Why I wrote my PhD Dissertation using Google Docs

Overall, my experience with Google Docs was great because it allowed me to write my dissertation utilizing the tabs feature.

    Pros:
I've always been intimidated by Word's features, and Google Docs narrows it down to what I need to write. My favorite feature is the tabs. The tabs helped me write my PhD dissertation with organization and ease, allowing me to click on the different sections and chapters without getting lost in a super-long document. It saved me time by letting me jump quickly from my Literature Review to my Methodology section without having to scroll through 20+ pages to get there. I also appreciated not having to worry about losing my work if the battery died on my laptop, since it auto-saved to the cloud, and I could access my dissertation from different devices and locations. Whether I was at home on my desktop or traveling with my laptop, I could access my work anytime, anywhere.
    Cons:
Well, if I had to nitpick, it would be that Google Docs doesn't have an internal citation management system. I had to add a plug-in, Paperpile, to cite sources efficiently, but sometimes the add-on would glitch and not work properly, though I'm not sure if it was the add-on or Google Docs.

Reasons for switching to Google Docs

I switched from Microsoft Word because I was paying for Google Suite and Google Suite offered more apps that I found useful.

Solid and Simple, But Could Use a Few Tweaks

    5

Overall, my experience with Google Docs has been pretty solid! It's a super convenient tool for writing, whether it's for school, personal projects, or working with others. I love how easy it is to collaborate—being able to see everyone's edits in real-time is such a game-changer for group work. Plus, it’s cloud-based, so I can access my documents from any device without worrying about saving them manually. That said, I do wish it had a bit more advanced features when it comes to formatting and design, like Microsoft Word does. And while it’s mostly reliable, sometimes it can get slow with larger files. But overall, for something that’s free and accessible, it’s hard to beat.

    Cons:
Sometimes the formatting doesn’t stay consistent, especially when copying and pasting from other sources. It can mess up the layout.

Reasons for switching to Google Docs

I was tired of paying for Microsoft 360 and switched to a Chromebook.

    Google Docs Rock!

We have used Google Docs in my college for several years and overall I must agree that Google Docs is a better office suite in general. Google Docs can be used in so many capacities whereas Word documents are mainly just text.

It's less headache-inducing than Word. I haven't needed customer support, because Google Products seem to work. It's so helpful to collaborate in google drive.
    Cons:
There's some limitations compared to a full Microsoft word, but for a free product, it's excellent. All word processors have the annoying quirk of changing everything in the layout when you change over.
