Epic was lots of screen changes to enter information. None of that in Elation. Cerbo is basically a blank canvas, overkill for most things, and a separate filing cabinet drawer for everything making finding anything difficult. By comparison, Elation is SO. EASY. Saves time, less aggravation, more complete charts. I am so happy I started with Elation as I have no intention of changing. Ratings Breakdown 5 Ease of use 4 Value for money 5 Customer support 5 Functionality Pros: I love that I don't have to think about a chart layout while I am charting as the layout is already set up and you only need to fill in the boxes. It is very intuitive and the descriptors they use make sense. And everything is on one page! What to look at a previous chart? You can have it open right next to the chart you're working on. Same with labs. You can write a referral right from the chart and send it straight away. Most user boxes in the chart can easily be dragged and rearranged. Everything is easy, logical, and intuitive and thus a huge timesaver. Cons: When you are typing in a box, you have to hit "shift + enter" to move down a line and not down to the next box. That's really the only trick. A con is that there is a little "x" in the bottom right of a box and if you accidently hit that, everything in the box is gone and there is no "ctrl Z' to get it back. I also appreciate that most of the time they are quite responsive as well - I get help quickly when I have an issue with something. Cons: The iPhone app. Not very good at all. The login is to tedious and it doesn't have enough features. Elation over the years has not really put a lot of effort into making it better either. And I've used about a dozen of them. Would I buy the product again? Yes. Would I recommend it, Yes. Though if the price keeps climbing I may have to rethink my choice. Ratings Breakdown 5 Ease of use 4 Value for money 1 Customer support 4 Functionality Pros: Ease of use. I can teach a new provider the basics in minutes and send them out to see patients. The patient charts are laid out by date and time so you can either scroll or use the search function to find what you need. Usually the information you need is within 2 or 3 clicks. You don't have to scroll through or click through screen after screen to find what you need. I used one system where you had to click through 31 screens to get to the front patient page. With this system 1 or 2 clicks and you have the information you need. If you accidentally delete a note its easy to retrieve it. Cons: Terrible customer service. You are more likely to get the President of the USA on the phone before you can get someone separated from their keyboard and answer a phone or call you back. The help files (FAQ) are getting better but they are equally worthless. You can spend hours trying to find or fix a problem that could easily be fixed by a short phone call from a real person. I've been using the Elation Software over 10 years and they are simply not listening when we tell them they need to answer the phone. The scheduling module needs work. To change a patients appointment you have to physically delete it and reschedule in the new time. No drag and drop. You can't schedule repeat visits for patients but you can schedule repeat visits for staff meetings and such. All my patients are seen every month which means I have to schedule each patient manually every month. Reasons for choosing Elation Ease of use and the layout made sense for primary care. I chose Elation for my new practice, and every day it delights me. What I like most is that it is modern and able to do things one would expect to be able to do based on the technological advances of today. There are so many common sense functions that Elation can do that my previous EMR couldn't do. Cons: I worry about the customer support, because I have heard that it is seriously lacking in this product. Happily, nothing so far has gone significantly wrong for me to have to get help; every question I have had has been answerable through Elation websites and online forums or Elation Facebook groups. I do also worry about the cost; it is affordable to me now, but I worry that the company will take advantage of me in the future and that the cost will rise exponentially when it would be harder to switch. I've seen social media posts where people complain that the price gets jacked up unexpectedly with time. Reasons for choosing Elation I heard that Atlas did not have a good portal for communication with patients so I ruled that out early. I had a demonstration with Cerbo but I didn't like it visually. The demonstration of Elation was better -- the layout was more in tune with how my brain organizes a chart. I’m only using this because it is the established EMR for my clinic. Cons: I’m over two weeks into my new job, and can’t schedule a single patient in until they complete mapping with our scheduling software. With my practice model, no patients = no income, despite a rapidly growing list of patients wishing to sign up. Our office manager has been emailing daily, and gets generic messages saying they’re “working on it”. Getting an estimated wait time has been like pulling teeth. I emailed them directly, asking for a rough estimate of wait time, and to better explain why there are delays. No response after 3 days. Also, the training videos are quick, soundless videos of someone clicking through charts, with no further detail. Also, I’m paying for this, but unable to use it. I had stringent criteria when selecting an EMR, and Elation met those needs initially. However, once I was fully integrated and reliant on their system, they removed key functionality that had been a dealbreaker in my decision to use their software. Their proposed solution was for me to hire additional staff to handle the added workload this change created—a costly and inefficient resolution. When I found an alternative software solution that could bridge the gap, Elation would only permit integration if I first paid for software development time (a reasonable request I was willing to meet), but on top of that, they demanded an additional $500 per month, per provider, indefinitely. This meant I had to pay a substantial ongoing fee just to mitigate a problem Elation itself caused by removing critical features that were in place when I signed up. On top of that, Elation has redefined what it means to be a part-time provider, further increasing my costs. Originally, the part-time rate applied to providers seeing patients for fewer than 10 hours per week, a condition I verified before subscribing. Without notice, Elation changed this definition to any provider logging into the system more than three days a week will be charged as a full time provider. This means I will be forced to pay full time access for my provider, who only sees patients for 2 to 5 hours per week, I cannot disallow her from simple tasks like checking her schedule or reviewing lab results. This is a completely unreasonable and arbitrary shift. Customer service has become practically non-existent, leaving us with little support or recourse. Overall, partnering with Elation has proven to be an enormous mistake, leading to substantial operational and financial setbacks.
