We are using Nagios Core for several years and it helps us to detect problems in our infrastructure sooner than our customers. We are using Nagios Core which is free, but if you want more features, you should buy Nagios XI version.

Pros:
*It is free of charge *It is open-source *So many monitoring plugins and addons are available *Big community *There are many how-to articles
Cons:
*There is no auto-discovery function, every host and service must be added manually. *Nagios web frontend is not user-friendly and you propably will use something like Thruk addon which provide better Web UI. *Hard to configure

Pros:
It is open and it can connect to potentially everything. Also as it is open source you can try it withound spending money. Lately maintenance costs, if you decide to pay for commercial support, is quite high.
Cons:
Software is quite easy to use and it is opensource but the commercial support is starting to be quite high. At this point it could be useful to evaluate other commercial products as it appears that it could be really expensive. The alternative is to use it without the commercial support but maybe some integrations cannot be done and also if you are a company maybe you could be in the need of support and then you have to buy commercial support.

Nagios Core - Significant up front investment of time, but still a solid option

Pros:
Free, open-source solution with a long track record for IT infrastructure monitoring. Vibrant community contributing to the core project, as well as plugins. Also, lots of 3rd party integrations to further extend capabilities as needed.
Cons:
There are easier solutions to use if you are starting from scratch, many of which are derivatives of Nagios. I wouldn't recommend Nagios unless you are comfortable using Linux and doing configuration changes from the command line. Also, version 4.4.7 has a bug that requires a workaround

Reasons for choosing Nagios Core

Existing configuration was easier to upgrade versus starting new

Nagios is a platform created to monitor network services and member teams of the same.

Nagios is a service mainly used to monitor the components of a network, it gives you the benefit that in case of any failure such as high latencies, packet loss or total loss, nagios issues alerts quickly so that you can solve the problem as soon as.

Pros:
- The main advantage of nagios is that it allows you to be aware of the status of each host and services belonging to a network. - Another advantage that nagios has is that it has several types of alerts, with which it indicates the type of failure that a host can present and thus be able to solve it as quickly as possible. - Nagios allows you to integrate with other platforms, something that enriches the amount of benefits you can get from this service. - A very good advantage of Nagios is that its code is open, which allows you to make changes and adjustments according to the needs you have in your network.
Cons:
- Something that would be good to improve in nagios is the fact that by increasing the amount of host in the network, the update takes a little longer, causing some delay in the alerts that can be issued. - It would also be good to create a version with the basic functions and easy installation for users with little experience, since to configure nagios requires a certain level of knowledge with free software.

Pros:
Among the advantages offered by nagios, is the fact that you can monitor all the equipment and services you have in a network, in this way you can know the status of each one, something that is very useful to validate that everything is working correctly in network. Another advantage that nagios has is that it gives you several types of alerts, it shows you if a host is missing packages, if it has high latencies or if it is completely down, this is useful because it helps you to better detect the type of failure that may occur . Nagios also offers you the implementation with other platforms, which is useful when you monitor a network and at the same time use other tools to manage it.
Cons:
Something that does not have very in favor nagios is that when the network is very large it takes a long time to update, which generates some delay in the alerts that can emit some host. Another disadvantage that nagios has is that the configuration is somewhat complex, which requires high knowledge in that area.
