drchrono EHR Software

drchrono EHR is a patient care platform that offers customization at the point of care and on the go. In addition to EHR, drchrono also includes scheduling, billing and patient reminders. It is available on iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch.

Healthcare providers can utilize only the applications, technology and back-office functions they need. This platform automates patient check-ins, documentation, e-Prescribing, medical billing and more.

The patient personal health record app (PHR) and patient check-in apps guide patients through registration; at their next visit they simply confirm their information with a tap.

M*Modal lets providers tap, speak and document patient visits on the software's built-in forms, all of which can be customized.

FreeDraw is an available app that lets providers and office staff notate diagrams, X-rays or other files; they can also use the iPad's built-in cameras to take pictures and embed them in the patient's record.

Prescriptions can be sent electronically via iPhone, iPad, and the Internet; software can offers e-fax capabilities.

Pros

This product was difficult to use overall, so it's hard to say what worked well. They have an excellent reputation but I didn't find that the actual product matched up.

Cons

The cost is high for smaller businesses. Their customer support isn't great. And the templates were kind of rigid and not flexible enough to be adapted to my practice.

Hello Monica,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your review. Our records indicate that you are currently using our free trial version which limits you from fully enjoying all of our features. I also see that you have not had a product demo yet in order to learn more about our EHR software such as how to customize templates to fit your specific needs. There are many Acupuncture practices using DrChrono EHR successfully and we would love the chance to show you how.

We look forward to hearing from you,

drchrono EHR provides much of the functionality that providers need in order to complete their clinical workflows

Cons

this software is generally well-built, but could be more useful if it had wider market penetration. The future of EHRs is interoperability and drchrono EHR is in an optimal position to expand if it integrates seamlessly.

Their customer service is broken, to the point that if you have suggestions for them, they direct you to a forum where your post will be never be read by the "developers".

Pros

I think the product does a good job at collecting information, and makes it easy to store important health data for patients.

Cons

Not very good at generating reports. Does not organize data in the way that would work best for my company. Customer service is poor.

Hello Mickey,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your review. We take each and every feedback seriously, and would like the opportunity to make this right. Your account manager has already reached out to you and we would like to work with you directly to provide the appropriate training on various reports the system can generate. We would also like to mention that our developers are taking customer feedback through various channels, and many customer suggestions have been turned into product features as you may have seen from our monthly product update newsletter.

Your account manager is always a good resource for product related questions so you are using DrChrono to its fullest potential. He can provide product demonstration and be able to review how you are using DrChrono EHR. Please don’t forget to schedule your next account review!

Thank you,

Good but could be a lot better

Ease-of-use

Functionality

Product Quality

Customer Support

Value for Money

Pros

1. It has a very elegant and eye pleasing layout which is the main reason I believe I tried this software. Navigating through the system is overall intuitive and generally easy to use.

2. It has a great functionality with the IPAD and that is why it has been awarded the best system on the IPAD. I don't even use my lap top to see patients. I use my iPad and then I supplemented this with my lap top. Most functions that are done on the laptop can be done on the iPad. This includes setting electronic prescription. In fact, some things are better done on the iPad such as reviewing the records and chart.

3. Electronic prescription is easy.

4. The system has a great fax capability with ability to fax almost from any screen and to fax most documents.

5. Dictation: The interface with dragon is decent although could be better compared to other EMR. The M-mode dictation that comes with the program is great. While the recognition is slightly below dragon, the M-mode dictation has the advantage of being portable as it is used with the iPhone are iPad. The downside, however, is that he cannot be used on a laptop. However, I really like the M-mode feature and use this more than dragon.

6. Cloud base which can be accessed from anywhere where there is internet and from most devices. ( It cannot be accessed from none appple Smart devices - Smart phones or tablets).

7. Notes and documents are automatically saved in an external third party cloud base ie BOX. This is actually a very good feature as a backup to have a access to our clinical notes and documents. This is of vital importance in cases where access to drchrono is not possible such as going to another system. The downside to this, however, is that certain parts of the chart (phone messages or email messages for example) are not stored in this third party system

Cons

1. Lack of awareness of what a true legal chart is: As much as I like this system, this is the main reason why I may have to leave and find another system. They are totally clueless as to the difference between what a end-user sees in the software and what the complete chart looks like when requested from an outside source. There is a huge difference and the company do not appreciate this difference. If an outside agency (DEA, medical board or an attorney) ask for the complete medical records, the clinical notes and documents stored at the BOX account can be easily exported. However, communications between you and the patient by phone or email are not stored in the box account and not included in this information. When I have spoken with them about this, they inform me that I could simply print each phone or email encounter. This however is completely ludicrous - as in supposed the patient has 100 phone or email encounters.
For unknown reasons, in refilling the same medications from visit to visit, it simply takes it out of the medication list that is generated in the complete dictated notes. This gets very confusing especially for an outside agency that is reviewing the chart. Its is completely confusing as to what medication the patient is taking at the time of the visit. For example, if I have a patient who is on OxyContin 80 mg twice a day, gets a refill on this medication, it takes it off the medication list in the completed dictated note. This creates mass confusion. The way it appears in the signed completed note, is as if this patient was not on any opioids at all, but then all of sudden, I prescribed them a very high dose of 80 mg OxyContin twice a day. (This would be malpractice). This creates absolute confusion especially if my chart is being reviewed by the medical board or the DEA.
Furthermore, the signed dictated note does not include the number of medications prescribed. So for example in the case of this person who was getting OxyContin 80 mg twice a day, the note does not include that the total count of the prescription given such as #60 or #480. This makes a difference to a DEA offcer who is reviewing the records. Again, when I have discussed this with drchrono, they simply state that review of the medication history in the software can tell this information. However, they do not recognize that the only thing an outside chart reviewer has access to is signed clinical notes and not the complete electronic medical records. Again, this shows that they are clueless about difference of what the software end-user sees and what an outside reviewer has access to.

2. Templates are still in their infancy and generally they are limited compared to other EMRS.

3. Customer service: They responded very quickly to support tickets. Generally, if there is an major system wide issue it get results rather quickly. For other issues, it tends not to be resolved in a timely fashion or not at all.

Hi Dr. Doonquah,

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate the list of product features that have been working well for you. We are very proud of our award winning cloud-based EHR platform. As for the challenges you’ve mentioned, I would like to clarify some of the points that you may not be familiar with below:

Phone call logs: You do not need to print/download each phone call to log it into your box account. You can print a full record of communication by patient in the patient communication report (under reporting tab). Once this is created you can upload it as a document for it to sync to box or manually include it as an additional document. Your account manager will reach out to show you.

You mentioned DrChrono templates are limited but the flexibility and customization capability of DrChrono EHR is one of our core strengths compared to other EMRs. We’ve heard many compliments from both big and small practices how powerful they are and the type of productivity boost our templates bring to their practice. I see that your practice is not currently utilizing our template capabilities to its full potential and that can be easily resolved by our account manager. If you have an ideal template you would like to have in the system we can absolutely build it out for you! Additionally we have released many new template features such as charting by exception, which allows you to set default settings on the template and you can then chart the exception rather than the rule. I also see you do not have any templates set as persistent. This setting can be applied to any template and makes the information charted persist from one visit to the next. Many providers find this to be helpful especially if they frequently copy/paste the same notes.

Thank you for your feedback on our customer service. We do take all of your feedback very seriously and we want to assure you that we have invested many new resources into our customer service team and plan to make many changes to improve our support. Your account manager is always a good resource for product related questions so you are using DrChrono to its fullest potential. She will reach out to you to schedule a call and answer any questions you may have. She will also provide product demonstration and be able to review how you are using DrChrono EHR.

Regarding the medication refills, please note I have escalated this to our development team. We appreciate your feedback. DrChrono is known for our agility in product enhancement and we are always looking to improve our EHR quickly and frequently unlike other EMRs that take a long time to upgrade their system.

Thank you for your detailed feedback and we look forward to speaking with you!

I appreciate all the staff does to make sure I am well taken care of. I even get a check in email every year to make sure I am aware of all the new features.

Pros

I absolutely love using my iPad. There is no computers or bulky stands or even a laptop clogging up my counter space. I have one iPad that I carry from room to room. Cheaper and way better.

Cons

The only thing I wish it had was when I copy an old note often through my mistake I will copy a template that I wish I hadn’t. For example if on the first visit I do an exam and then the next visit all I want to do is type on my SOAP and not the exam page but I accidentally chose copy all previous templates. I would love a "clear template" button on the top of each template.

When running reports you can customize by using extensive filters. I think the program has limitless features. From what I can see so far, you can do anything you need to do on drchrono. Will expand on this as we complete training and get to use the program.

Pros

I love that Drchrono is functional on all apple devices. It's also very convenient for the physicians be able to see their schedule in daily emails. The text reminders and e-mail reminders are very customizable and important. Personally, I love when I get those reminders for my doctor's visits! We are still training, but the program seems to be user friendly and easily figured out when you're not sure what to do. Our trainer is very knowledgeable and readily available for any questions we have.

Cons

The only con I can see at this point, and it's not really a con, is that I feel like there is almost too much automation. You can actually have codes going in when scheduling a patient according to what their complaint is. I think I would not set the system up that tightly. Of course it's up to the practice. I feel it's best if we leave the coding to the specific patients visit. However, some people may like that automation. You can easily tweak it as you go through the visit.

Private practices who are not owned by hospitals and need a good dependable EMR that is fully functional and affordable should give this a look. Wish we would have known about this one sooner. They also offer billing service for those who can't afford to pay a full time staff member with benefits. I am very pleased with the results we get from drchrono

Pros

This is very easy to learn and use compared to EPIC, Allscripts and others I have worked on in the past. The support is excellent when you need it and our account rep is top notch in her willingness to guide our practice and resolve any issues.

Cons

The payment posting needs a little tweaking, but I hear this is in process. When you apply an adjustment amount that is denied and you must write off, it should write it off instead of leaving it in the insurance balance due until you enter another adjustment line with a 45 reason code. I have made a suggestion and they are working on the change.

NEVER CHOOSE AN EMR THAT DOESN'T HAVE A DIRECT TECHNICAL SUPPORT NUMBER

Pros

Digitally receiving e faxes
Fairly easy e-refills
Price point is competative
Custom appointment profiles are nice

Cons

1) There is no tech support number. You can only email tech support. Tech support has taken weeks to get back to us. Most of our concerns have gone unaddressed. People say they will look into an issue and then we will not hear back. EPCS has been down all day. I called the sales number. No one answers. The sales voicemail was full! I emailed every contact I had. No response. I emailed tech support. They wrote that EPCS is fixed and working. EPCS is still not working. I have no ability to talk to a human. No one can give me an ETA, let alone fix the issue. For this reason alone I would never choose this EMR again.
2) You cannot write a note in a patient's chart without creating an appointment.
3) The SOAPNOTE set up is just strange.
4) Our outgoing e-faxes don't work properly and no one has gotten back to us about this issue.
5) There are no lab, radiology, pathology tabs. You have to assign tags manually in each chart.
6) Electronic lab results and uploaded lab results cannot go to the same folder.
7) As soon as we gave our credit card we have not heard from our sales rep and no one seems to care if our account is functional or not.

Hello Kristina,

We are sorry to hear about your experience and would like to follow up with you in regards to the concerns you've noted. During the implementation of our EHR, your practice has been assigned a dedicated account manager who can help you make the most out of DrChrono EHR, and we've been informed that your Account Manager has been in contact with you. In addition, our account management team holds regular account reviews to provide product updates as well as document any feedback you may have.

Our marketing team also sends out our Account Review Request emails to our customers so that we can proactively touch base with any of the customers that want to have their account reviewed or to answer your questions. In terms of technical support, we respond to most of our online support tickets within 1 business day. Moreover, there are numerous knowledge base articles that can answer most of your technical questions. This is a great program but if it had a slightly more efficient layout, speed or ease of use, it would stand out above other systems. It is a decent value for the price.

appreciate that as small single provider in part time practice that monthly cost is reasonable,

Pros

that EMR, electronic prescribing, electronic billing, in one easy to use program, especially like how with electronic billing, patient statements are automatically created once insurance pays their portion, makes billing very easy, cost effective compared to billing service

Cons

delay in getting customer service, no ability to get immediate answer to simple question,

Pros

The ease of completing a competent medical note. The coordination of filling, scheduling, and note-taking. We like that DrChrono works directly with our credit card processor. Could not be happier with the EMR customizable and the speed at which you can complete a note. It isn't the most intuitive software that we have used. There are some archaic features that should be updated and streamlined so the software is more efficient.

Pros

Easy to use on iPad and iPhone, love that fact that I can send a controlled Rx via eRx. Ordering controlled Rx pads are expensive.

Cons

Doesn't show the active allergies in the record when sending a Rx. Would be great if allergies would display on the prescription screen when sending a Rx

time saving and ease of use are the best benefits. once I was up and running very little help is needed.

Pros

Apple and mobile device compatibility is so nice. Just click on drop down arrows and select. I like that I can book patients and reschedule patients when I'm out of the office as I am a small practice and doing a lot of marketing.

Cons

Unable to have the software send emails from our domain name so some people never read the message from drchrono.com. Wish the same features for Apple were available in Microsoft.

Patients feel as if our office is up-to-date, using only the latest technology. Really good for developing high quality value in the patient, even before they are treated.

Pros

The macros are easy to use and simple to customize. Very good for physicians that use Apple products and want to make the clinics they work in very streamlined. Also, patients love to be handed an Ipad instead of a clipboard for on-boarding.

Cons

Not for clinics that use Microsoft software. I would recommend only using Apple technology if you were going to implement Dr Chrono. It was designed to be used on Ipads and it would be very difficult if your entire office was Microsoft oriented and you bring in this new software.

Dr Chrono is a full featured EHR with available practice management tools. Customizable note templates, patient portal, EPCS, integrated lab ordering/results, efax, patient online self scheduling, patient flags, integrated billing insurance platform with realtime eligibility information, and straightforward claims tracking...

We've been using the system, including the billing software, since March 2016 and continue to be pleased. There are a few quirks and frustrations. For example it's not set up perfectly well to pass tasks back and forth between office assistants who may not be in the office every day.

It's a little expensive, but sometimes you get what you pay for. Dr Chrono billing software is so easy to use, I don't have to pay an outside biller. So that offsets the cost quite a lot.

Pros

Comprehensive features, customizable, easy to use billing

Cons

Servers are sometimes slow, no cost differential for low volume providers, only one integrated credit card proecessing vendor, with higher than average fees.

While this program is fairly easy to use we have had lots of continued problems with it. We've frequently submitted help tickets and often I'll get an email asking me to rate my customer support without ever actually getting any help at all. Documentation sometimes deletes itself which is extremely problematic. There has been a whole other host of issues.

Pros

Fairly easy to learn and use

Cons

So many problems

i have been very happy with my decision to use drchrono . I joined about a year ago, and initially the learning curve was hard but then I spent some time with my training gal (forgot her name but she was really helpful), and was able to overcome this.

The layout is easy to use and manageable, love the appt reminders. My staff is all about the color coding too...

Ipad app---AMAZING. I have been searching for a mobile solution and there is nothing like it. You can click boxes, drop down menus and full note is generate for you. love it! also picture taking capability is huge...

can take HIPPA photos and draw on them. Also e-faxing is an udnerrated feature, all patient referrals can be assigned directly.

I'm an Orthopedic Surgeon with my own practice here in Chicago and my wife is an RN over at Northwestern. Earlier on when I was at the hospital, she and I would spend many of our evenings working on our documentation. But since then she had moved into administration and I started my own practice. She began leaving her work at the office and I was still working with paper notes.

I decided to get an EMR system and the system I went with allowed me to type up all of my notes, just like with Epic, but I was still spending time late at work or at home taking care of my notes. Recently, however, a colleague of mine in LA mentioned that he started using drchrono. I had never seen drchrono at any of our conferences and none of the EMR ads or emails mentioned them either. My IT guy didn't even mention that I could be using a cloud based system. But he mentioned their templates and that they had a great iPad application helped him save time on his documentation. So I had one of my staff take a look at one of their demos.

My staff was sold on it for them and said that the templates looked like something that could really help. A demo, a couple of training sessions over the computer, and some effort on creating my medical forms I'm actually having a great experience using this EMR.

As I mentioned at the title, I have a lot of time on my hands now that we have everything implemented and I'm able to go out and spend time with my wife now. Happy wife, happy life.

I've been using DrChrono for two years and love it. Their people have been very helpful who train my staff and built our custom templates. We used several other programs and without a doubt DrChrono is the best. I use an iPad for charting and the office has two laptops, we also have an iPad in reception to check in patients.

I have been a drchrono customer for the last four years (really since the beginning of their time) so this review is my honest opinion of the previous years with drchrono. drchrono has really stepped up their game - I am happy I stayed with them.

I use to wait days before someone would get back to me when I had an issue. I have been blown away that within the last year I haven't had to worry about waiting days to weeks to get answers and I just really realized that as I sent in my last few tickets. The support people were so helpful, I got an answer in less than an hour and they actually addressed my concerns. Such an improvement.

I use to have a lot of downtime with drchrono which made the "efficiency of an EHR" non-existent. I haven't had downtime in I don't know how long which has been great for my practice. I spoke with a few drchrono members who said they were fixing the issue, building out infrastructure (whatever that means) but I am really happy I didn't switch during that time. I can now work throughout the day on my EHR and no longer need to chart my notes at home.

For a period of time I used drchrono with a biller I had on staff. She use to complain that the system was slowing her down because it took a ton of clicks in order to run the report she was looking for or post a payment or whatever. After being assigned an Account Manager I was able to talk with them about this pain point my biller was experiencing; within the next day or so there was a new button added so she didn't have to click around as much as she was having to. She said this has saved her hours every week. I don't think our account would get that service anywhere else.

On another note, my biller had to take a leave of absence because she was having a baby. I didn't know how to follow up on the billing and didn't have anyone else in the office that could help so again I called my Account Manager. She mentioned that drchrono could help me in the meantime or permanently by becoming my biller while she is out. She has been out for two months now and I have to say, the transition was very easy and I am actually making more money since they have stepped up doing the billing services.

As you can see, I am very happy I didn't switch EHR's.

Good luck in your EHR decisions but save yourself the hassle and join drchrono. They listen to you, they are helpful and they are always updating their software (at no additional cost).

Best of luck with your practices.

There are several pros for the use of this program. It is very easy to use! There are a couple of suggestions that would be extremely helpful for our practice. As we make many phone calls for our patients, it would be much easier to use if it was totally electronic with our notes. A phone book section for doctors or on-call numbers would be great. Also, If there was a specific note section for phone calls to patients it would make it much easier for communication purposes. Like the recurring appointments section, it would be nice to have an option have reminders to setup appointments for each pt. For example: John Doe came in and had his initial visit, he needs a 1 month, 6 month, and 1 year follow-up visit. It would be nice to have a reminder pop-up for that patient that he needs to be scheduled a few weeks prior to those dates. Also, it would be helpful if there was a section for a call list (patients that need to be called or cannot get a hold of), as well as a personal note section for each team member (for self reminders, notes, etc.) Just a thought!

I've been a user for 4 years and have consistently battled a total lack of documentation (short of a variety of brief videos) constantly changing features without warning (unlike most packages that roll out well tested updates) and no communication about the changes. It is up to the end user to seek out the info on their blog or elsewhere. No email updates. I hope they pull it together as they have the basis for a good platform.

We use this software in our high-volume dermatology clinic. Having used other EMRs (Nexgen, AdvancedMD, EMA, eClinicalWorks and EPIC) I can definitively say that Chrono is the best. It is easy to customize, easy to use, has the best ipad functionality, excellent customer support, fair pricing and is fast. We invested the time up front to customize the templates to our workflow; this has resulted in very fast and precise documentation that lacks the other 'junk' that EMRs tend to include - our referring doctors appreciate this. I would highly recommend DrChrono.

As many of us can relate, the thought of switching out of an EHR system that I am currently unhappy with seems daunting. I wanted to stick with my dysfunctional EHR rather than taking even more time to move onto another EHR with no guarantee it would be better - but my search is over!
Some cons to start off with: I would like a drop down menu as I go through my notes that is pre-built.
Pros: after working with the Drchrono team, they re-created my notes exactly how I would like to save me time during my examinations, and really make my life so much easier. I do not have to spend my nights doing my charting - it is now completed during my exam with my patient!!
Drchrono and their team have been amazing and they worked with my practice to set up the software on my schedule.
Overall, I am VERY happy I switched over to drchrono.

I have used many EHR systems In various offices and have been extremely frustrated with them all.

Drchrono is simple and not only is the EHR amazing, but the billing software is a life saver too. I don't have to double enter our information anymore into 2 or 3 different systems and I can keep track of where exactly all my money is actually going or not going.

I know our doctors also really like that it's on the iPad so they can take a clinical photo and draw directly on it to document the patients pain points.

Overall, it's a great system and I know our office will be using it for years to come.
