From the outset, WRS Health was designed to enable doctors to run their whole Practice Enterprise, not just electronic health records (EHR), on one platform.

WRS Health was one of the early leaders in the market for web-based electronic health records (EHRs). While there were a number of web-based practice management systems early on, Waiting Room Solutions was one of the first to deliver a true EHR on a web-based architecture. This early mover status has situated the company in an envious position, from the standpoint of EHR vendors that want to move to a web-based model with strong database and connectivity built in.

Market dynamics aside, 2013 WRS Health is a powerful system for EHR, medical billing, patient scheduling, order management, e-prescribing, image management, secure faxing, and disease management, among other capabilities. The product has enough breadth and depth that it has already achieved 2011-2012 ONC-ATCB Certification and CCHIT 2011 Certification. Providers using this system will be eligible for meaningful use incentives.

WRS Health serves roughly 35 specialties, with specific templates, functionality and workflows developed for each. The system also has specific CPT and ICD codes for each specialty. One unique aspect of the company is that the CEO, Dr. Larry Gordon, is a practicing physician. Because WRS has been designed by a practicing physician, it has led to the development of the system's very intuitive, logical workflow.

WRS Health is priced based on the number of providers in the organization and consists of a low monthly subscription fee. Prices include support and upgrades. However, buyers will want to request a detailed price quote as there are discounts available for multi-provider organizations and bundled services.

I like that WRS Health is an integrated product for registration, charting, and billing. The support staff has always been helpful and is responsive to suggestions to make workflow even easier. They are very reasonably priced, especially for a single provider medical practice.

The perfect EHR does not exist, but WRS Health comes close. A few points that I would change. First, I would allow the growth charts to toggle between imperial or metric measurements. Second, real-time on-screen notification of Patient Portal messages would be ideal. Lastly, I would like less clicks to view lab results, but this is most likely a result of my small practice being unable to have direct electronic communication with labs (which require higher volume to offset the cost of connection). Regarding WRS Health as a vendor, I have nothing but good things to say.

Recommendations

Ask a sales rep if you can test drive the product for a few days.

I have been using WRSHealth for almost 3 years. It is very adaptable and customizable. Their staff and support are great. They keep improving it. Meaningful use is "built in," so we can track our progress. There are also built in training videos on meeting meaningful use targets.

Recommendations

Look at how it will work for your practice. Make sure you can track preventive care easily and customize it as recommendations change.

Fairly easy EMR for clinic charting. Adaptable. We have three different providers, and all three use different methods for charting from typing to templates to dictating.

Lack of a consolidated calendar. As we are surgeons, we are different places throughout the week, and at the moment there is no good way to see your calendar for the week at all the different locations. We still have to toggle back and forth. We have been told they are working on this.

Recommendations

As for evaluating, I recommend doing several demos of different EMRs. Pay attention and take notes. The right fit for your practice is out there.

The WRS system is easy to use. Staff can easily figure out how to use the system using the self-help training modules in the system. It allows for an efficient clinic flow. The integration with the billing module makes billing seamless and efficient. The system can be accessed on a computer, laptop, or tablet. This allows providers catch up on notes offsite. It enables connections with labs, thereby allowing faster reception of lab results. The patient portal allows patients to interact with their provider and access their chart. You can customize the patient portal using the provided templates to build a clean, attractive portal.

In some cases, it's not a perfect fit for mental health. That said, upgrades have been occurring, which does enhance the system.

Recommendations

Consider your clinic flow, records maintenance, ease of use, billing integration, and patient portal usability and attractiveness.

I like seeing everything separated in the EMR under different categories, and it is easy to check patients in and out.

The software was relatively easy to learn. It meets most of our office's needs, and the vendor was very willing to help with the learning curve and customizing it to meet our needs.

The system calls a patient at home after the office has scheduled them for an appointment. It calls them back to register them, which is redundant.

When searching for particular appointment types (e.g., a slot for an r-wave), it will pull up all 15-minute appointments when I am looking for a 45-minute slot.

WRS is a vast improvement over the last program we used. This program is simple, easy to use and understand, and fairly simple to learn. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for EMR software.

The only problem I have had is that the software will often freeze, and if I am in the middle of charting, I lose my data and have to re-enter it when I close and open the program back up.

Recommendations

EMR programs are very complex and need need to document everything, so make sure you take advantage of all this software can do. Take the training, listen to tips and tricks of super-users, and have time to play around with test patients in the system.

Our medical office has been using this EMR software for a few months now, after switching from a previous EMR. Compared to our last software, this seems easier to use. I'm able to find medical records, labs, and reports quicker. Also, the patient portal on the website that ties in with the software has been great.

I'm not sure if this is a WRS problem or a network problem, but this software does freeze up and need to be closed and re-opened more than occasionally.

Recommendations

Take a while before your office goes live, and make sure you fully understand how to use this software. Ask for help if anything is unclear.
