getting better.

Cons

Sometimes there are features that are fairly industry-specific and can't be customized to work more efficiently for a specific industry.

Pros

IOS software, wanted to switch to iPads and mini iPads and also the idea of the cloud was interesting .

Cons

20 years in business with multiple locations and decided to try lightspeed at one of my restaurants because i consider myself an apple guy.
Worst decision i ever made, for the most part i got the worst dealer ever, where they don't know what they are selling, most of the issues i have had to resolve myself by calling the company direct, and that sometimes is a challenge as well. A year and half later and the system is still not doing what my old system used to do, not able to print certain reports, most nights can't close out the credit cards( most times i pray that i will be able to do it ).
if you own a restaurant this is not a system for you!!!!! simple retail I'm sure its fine, but busy restaurant its just to able to handle all the customization needed.
RESTAURANTS PLEASE DO NOT USE LIGHTSPEED, YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU DO.

Pros

Ease of use. Customer service. Online help plus video training. Astounding quantity of catalogs available.

Omnichannel is the way to go. With one inventory for web and store sales, the need to manually adjust it is now gone! Less mistakes. Customer info, ordering, stock, fidelity and gift cards managed in the same interface is a time great saver. Ad the fact that you can access it from anywhere and you have a winning combo!

Cons

French customer service (my native language) while always available, has a response time quite a bit longer than the English counterpart.
Reporting needs improvement.

Lightspeed suffers from frequent changes in the product. For our store, with over 2000 items and integration with a web store, it is a very big investment in time and money to change systems.

Since we've been on lightspeed, they have developed and cancelled three different e-commerce products: OnSite w/ E-commerce, WebStore, WebStore 2 (rewritten and incompatible). All of these have now been cancelled and we are left with a month to scramble to come up with a replacement. They are trying to coerce us to switch to their latest platform.

No thanks, we've learned our lesson.

One of the *most* important requirements for business software is that it is dependable. Lightspeed treats their products as short-term relationships that can be simply discarded for the next new shiny thing. The real business software would provide an upgrade path and help customers through it. Not lightspeed.

Find a company that can provide a stable platform. Lightspeed can not, it's not in their DNA.

Pros

Decent features, though e-commerce is really weak, as is inventory management (you have to export to excel, do counts, and re-import. None of our staff can figure this out--it is complex and error prone).

Cons

Horrible continuity of product.
Multiple software products are thrown away with customers left hanging with no transition plan.

Advice to Others

Stay away. We deeply regret placing our trust in Lightspeed.

We have been one of the first customers of Lightspeed in Europe. We have decided to rollout Lightspeed as they were on MAC and had a Magento connector for which we could connect our website. Their solution has never been consistent in synchronizing both retail and online stocks. The yearly process of global inventory has been a mess with hours of pain to get it done. Suddenly, 6 months ago, out of the blue, we got a noticed by Lightspeed that Magento is no longer supported and they only support their proprietary webcommerce solution. We have invested massively on developments around this architecture believing that Lightspeed was a serious POS solution and company. Finally, they have pointed out to Accumula, a integrator and solution provider which we now need to pay to have access to their API. We might have found a solution (not yet proven) but we deplore the communication they do with their customers

Lightspeed's products have one strong point: A broad set of features. Lightspeed has made sure to buy software with a lot of capabilities to resell. Unfortunately, this means that they don't seem to actually know how their software works. In the three years I've been using their software it's been the most unreliable and unstable piece of software I've ever used. Their desktop program still crashes on a daily basis and many functionality problems have not been fixed. The current version of our website has been running for about a year with major functionality problems that, to my knowledge, Lightspeed hasn't even looked into. The new version (eCommerce) which we're being forced to upgrade to, isn't actually finished or feature complete. They claim to support payment processors that they don't support, and of the few that are supported some of them aren't even functional in Canada, the country where Lightspeed is located. They clearly don't take customer service or their clients' business seriously. With the amount of problems we've had and the amount of money we've spent, I would expect some sort of account manager to contact us and make sure everything is working smoothly in order to retain us as a customer, but that just doesn't seem to be a priority.

Pros

Plenty of features.

Easy to learn.

Cons

Incredibly unstable and unreliable.

Poor customer service.

Very expensive.

Lack of updates or further development.

Largely exclusive to Apple products.

Advice to Others

Make sure to explore all your options before making a decision if you're considering Lightspeed as your POS system.

Pros: Easy to use. High responsiveness. SEO is very important and this software addresses this aspect of the website and looks to raise the standings of the companies who use it.

Cons: The reporting in the basic edition is a tad too basic. Product pictures are too small.

Have used Lightspeed for over 8 years. It is expensive and it is very difficult to sync with Quickbooks accounting software... causes many headaches. Customer service is terrible and the service contracts are very expensive for small business owners. I would not recommend this product. They have made very little improvements in the 8 yrs I have been using this product. It is a huge time suck.

Pros

works with Mac ... but in hindsight I would have set up a PC POS.

Cons

expensive, doesn't sync well with leading accounting software, not compatible with Quickbooks online, poor customer service, does not track sales by hour, can't find problems with Unbalanced GL Accounts, difficult to analyze sales. managing a large inventory is difficult with this POS.

Advice to Others

Use Quickbooks.
