Why we like CharmHealth:
CharmHealth stands out as the best free EMR in our list of the best EMR software for 2024.
The free version includes all EHR tools plus some for practice management—but the paid version unlocks all features. Users rate its two-way audio and video tool, HIPAA compliance, and appointment management as the best features.
Who should use CharmHealth:
CharmHealth is a good choice for smaller practices, offering a broad set of features in its free version, which is only limited by the number of monthly interactions. Our Analysis of CharmHealth's Pricing Plans
We’ve taken a close look at CharmHealth’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) pricing options to evaluate their suitability for various healthcare practices. CharmHealth offers three main pricing plans: the Free Plan, the Encounter Plan, and the Provider Plan. Each plan caters to different practice sizes and needs, and understanding the pros and cons of each is crucial for making an informed decision...
Free Plan
The Free Plan is designed for small practices or those just starting out. It allows up to 50 patient encounters per month and is limited to one provider and five users. Key features include patient records management, custom health vitals, and basic practice management tools.
Pros:
- Cost-Effective: As a free offering, it provides essential EHR functionalities without any financial commitment.
- No Hidden Fees: There are no ads or hidden costs associated with this plan.
- Basic Features Included: Suitable for very small practices that require fundamental EHR capabilities.
Cons:
- Limited Encounters and Patients: Capped at 50 encounters per month and 1,000 patients, which can be restrictive as the practice grows.
- Limited Users and Providers: Supports only one provider and a small team, limiting scalability.
- Restricted Features: Does not include advanced functionalities and add-ons, which may be necessary for comprehensive practice management.
Encounter Plan
The Encounter Plan operates on a pay-per-use model at $0.50 per encounter with a monthly minimum of $25. It offers unlimited providers and users, making it flexible for practices with fluctuating patient volumes.
Pros:
- Flexible Pricing: Pay only for what you use, which can be advantageous for practices with variable patient numbers.
- Unlimited Providers and Users: Supports collaboration across a larger team without additional provider fees.
- Access to Advanced Features: Includes more features than the Free Plan, enhancing practice management capabilities.
Cons:
- Minimum Monthly Fee: Even if encounter numbers are low, the practice is still required to pay at least $25 per month.
- Cost Can Increase with Volume: As the number of encounters rises, so does the monthly cost, which could exceed the fixed cost of the Provider Plan for high-volume practices.
- Potentially Complex Billing: Tracking and predicting monthly costs may become cumbersome due to variable encounter rates.
Provider Plan
The Provider Plan is a fixed-cost model at $350 per provider per month, offering unlimited encounters and users. It’s tailored for practices with consistent and high patient volumes.
Pros:
- Predictable Costs: The fixed monthly fee simplifies budgeting and financial planning.
- Unlimited Encounters: No restrictions on the number of patient visits, accommodating busy practices.
- Comprehensive Feature Set: Includes extensive EHR features and higher data storage limits, supporting robust practice operations.
Cons:
- Higher Upfront Cost: The monthly fee is substantial, which may not be justifiable for practices with lower patient volumes.
- Per-Provider Charges: Costs increase with each additional provider, potentially making it expensive for practices with many providers.
- Potential Underutilization: Smaller practices might not fully utilize all features, leading to a lower return on investment.
Add-On Services
CharmHealth offers various add-ons such as electronic prescriptions (eRx), controlled substances e-prescribing (EPCS), prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) integration, immunization registry access, telehealth capabilities, and more. These services come at additional costs and can be tailored to the specific needs of the practice.
Pros:
- Customization: Practices can enhance their EHR system with features that are most relevant to them.
- Enhanced Functionality: Add-ons like telehealth and eRx can improve patient care and operational efficiency.
- Scalable Solutions: As a practice grows, additional features can be added without overhauling the entire system.
Cons:
- Additional Expenses: Costs for add-ons can add up quickly, increasing the overall expenditure.
- Complex Pricing Structure: Navigating and understanding the cumulative costs of multiple add-ons may be challenging.
- Dependency on Third-Party Integrations: Some add-ons rely on external services, which may have their own limitations or fees.
Conclusion
After evaluating the pricing options, it’s clear that CharmHealth offers flexible solutions tailored to different practice sizes and operational needs.
- For Small or New Practices: The Free Plan or Encounter Plan may be most suitable. The Free Plan minimizes costs while providing essential features, but its limitations may quickly become restrictive. The Encounter Plan offers greater flexibility and scalability without the commitment of a high fixed fee.
- For Medium to Large Practices: The Provider Plan provides the most value, especially for practices with high patient volumes and multiple providers. The predictability of fixed costs and access to comprehensive features can outweigh the higher monthly fee.
- Consideration of Add-Ons: Practices should carefully assess which add-ons are necessary for their operations. While they enhance functionality, they also contribute to the total cost. It’s important to balance the benefits of additional features against the financial implications.
In making a decision, practices should analyze their patient volumes, number of providers, required features, and budget constraints. By aligning these factors with the right pricing plan, a practice can optimize both its operational efficiency and financial performance. As always, it’s advisable to project potential growth and choose a plan that not only meets current needs but also accommodates future expansion.

Great when it works
If they had good customer support, some way to talk to humans in-real-time, and to escalate to support team members that actually understand the platform, it would be nearly perfect.
Pros
For reference, I am a solo practitioner - so I do everything myself. I know how to set up a hyper efficient clinic and I know clinical workflows from both the physician and admin ends. I am also a full-stack web developer, so I know code and I know tech. I have done deep dive evaluations of most of the EHR's designed for small practices and functional medicine. Overall, Charm is one of the most flexible and customizable EHR's out there, and for a tiny fraction of the price, and it is the one I have used for 10 years. I was an early adopter (I think I signed on in their first few years). I have watched the platform grow and improve (though some parts have gotten worse). If you are willing to put in the time to customize your experiene you can do a lot with templates and questionnaires.
Cons
Customer / Tech support is non-existant for real platform issues. They do NOT listen to or respond to feedback when they have made problematic changes to the platform. Customer support mostly regurgitates basic user instructions, and they do not really understand the platform. I usually know and understand the platform better than the support teams (or the onboarding teams). I can't even remember the last time I was able to get a human on the phone or chat... usually I am stuck with waiting a week or more for someone that barely speaks English to gaslight me over email, which means I end up just having to find my own workaround for whatever problem we are having. I also really wish they would allow us to choose what credit card processor we want to work with. BlueFin is a nightmare and we can't take the risk of working with them (see BlueFin review of overcharging, refusing to close accounts, etc) - because that is the only option, we are having to use a completely different scheduling system so we can charge our cash pay patients. Again, they have been getting bad feedback on BlueFin for more than 5 years, and they just will not listen.
Reasons for choosing CharmHealth
Price: most were over $200/mo per practitioner, Charm is $25 Flexibility: Charting process, and Questionnaires are more flexible in Charm than any other system I tested... most EHR's did not allow me to customize my intake forms - which is insane.

- Is CharmHealth legit?
CharmHealth is absolutely a legitimate electronic health records (EHR) system. In fact, according to our analysis of user reviews, it’s the best free EMR of 2024.
