drchrono EHR Software

drchrono EHR is a patient care platform that offers customization at the point of care and on the go. In addition to EHR, drchrono also includes scheduling, billing and patient reminders. It is available on iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch.

Healthcare providers can utilize only the applications, technology and back-office functions they need. This platform automates patient check-ins, documentation, e-Prescribing, medical billing and more.

The patient personal health record app (PHR) and patient check-in apps guide patients through registration; at their next visit they simply confirm their information with a tap.

M*Modal lets providers tap, speak and document patient visits on the software's built-in forms, all of which can be customized.

FreeDraw is an available app that lets providers and office staff notate diagrams, X-rays or other files; they can also use the iPad's built-in cameras to take pictures and embed them in the patient's record.

Prescriptions can be sent electronically via iPhone, iPad, and the Internet; software can offers e-fax capabilities.

The scheduling, eligibility, and billing features are easy to use. Price is very reasonable for features offered. Implementation specialists and staff handling EDI enrollments are very helpful, general support leaves much to be desired. It is a good value for an EHR that offers MU certification and electronic billing and payments.

The software does some funny things. It seems to be working ok, and then strange glitches in the system occur. There are certain processes that require double work such as: problems listed in the clinical note do not auto populate into the patient's problem list. The chart and clinical notes should communicate with each other. The general support staff will rush you through a call if you need help, which makes me feel as if they are not concerned with resolving my issue. This should definitely be fixed, as good daily support is very important.

Recommendations

If you are pretty tech savvy this system will be fine for you, as most things our staff have figured out on our own, through customization and reworking our daily processes to work around the few shortcomings in the system. If you are not very tech savvy, I would not recommend this EHR system.

I was initially attracted to the software for its advertised ability to be customized so much. I'm a fan of ipads and apple products, and was impressed that DrChrono was based around that. It really appeared we could do all of the things we wanted to with it, and it looked like we'd save some production time and save some money as a result of using the software. I liked the integration of billing and notes.

Likes Least

The software really has alot of potential. However, it did not seem right for a chiropractic office, unless I essentially customized it from the bottom up. I felt like I was rewriting the software. We felt the training was ok, but impatient trainers.

There were several features that we could not use unless we upgraded to a more expensive version, and I felt that my version was expensive enough.

Recommendations

Look at the ratings from others in your particular profession. We ended up cancelling our use of this software and had to switch to a different one. Don't make a decision until you are sure because switching software a second time was very costly and time consuming.

It's easy to schedule patients, Bill out services and monitor patient flow. The live claims feed is my favorite feature because it's easy to monitor your collections.

It was very different from other software I had used in the past, so it took me a little bit longer to figure out the note taking section. I also don't like not being able to call software help directly.

Recommendations

Look at different price points and see what's the best fit for your office. Being that I am a specialty office (chiropractic) I don't use a lot of the features drchrono offers.

When we started using all of the services that drchrono offers I was very satisfied with how smoothly the transition actually was. I thought it would take countless hours of training with several attempts and failures before we would be up and running. That was not the case. We were up and running from day one with very little effort.

Likes Least

We have only been using this product for about 5 months so there are still some things that we are getting accustomed to. Since we are on eastern standard time when we have needed to contact a particular representative sometimes it takes several hours before they get back to us. This is only because of the time difference. I do not like the format of the statements. They need more information. It would be nice if co-pays, co-insurance, and deductible amounts were indicated. When you create an appointment for a patient it would be great if the facility the patient has been assigned would show on that screen as we see patients at various facilities. We fixed this problem by creating flags.

Recommendations

Keep a log of all you concerns and questions and the responses you receive from customer service. Make a list of all the features that you would need to use in your office. Use the demos and videos before signing on to get familiar with the system.

We are a non profit that also has a Low Vision Occupational Therapy and Optometry practice. It was already difficult to find a software that was able to work for both my disciplines but I found it nearly impossible to find a EHR that was able to accommodate my non profit requirements of gathering number of people in the household, yearly income, veteran status etc.

I found this in Dr Chrono! They are truly a software company that writes EHR software. It is the best of both worlds. So far during my implementation process they have been able to find ways to make it work for me.

I would definitely suggest looking at Dr Chrono if you have any special requirements for reporting or areas of your practice that might cross unusual boarders in healthcare like my OT/OD practice.

Likes Least

Right now we really like the implementation process. I am struggling on the fact that we have more than one type of practitioner.

Recommendations

Be very specific when it comes to the requirements your practice has for reporting. During my search for an EHR I had one failed attempt. The reason for my failure came from my not asking the right questions regarding our needs for documentation. Lets just say from the OT perspective we have to work on goals but what my failed EHR didn't tell me is that what they consider goals were actually SNOMED goals...not the same thing!

Patient statements don't provide the patient with enough detail regarding their bill which can prevent calls to the office. For example, it should show the balance is due to their insurance deductible, co-pay, co-insurance, referral required, etc. Basically, whatever is returned from the payer as to why the claim was denied and therefore is the patient's responsibility.

Recommendations

1. Use software in the cloud. 2. Make sure it works with your browser(s) of choice. 3. Make sure it responds quickly. 4. Make sure you have good support. 5. Make sure the help system is good.

Easy to set up and customize the screens. The codes are already entered into the database. Forms are easy to customize. Easy to load documents, pictures, and exam notes.

Likes Least

It doesn't have the clock-in function for the employees, or the ability to print spectacle/contact lens prescriptions from the patient's record like my previous software had. Also while there is a prompt response for the questions, you have to submit it online, and wait until someone calls you; they don't always call at a convenient time. So it becomes a phone-tag situation.

Recommendations

Look for the minimum functions that you need. The ease of connection and use is also important. It is also smart to look for the ways in which you can resolve any issues that you have or get answers when you need help.

I like the simplicity of the EHR and the ability to access it from a tablet or phone. It was easy getting everyone in the office caught on the the EHR which I thought would be quite a task.

Likes Least

I don't like that controlled substances cannot be prescribed, being told this from the beginning or seeing if there were alternatives would've been helpful. Also the difficulty of sending lab or imaging orders to any company not affiliated with Health Gorilla is inconvenient. The first person that helped me establish the EMR and that gave me my first training was extremely helpful. The next lady that was in charge of our training was pretty difficult to contact, it got to the point that her voicemail box was full.

Recommendations

Make sure the imaging and lab companies you use are affiliated with Health Gorilla because you will have a hard time sending orders (I still don't know how). Be sure you are computer savvy or have someone at your office that is.

Our providers and office staff have loved Dr Chrono from the 1st week we've used it. We are still learning all the in's and out's but so far, its GREAT! They have allowed for lots of customization and the training has been very helpful.
The Support Team we have from Dr Chrono has been so helpful. The respond to emails quickly, they touch base on their own, they return calls within the business day.
It's also so great bc it's cloud-based, the providers or staff can schedule patients, make clinical notes, check AR, look at the live claims feed, etc from the office, home, hospital, on vacation...

Likes Least

There are some things that are NOT customizable that make the workflow not so awesome. For example, we are a General Surgery office and regularly need to schedule a patient for a Recall visit for 1, 3, 5, and/or 10 yrs. There is no way to add the patient to a Recall list (ie: all patients that need a recall visit on September 2019). At this point, we are only able to add a flag to the patients chart and search by that flag. It will build a report pulling ALL flags but no way to organize by date...so that sucks. Dr Chrono does have a reddit style up thumb/down thumb suggestions space so maybe the Recall issue will get built if enough providers want it.

Recommendations

There is a free version so I would suggest the providers/office staff get a free acct and mess around with it.

We looked at 5 other EHR's very seriously and chose Dr Chrono. So far, we are very happy with our choice!

I do not like the organization of the system. There does not seem to be a definitive home page, and if there is it is not very clear. It seems like there should be an easier way to pull up notes. Feels like I have to go to 5 different pages before I can access as SOAP.

Recommendations

Every EHR is going to have positives and negatives. It is difficult to determine most of the flaws until you actually have the system up and running and use it for a couple of weeks. Pick the 2 or 3 most important things, like being able to customize templates, and make decision based upon that.

I was one of the early users of drchrono EHR when I opened my neurology practice back in 2010, when it was the first truly user friendly and mobile platform to take advantage of the iPad and their features when they were recently released, and I knew then that it had a lot of potential. The ease and efficiency of making your own templates and documenting notes, etc. definitely not only made my transition into private practice less stressful but also more fun than I had anticipated. At that time, there were only a few good options, and many, if not all, were way out of the budget of a solo practitioner who was just starting out. Drchrono's staff were always friendly and willing to help every time I would call about issues, and I never had any problem with them. As my practice grew, I saw how the whole team and staff at drchrono also grew over the years, and how the services and products evolved and expanded at such a rapid pace in keeping with advances in technology, and they're always finding ways to help the physician and staff become more efficient. Even though I closed my practice in 2014 as I took on a new job as an employed physician for a hospital, I would not hesitate going back to using drchrono EHR, knowing how easy and intuitive their system is.

Likes Least

I still wish there is a better way to allow practitioners who no longer are practicing or no longer needing to keep their drchrono EHR account active, to be able to store their records and still have access to them per medicare guidelines; I'm still having difficulty syncing them to my Box account as instructed.

Recommendations

There have been so many new software developed over at least the past 5 years I'm sure, that take advantage of mobile platforms and I'm sure there are several that may seem just as good, if not better; but after taking a closer look, when it comes to experience, ease-of-use, and reliability in the use of electronic mobile devices and integrated services / products for medical records in an outpatient medical practice setting, I think drchrono is hard to beat.
