Kareo is a Web-based EHR, medical billing, and practice management used by thousands of physicians across the United States. This system suits small practices and billing companies. With Kareo, practices can schedule patients, confirm insurance, manage delinquent accounts and the collections process, store patient documents, develop customized reports and more.

Practices can be up and running within 48 hours of signing up. The system starts at a low monthly rate with no contract, no set-up fees without the worry of maintaining and updating the software.

Kareo has been a great tool for our practice. We are a non-profit so we had to be careful that we got the functionality we needed without breaking the bank. Kareo is exactly that. It's easy to use, allowing us to chart patient encounters, bill claims and analyze practice data.

Pros

The interface is fairly intuitive and easy to use. We love the messaging features within the program. Charting is easy.

Cons

Some of the practice/claims management processes are cumbersome and confusing. Additional functions to the calendar would be nice including interval scheduling. An Android app would be wonderful and a Mac compatible PM program would be great too. Workflow is hard to track where you can't easily where appointments are in the process of signing, submitting a bill, etc.

Advice to Others

Take advantage of the online training videos. Ask lots of questions. Make sure you are comfortable with the software before you dive in. Other than that, Kareo works great for our small group practice.

Getting someone to help you is a hassle. Chat is often not available. Telephone: no one ever answers. I have waited more than 40 min several times and had to hung up. If you send an email to support they keep on creating new case numbers but there is no response to your inquiry. And they Lee on charging your cc!

Kareo is NOT suited for mental/behavioral health. It is designed for health providers and probably works great for them but for mental health, save your money and the headaches.

Some aspects of this program are alright, others are frustrating. Creating "encounters" is so frustrating as there is a constant need to "save" your work, it is pretty much impossible to get back into an account when a co-pay has changed or the insurance has changed. A person can figure it, eventually, but it does take a lot of time (of which I am limited) and trial and error. I don't have time to be making phone calls to "Support" then to sit on hold! I am relunctant to do my billing through this program. I have to search for another program!

Kareo is a very easy system to learn. It is great for keeping general notes and documents for your business. The only drawback from a mental health standpoint is there is no feature for treatment planning and they charge a substantial amount of money to create a customized note template.

Kareo is a part of the new breed of cloud based ehrs. Right now they are in a transition from a windows desktop app to a web based interface. Customer support is not terrible but lacking. They have a managed billing service they offer which has great customer service. The ehr is decent and has some ui issues (who doesn't)

Cons

Poor customer service for everything else. Correcting billing errors is a nightmare. You leave a voicemail for their finance department and someone eventually may or may not call you back. I'm concerned about their up charges. The ehr was free but it now a paid product.

Advice to Others

If you know your way around billing software and basic ehr use, Kareo is a good value. If you require technical assistance or have a question about billing, look elsewhere. Overall, you'll be happy when it works.

My biller used Kareo. When her business closed I stayed with Kareo billing and started using the EHR because it was free if you used their billing services. I never liked the actual EHR but it's integration with the billing software was important. I previously used the old version of MISYS which was noncompliant with the new rules under Obamacare.

In comparison to MISYS and like anything free, this program is far, far inferior. It was like going from a Mercedes to a bicycle. Some examples:

·Scanned documents are all lumped together in one box unlike MISYS where documents are sorted under consults, studies, labs, hospital, etc and easily found.

·The font on prescriptions is 6-8 and can't be changed. It's so tiny I'm embarrassed whenever I have to give a patient a script.

·I'm in Ohio. Kareo was cited by the Ohio Pharmacy Board for noncompliance. Escribing was shut down all summer. Now at the end of the day I have to print out and maintain a list of every script I write.

·I can't see prescriptions from other doctors. They don't use Silver Scripts.

I could go on but the worse thing just happened. I was given a 28 day notice of a 40 % price increase in what they charge me for billing so I'm leaving. I discovered, as did another reviewer in this thread, that my data is hostage. I'll have to pay monthly to JUST LOOK at the EHR data. Or I can printout every patient's chart before they shut me off.

They are shaking me down and holding my data as hostage. This is egregious but probably legal on their part and is probably in the contract I signed.

Ease of use, can create your own templates specific to your practice which makes notes a breeze as well as ensures all relevant data covered. Billing is right there so you can make sure visits are being paid and quickly create Superbill. Eprescribe is simple and insurance formulary populates right on the screen.

Pros

Ease of use. Seamless integration with billing platform- previously used another EMR and lost significant amount of billing as data didn't cross over.

Cons

As with all new things, there's the set up and learning curve. Transferring appointments.

Advice to Others

Set it up before you plan your launch date. Get a couple of months worth of appts transferred over so you can start booking new in there. Set up your templates, labs, and make a list where different documents are going before you start.

Long hold time. Many support personnel do not know much and have to look things up or put you on hold to ask. Not good for pediatrics. No family accounts.

A very good product for medical billing. I was a little nervous in the beginning because I did not have anyone to train me in person. The customer service assigned someone to me so if I had any questions or concerns they would be there for me. They stood true to their word. I would get emails and phone calls to see if everything was going the way it should. They made sure I had everything I needed to get it up and running. I didn't really know what all I needed at the time because I had only been billing for about 5 months and only had used the system we had at the time.
The ease of use is wonderful. I would recommend this software for any practice because it would suit the needs of any medical billing. I have been using this software for 3 years now and find that I am very pleased with it.

Advice to Others

I think if you have a chance to talk to anyone who uses this software you should. It works for small offices or large hospitals. Kareo will connect you with someone who uses the product not just one of there representatives.

Since signing up to Kareo their support team has been excellent on giving us advice what we need and don't need for our practice. They follow up after each training class. The training classes has been informative about their product and functionality of their software. Always after each class they always guides us to the support page if we need additional self training videos. They always ask if we have any question before continuing on the lesson.
