Square for Retail Software


 

Square for Retail is a cloud-based point of sale (POS) and retail solution for all retailers. Key features include inventory management, customer relationship management, reporting and employee management. The solution comes with built-in payment processing and integration with all Square hardware.

Square for Retail enables users to track, adjust or transfer inventory across all locations. The solution can give automatic alerts for low stock, so users know when to create and send purchase orders to vendors. Items can be searched by keyword or by scanning barcodes.

Square for Retail can automatically create customer profiles with every card transaction and track customer information and purchase history. It can also automatically sort customers into loyal, casual, lapsed or custom groups. Users can then add notes and preferences to customers’ profiles.

Square for Retail is available for purchase on a monthly subscription basis.

Great item for events where there are no "land-lines" or you are away from the office. Can not wait to get another one for my personal use for events.

Pros

Easy to use, easy to take anywhere, fast payments and low fees! Great to make increased sales and impulse sales if some one does not carry cash.

Cons

Had to swipe a couple times on "well loved" cards. But did work. Need to make sure you have it plugged in all the way,.

Great for those that don't want the hassle of contracts, bulky equipment, and variable rates. Especially handy for smaller business that really don't do too much CC sales but want to give the client the option.

Cons

The rates are high as compared to volume based credit card merchants. Can be limited in what industries the UI and options are designed around.

Called Square to enable blind-drops in order to monitor cash in and out of my till. The representative had absolutely no answers to solve my problem, making my work harder than options enabled by Breadcrumb, Toast or Adelo.

Pros

It is a very friendly user interface for basic cashiers, likely nominal for coffee shops or small clothing stores and the like. They seemed to focus on its ease of use.

Cons

Overall lack of options. Slow, clunky, and allows theft easily for businesses in nightlife. Certain steps make the work absolutely tedious. The program seems to be somewhat unresponsive compared to pro models of newer POS systems from other companies. This was good for 2008, not 2018.

I have used Square as my primary point of sale to accept payments for some time now and it continues to be the only point of sale I use to accept credit cards.

Pros

Square is more than a point of sale. Square allows you to not only collect payment via a credit card, but also lets you do it in more ways than one. Use the card swipe device or enter the card manually. You can invoice your customers and pre-configure to have a list of items to pull into the invoice without having to manually entire complete descriptions. Square also lets you create categories, modifiers and discounts to your list of items. Keep all your customers at your fingertips with a list you can manage. And keep track of it all with sales and deposit reports.

Cons

There are no cons I can speak of, as Square has been able to process just about any credit card, and debit card. Unfortunately debit cards will be processed as a credit card, so if your customer would like to use it, they will not be able to treat the transaction as a debit transaction. Other than that, there are no real cons I can think of.

The system is solid and user friendly, but don't expect any help from the support staff.

Pros

Square is very easy to use and set up. All toggles are user friendly and easy to find. The site is easy to navigate and has an intuitive feel. More capability than meets the eye.

Cons

Customer support is the worst. Not that support issues are not solved, but I have never received any contact from a support member. I even reached out to the sales team recommending square for a restaurant. The sales team never responded to my inquiries.

Don't have an pros as we weren't able to use it due to reasons stated below. I would not recommend this to a start up business (or any other for that matter!)

Cons

Unlike competitors such as Paypal etc, Square does nothing to support start up businesses. After taking our first transaction it was frozen because we couldn't supply multiple bank statements (as we were a new business & therefore bank account). We were rudely told there was nothing we could do and would have to refund the payment putting ourselves in a very difficult position when we need to pay suppliers.

The fully-integrated POS has a lower processing fee, and is the best of what square has to offer. We have not had an interruption in service since we switched. There is no charge for the software, which is nice for small businesses, and it has an amazing ease of user interface.

Cons

I wish that Square had more integrations with other softwares needed by a retail establishment. For instance, inventory management softwares that will integrate with square are limited and polarizing with offerings. We had no choice but to go with Shopventory due to budget restraints.

Pros

I can take payments for any thing, any where! I used to hate it when someone would say "I don't have any cash on me." Square has definetely made things easier for small business owners. No monthly fee and no statement fees which kind of make up for the cost of transactions.

Cons

The cost. 2.75% for swiped transactions, 3.5% plus for keyed transactions, and 2.9% plus for online transactions.

Pros

Square offers my business a truly remarkable solution for mobile payment capture and quick processing times. I have used Square for over 5 years and have come to trust them with my processing needs. The rates are fair and the processing efficient. The chip reader is easy to use and people feel secure when they know we use Square.

Cons

Customer Service is hard to reach when you need it most. I wish it were easier to talk to support and get issues handled Live on the phone. But rarely are there issues so not a huge problem but could be.

No Customer Support When Needed!

Stick to the old-fashioned methods of accepting payments. Cash and Check.

Pros

It plugged right into my IPAD device and appeared simple enough to use. The initial test run on my credit card for the cost worked fine. Apparently, there was "not" an operator issue.

Cons

No seller support on weekends at all. Device prompted me for CASH sale only. It would not allow me to click on "credit card". Why do I need a Square for "cash" sales (I have a receipt book.)?? The device prompts read, "No signature required for sales ." Being a first time user, my guess was the sales were going through as a "debit" transaction and this is why "cash" was the only available option it allowed me to click. Again, I desperately tried to reach seller support while the customer was standing in front of me. How embarrassing! I will NEVER be in that predicament again. That was a Saturday. I had to wait until Monday morning to call them. Second, they record your phone call, but they immediately disconnect the call when you inform them that you also are recording the call. (I am in a one-party consent state; it was a courtesy for me to tell them they were being recorded as well. Wait, they think it is okay to record me, but they have a problem with also being recorded?? That is not reputable and they have something to hide!) They were unwilling to customers on my lost sales that day. I guess I gave away a bunch of FREE books. Lesson learned. I will NEVER use this device ever again. I will be sticking to old-fashioned methods of cash, check, or PayPal. P.S. Looks like they charged me a fee to log those CASH sales. I will be suing in small claims court for that few cents to recoup it because it is the principle of the matter. I lost sales, gave away free merchandise, plus they charged me for it. Um, NO! Do yourself a favor and do not get screwed by this company. I was supposed to get the 1st 100 transactions free. They lied about that as well. I do not recommend this product at all.

I LOVE square. I used this with my small business and it made selling items in public when someone didn't have cash super easy. I loved being able to swipe someone's card because it was more efficient for both parties.

Cons

The waiting times for new products are outrageous. I got my simple swipe tool for the headphone jack within a few weeks, but I've been on the chip reader waiting list for probably over a year.

It's such an easy and simple way to take credit card payment from customers at events or places we sell our retail and don't have a cash register. It's also widely used so customers are used to it and are willing to pay through it.

Cons

It can sometimes be finicky reading the card stripes and customers can get frustrated from that. However you can enter the card numbers by hand even though it takes longer.

I highly recommend Square POS for any business struggling to manage the point of sale transaction. Especially new businesses, can get tied up and make mistakes when it comes down to taking money from guests, and this is often a real sticking point when things go awry. This is where Square excels most. Transactions are seamless and intuitive, and guests are happy.

Cons

The main con is that Square's transaction fees are very high compared to a traditional merchant processing company. You just have to remember that you are paying for convenience and ease-of-use. One trick is to contact square (after having a few months of transaction data) and ask them to lower your rate.

My company used to use another POS/register system by another big name brand, and I was so let down by how little functionality there was. After switching to Square, there's no comparison. Square Register makes completing transactions a breeze for my employees at the register and our customers. It works well with the bluetooth connected card readers, and works intuitively to make transactions faster. Reporting/tracking is simple and running customized reports is easy to do by location/device/date/etc. Highly recommend!

I've had numerous companies approach me as far as their rates to use them. Square so far has been the best. No one compares, for my small business. There are a few things here and there that I wish would be different, but when I compare what I get for what I pay, I'm very satisfied.

Pros

Invoicing, easy payments, custom register menu.

Cons

It is automatic when two discounts apply, the % will be taken before the $ amount discount. When we offer 10% off to military and they earn a $ discount, it isn't calculated properly for us. So we have to make a few tweaks in order for it to work out. Called customer service and there is no way to change this.
Also, the "Guest" feature was accidentally turned on when I was exploring adding payroll/employees to Square. Once it's activated, it can't be removed. So we now have to hit Guest each time instead of it automatically opening up the Square Register.

Advice to Others

Definitely research your options. For me, Square is the most affordable and lowest cost for what you get. Overall, very happy with it.

I enjoy using Square, especially the function that allows you to still use cards if wifi is down. The one thing that was difficult was actually sliding the card through the square reader... if it wasn't exactly perfect, the payment won't go through.

Great product. Easy to set up and use. Gave only 4 stars because a lot of the work for setup is dependent on user. Some of the designs could be better if there was a stock library for icons, services, etc.

Categories would also be helpful. Some of finding your way around the site is a little challenging.

Customer service is hard to reach. They do not respond to emails. To get them by phone you have to submit a support request, and it's timely for response.

We used square register for a drive-through coffee stand. It is intuitive and quick. Two great features for a drive through. It's record keeping and inventory abilities were lacking. Specifically, I wish there was a good way to utilize discounts or coupons but track them. They would easily apply but there wasn't a way to report on how many or which were applied.

Cons

Card readers were inconsistent at best and it lacked a good reporting system.

I've been using the register in two of my locations. Easy to use, but has some issues regarding lagging printing
