Square for Retail Software


 

Square for Retail is a cloud-based point of sale (POS) and retail solution for all retailers. Key features include inventory management, customer relationship management, reporting and employee management. The solution comes with built-in payment processing and integration with all Square hardware.

Square for Retail enables users to track, adjust or transfer inventory across all locations. The solution can give automatic alerts for low stock, so users know when to create and send purchase orders to vendors. Items can be searched by keyword or by scanning barcodes.

Square for Retail can automatically create customer profiles with every card transaction and track customer information and purchase history. It can also automatically sort customers into loyal, casual, lapsed or custom groups. Users can then add notes and preferences to customers’ profiles.

Square for Retail is available for purchase on a monthly subscription basis.

We couldn't run our business nearly as well without it!

Pros

We run a very small business from our home, and customers are always impressed that I can take cards, even chip cards for payment. As a result, people tend to spend more money in our store. The cost is very low, and the convenience is priceless. They also provide free swipe devices.

Cons

I would rather run transactions while being connected to wi-fi or cellular, and we live out in the country, where the signal isn't that good, and I have to stand by the window to get the connection. More of my problem than Square's, though.

I think with some work and provements this would be a great app, however as it sets I'm not super impressed.

Pros

When I 1st started using square I was really excited to be able to go to craft shows and functions and build a take payments. It's nice to have a small log in to my phone and serve the thought of a big cash register of the past.

Cons

I found a this software to be clinchy, it was slow in my online retail shop and not easy to integrate with other software.

Pros

I like square point of sale, because it allows me to attend trade shows and accept payment on the go. I do not need to tote my entire cash register with me, as square has an app and I just need to attach the card scanner to my phone.

Cons

Like most card receivers and programs, there is a fee that is associated with using the POS. Not that that is a negative, but I do find it a little higher than the other point of sale applications.

We got this to use at a book launch last year and for other book sales. The concept is great. It's small, convenient and easy to use.

Cons

We had a lot of connectivity issues with swiping it so had to manually input all the credit cards because the swipe seems to have issues. We just received a new one so hoping that it will work better.

The equipment isQuick and easy to use. Customers only jave to dip tap or swipe and in little to no time their teansaction is over.

Cons

The High retailer fees. Also, the cash register is too touch sensitive and does not prompt the cashier to ensure that the appropriate transaction is charged. By accident the cashier can tap cash and that transaction goes through without either party realizing the mistake.

Wow -- we went from an expensive merchant credit account with expensive fees above and beyond transaction fees. The device/software was very inexpensive to move to. Moving to Square reduced costs significantly and transaction fees were well in line with the "discount" rates we were getting before -- without all the other fees. Because we're not handling credit card data in house, it also reduced our needs for managing compliance. It's easy to mobilize staff, the interface is simple, and the account can also be pulled up on a computer other device with a browser.

Cons

We had to purchase a new Square reader device when credit card technology evolved to chip, but I don't know that Square could have really done anything about building a device to handle the physical aspect of the technology change at the time they created the initial hardware. It wasn't a significant cost to upgrade the obsolete device to a chip version. It had no impact on the application.

We used square during a vendor fair for selling art work. It was easy to use and very quick and easy to set up. Being able to use your phone to make the transactions is very convienent. And you are able to keep track of your sales. As a customer I do like that square has my information stored so I automatically get receipts emailed to me when I purchase something from someone that is using square. I believe the fees are set so it’s always the same amount that is subtracted from each transaction.

Cons

That set amount can be a little higher than other merchant services but isn’t terrible. I don’t really have any other complaints with this software.

This system is very easy to use and has helped to develop my small ebay business that I had started on the side.

Cons

The system has not shown any signs of being unable to support the growing business, but I fear I will need to explore other options in the long run, if growth continues.

We have always had customers sent us the payments but sometimes the customers would leave and the payments will never come in. For that reason we decided to get the card swipe from Square and try it out.

Cons

The only thing I do not like expressively is the high percentage they charge as the merchant, but the system itself is great!

Do not have to have a merchant account, can be used as needed, no contract, no monthly fees, no limits for charges

Cons

Very high percent on all credit cards processed, they take out their fees before making deposits, which makes it harder to match up deposits to invoices and sales.

I would definitely recommend this for small businesses.

Pros

Easy to navigate. It has all the basics that a business needs. It helps know how the business is doing day to day by checking sales and inventory tracking which gives results in real-time . Being able to accept debit and credit card payments is a must these days with a lot of people opting to use cards to pay so it's quite useful for businesses that are on-the-go using the free mobile Square reader that easily plugs into a mobile phone's headphone jack.

Cons

Money goes straight to my bank account and may take a day or two for it to be reflected though. But this can still be a Pro though depending on your point of view.

My company used to use another POS/register system by another big name brand, and I was so let down by how little functionality there was. After switching to Square, there's no comparison. Square Register makes completing transactions a breeze for my employees at the register and our customers. It works well with the bluetooth connected card readers, and works intuitively to make transactions faster. Reporting/tracking is simple and running customized reports is easy to do by location/device/date/etc. Highly recommend!

I've had numerous companies approach me as far as their rates to use them. Square so far has been the best. No one compares, for my small business. There are a few things here and there that I wish would be different, but when I compare what I get for what I pay, I'm very satisfied.

Pros

Invoicing, easy payments, custom register menu.

Cons

It is automatic when two discounts apply, the % will be taken before the $ amount discount. When we offer 10% off to military and they earn a $ discount, it isn't calculated properly for us. So we have to make a few tweaks in order for it to work out. Called customer service and there is no way to change this.
Also, the "Guest" feature was accidentally turned on when I was exploring adding payroll/employees to Square. Once it's activated, it can't be removed. So we now have to hit Guest each time instead of it automatically opening up the Square Register.

Advice to Others

Definitely research your options. For me, Square is the most affordable and lowest cost for what you get. Overall, very happy with it.

I enjoy using Square, especially the function that allows you to still use cards if wifi is down. The one thing that was difficult was actually sliding the card through the square reader... if it wasn't exactly perfect, the payment won't go through.

Great product. Easy to set up and use. Gave only 4 stars because a lot of the work for setup is dependent on user. Some of the designs could be better if there was a stock library for icons, services, etc.

Categories would also be helpful. Some of finding your way around the site is a little challenging.

Customer service is hard to reach. They do not respond to emails. To get them by phone you have to submit a support request, and it's timely for response.

We used square register for a drive-through coffee stand. It is intuitive and quick. Two great features for a drive through. It's record keeping and inventory abilities were lacking. Specifically, I wish there was a good way to utilize discounts or coupons but track them. They would easily apply but there wasn't a way to report on how many or which were applied.

Cons

Card readers were inconsistent at best and it lacked a good reporting system.

We started with the Aloha processing system and it was so hard to use. Changing things on the screen was so difficult. We switched to Square and it's been so easy every sense. The customer service is probably the best part they are so helpful

I just love square. You can us it anywhere you your business may travel to. The charges are not expensive, Very reasonable. They are very good at letting you know cut off times for the holidays. And are very good at putting it in your account earlier around holidays. I love it it allows my company to accept ALL credit cards.
