From the outset, WRS Health was designed to enable doctors to run their whole Practice Enterprise, not just electronic health records (EHR), on one platform.

WRS Health was one of the early leaders in the market for web-based electronic health records (EHRs). While there were a number of web-based practice management systems early on, Waiting Room Solutions was one of the first to deliver a true EHR on a web-based architecture. This early mover status has situated the company in an envious position, from the standpoint of EHR vendors that want to move to a web-based model with strong database and connectivity built in.

Market dynamics aside, 2013 WRS Health is a powerful system for EHR, medical billing, patient scheduling, order management, e-prescribing, image management, secure faxing, and disease management, among other capabilities. The product has enough breadth and depth that it has already achieved 2011-2012 ONC-ATCB Certification and CCHIT 2011 Certification. Providers using this system will be eligible for meaningful use incentives.

WRS Health serves roughly 35 specialties, with specific templates, functionality and workflows developed for each. The system also has specific CPT and ICD codes for each specialty. One unique aspect of the company is that the CEO, Dr. Larry Gordon, is a practicing physician. Because WRS has been designed by a practicing physician, it has led to the development of the system's very intuitive, logical workflow.

WRS Health is priced based on the number of providers in the organization and consists of a low monthly subscription fee. Prices include support and upgrades. However, buyers will want to request a detailed price quote as there are discounts available for multi-provider organizations and bundled services.

User-Friendly EMR System

The straightforward options make this easy to use and navigate.

Functionality

Our office combines a typical clinic setting with a surgical center. WRS works great with the clinic procedures, but we are still working out the bugs to make it fully operational for our surgical center.

Product Quality

So far, so good. The quality seems to be top-notch; it's much better than previous EMR programs I've used.

Customer Support

This may be the best part of all. I have reached out numerous times to IT support and have been overly impressed with the help I've received.

Although new to this program in the last 6 months, it already is much easier to use, and it streamlines many functions compared to our old EMR software. Navigation is simple, and customer service is fantastic. I have reached out multiple times for assistance and have been very pleased with the help I have received.

The only complaint I have at this time would be with building templates. It seems a bit more difficult than with our last software, and doesn't it have the same options as what I am used to.

This is an all-in-one software. It combines everything we need, even our website. Have the billing incorporated also saves our office time. It takes a bit to get used to, but once you learn the software, it is an easy, user-friendly program.

It's the best EMR on the market

Very disappointed in this system due to lack of continual improvement.

Ease-of-use

The system often erases what you type into the HPI. I often use Word and then copy and paste into WRS, as the spell check only applies for lowercase words. Also, I do not want to have to retype things, as this is a waste of time. I cannot easily add doctors for surgeries they did. The hospital field is limited in characters, which is another easy fix that has been ignored for multiple years. Surgeons deserve credit for their surgeries performed. It's not easy to change a surgery field, as this field is not editable. If you misspell a surgery, you have to delete it and start over.

Functionality

The needs not being met are customer service needs. Their staff has attitude when improvements are suggested. If I did not have to re-enter demographics and history on each of my patients, I would switch EMRs

I think this system's main flaws are that support staff only pretend to be responsive to end user's needs. Photos are not put into the progress note by date. As I do wound care and skin improvement with lasers, this a big downside. I want to show my referring doctor's improvement in wounds sequentially. This system does not allow for that easily. You can store your photos in the system. You can't put them into your notes well.

Customer Support

Customer support, in my opinion, leaves a lot to be desired. Instead of being helpful, suggestions for improvement are routinely ignored. The ticket system is a pain. I would prefer a direct email. This company makes me feel unwanted. Instead of helping me through a problem, they send me messages that say they are not going to work on the problem that I feel is important because it is not high priority for them. I want a system that wants to make my life easier. This system and this staff couldn't care less.

I demoed 10 programs before deciding on this EMR. It looks easy to use. It has tutorials. I liked that it had coding assistance. It is only good for coding assistance in an office setting. If you happen to practice outside an office setting, such as in a nursing home or in individual home, you are out of luck, as this feature is not functional, even after I have asked for this for five years.

However, it does have a professional look when you print out your progress note.

I would not purchase this again. I requested a drop-down scheduling system and was told this would cost me a considerable fee. I asked for the company to coordinate with my phlebotomist so I could get labs uploaded automatically. This was another fee. The company has not strived to continually improve itself. These are simple programming issues that have not been implemented although they could make my life easier. Customer service has been slow to respond to 90% of my needs. Spellcheck was added after several years of me asking for it. Spell check still does not work for capitalized words or titles. They need additional programmers to fix problems as they are noted by every doctor. Years is a long time to wait for improvements.

Recommendations

Choose a system where the customer service is responsive to your needs. If you want the system to improve with you, this system only slowly improves. I have been patient for years. I have given multiple tickets for improvement of this system. Every request for improvement has proven to be a battle. I'm very disappointed at the customer service here. I'm disappointed most with staff reactions to improvement requests. Instead of trying to implement improvements steadily, I feel ignored.

Most user-friendly EHR

Everything is a click away. There is even a sidebar that shows the most recent charts you were in, so if you forget something, the list is right there.

Functionality

It is fast and keeps up with everything we need. We are a busy practice, and we don't have the time to wait for documents to load or to wait for eligibility to be verified. WRS is real-time and so fast; we just love it.

Product Quality

There are so many features that are included with the our service that were add-ons everywhere else. I love the auto-appointment confirmation.

Customer Support

In the beginning, we called a lot; every time they were there to help and explain to us why we were having these problems. We are very happy with the customer support.

I like the ease of use. We use WRS for our scheduling, billing, and EMR charting; everything works great. There are so many features that we didn't even know were available until we switched over. We are in California and tried programs that are based out here just so we would not have to deal with a time difference, but they were way off from what we needed. Switching over was great and easy. We have not looked at other programs since.

You can save documents, and it's really easy to locate. For example, when scanning a patient's insurance card, you can save it to the system, and it is easy to access. Most importantly, it is saving the trees because it's paperless.

To put in a request for any change, you must submit a ticket. It would be better if you could call someone and make the change.

Recommendations

Make sure the system really saves the information that is put in. We are not a primary doctor's office. We don't really use all the other categories, but for the ones we use, we always have to double-click save because it doesn't save the info all the time.

No More Waiting on Other Software

Practice Management Review

The basic office note is very easy to use. We have been able to create three templates that work for us.

Functionality

We can create and fax a note. E-prescribe is a standard function and works well. We would like to interface with labs and radiology centers.

Product Quality

We have no problem with the quality of the product. However we cannot say the same about Tech Support or Customer Service.

Customer Support

We have not had many good experiences with customer service and have not actually spoken with any reps in over two years. Too much time is spent typing with tech support. It would be so much easier to speak with someone or have remote accessibility.

WRS is web-based and has virtually 0% downtime. Start-up is quick.

I like that almost everything can be accessed from more than one place, whether it be clicking through the different tabs, hovering over a patient name, or right clicking.

Everything is all in one place! I have been in other practices that use an EMR for scheduling and a separate EMR for patient records. I find this time-consuming and difficult. I love that within three clicks, I can schedule an appointment and print an EMR note from a patient visit.

I do not have any complaints regarding the quality of this product. It is reliable and efficient, and our office is happy with the purchase of this software.

Customer Support

Any time we have a problem, we receive excellent customer service and speedy responses.

This product is very user-friendly, which is helpful when training new staff or trying to get information quickly for a patient. We always have someone to help us when putting in a ticket with a question or issue, and it gets solved quickly. The navigational tabs are organized and easy to click through to find what information we need. We are not a huge practice, but this product serves as our communication line and does it well.

It works well out of the box. However, we we've needed to change something, we've basically been on our own.

The front office works okay. The back office (billing, etc.) was unusable, and we went back to our old system.

It works well. We haven't had any downtime, but the support has been lacking.

They tell us to write support tickets, but when we have, they have gone unanswered.

The software is very customizable. I like the individual notes which can be generated on each patient. Also, it is possible to add multiple types of data: clinic notes, allergy tests, shot records, audiograms, etc. The vendor has some special adaptions for ENT which has helped our practice. The notes are very professional-looking. It is easy to send notes to referral MDs with the click of a button. E-prescribe is also quite easy and reliable.

The support can be unresponsive. We have called to indicate that a feature was not working, the response has been to write a support ticket. However, when we did, the support ticket was never answered.

Recommendations

Overall, it's a good system for the front office. We haven't been able to use the back office.

It can be used easily with voice recognition. If you don't like that, it has lots of customized drop-down lists for check boxes. You can create templates for everything.

Functionality

It is very easy to customize preventive care reminders. I have about 50 things that we track, everything from pap tests to immunizations to laboratory.

Product Quality

They're constantly improving this product to make it better and more user-friendly. The patient portal is proving very useful to us and our patients.

Customer Support

They have the best customer support I have encountered in any business. Within reach on the phone, they can always assist with our EMR, or we can email them. Their people are always very friendly and helpful.

I spent two months researching EMRs and picked this one as the best one for the price. I have been very happy with it. Their support people are top-notch. It is very customizable. They continue to improve it all the time.

I can't generate an INR flowsheet. There is a workaround. Systems that would do this cost a lot more.

Take your time to understand how an EMR is going to work in your practice. View demonstrations of multiple systems and try to think about patients you see every day and how that EMR would work in your practice.

Adding complexity slowing it down

Ease-of-use

Relatively few clicks are needed, and it has a simple interface. It's fully web-based, so there is no need to maintain it. But as they are adding users and functionality, system response time (e.g. time between adding a diagnosis and screen refreshing) is getting longer, sometimes unbearably so.

Functionality

Some simple functionality such as ordering lab panels is not implemented. Electronic medication refills cannot be automatically routed to office staff unless they login as a prescriber.

Product Quality

Many features are and afterthought, and their implementation has errors.

Customer Support

We have found them to be unhelpful. Their classic response to us has been that it cannot be done.

It used to be a simple, intuitive, and fully web-based system.

Recommendations

The system suffers from haphazard development. The priority of developers is to achieve MU2, ONC, etc. certification. This is at the expense of system response time, longer screen refresh time, and ease of use. Make sure that you demo the system online. Do not fall in the trap of the fully-integrated practice management system; it only works if you use other WRS services (e.g. billing). Otherwise, practice management is a messy collection of features provided by contractors. The system used to be inexpensive to implement, but we felt we paid the price later.

I absolutely recommend WRS Health.

Ease-of-use

WRS Health has helped my internal medicine practice by allowing me to keep my patients well-informed. During a visit, we can view their chart together. This allows the patient to keep track of their health history for the entire year.

I did my research before choosing WRS Health. I used an EMR at a previous practice, and as I worked through that system, I noted the things I thought were missing.

I was looking for a web-based program so I would have 24/7 access, and WRS Health provided this. I'm an organized person and WRS allows me to track the important things.

I only have good things to say about the customer support and training team at WRS Health. I'm currently continuing with training, and it's very informative. They are very patient with me and answer my questions in a timely fashion.

Compared to other EMRs which we looked at at, WRS has better methods of blending custom templates, multiple HPI, and easy-to-change ROS. It saves your favorite ICD9/ICD10 diagnoses into categories and can even save your favorite plans linked to your ICD9/ICD10 diagnosis codes. Also, you can view the entire Summary Page on the left-hand side of the screen while you write your Progress Note (WRS doesn't show this important ability in their demo videos but WRS's VP of Sales showed me that it can be done).

In addition, WRS can automatically link the Social History, Family History, Medication List, and Chronic Problem List into your Progress Note. This is an important feature because 50% of the EMR vendors require you to click each of these items individually in order to get them added into your note. As you know, if these items are reviewed and present in your progress note, this automatically increases your E/M billing code. Any lab orders that you order "in-house" using the WRS EMR automatically gets saved in billing so that you don't forget to charge for it.

Regarding WRS's ePrescribe, the SIG is automatically saved for you when you choose the same medication in the future. So, the SIG is blank the first time, but then it is already filled out for you in the future. Very few ePrescribe programs will autofill the SIG for your meds.

WRS' team did a really great job of leading me around their eMR system. In addition, this system has Dragon Speech Recognition software (if you like voice recording your progress notes instead of typing/clicking a lot) built in along with Android Touch Computer capabilities. I don't know about Mac/iPad, but since this system is web-based, it shouldn't be an issue. You might ask anyway if you are a Mac person.

Our OB/GYN practice, Comprehensive Women’s Healthcare is located in Grapevine, TX. We were founded in 1998, and we see about 100 patients a day.

We had been using WRS Health EMR. When our main biller resigned, we decided to outsource our billing to WRS Health Billing Services because they have expert billing knowledge. It was logical to have the company who designed the billing software perform the billing services.

Since we started using WRS Health Billing Services in July 2012, our revenue has increased. We have utmost confidence that the processes are working correctly. When you use in-house staff, you aren’t sure whether the employees are really knowledgeable.

Choosing WRS Health Billing Services helps us to make certain that reimbursement is in sync with contracted rates. Previously, our billing staffer was manually looking at the spreadsheets of the reimbursement of the contracted rates. The Eligibility Mismatch Report is built into the system, and that is fantastic.

WRS Health Billing Services has given us important information about our good/bad payers and those who may not be paying us accurately. One of our physicians didn’t have any confidence that the funds we were being paid was really a contracted rate. WRS Health Eligibility Mismatch Report and all of the Billing Services give him 100 percent assurance.

With WRS Health, it’s very easy to run reports on our in-office injections and procedures to glean which are profitable to do in the office vs. those that aren’t. For example, we stopped administering Depo Provera® birth control injections in the office and LEEP procedures for abnormal pap smears in the office. We started doing LEEP procedures in the hospital. The reimbursement was so low compared to our cost of actually performing it because we had to pay for many supplies.

WRS Health helped us see that because we were able to run reports by CPT code and look at the payers. It makes you more cognizant of your contracted rates.

WRS Health Billing Services has also helped our practice identify that Ablations and Essure Procedure are more profitable for us to do here than in the hospital. WRS Health has expert coding specialists who make sure that our doctors are coding more fully.

The advantages of WRS Health Monthly Billing Analysis Meetings cannot be underestimated. They show us where we fall short, what we are doing right, and what we can concentrate on. We are learning how we can improve to capture more revenue. They also point out if our denials are due to typos or certain health plans. We share that information with our employees so they can make improvements.
