About Iguana

Built for healthcare data environments, Iguana is a data integration platform that enables healthcare organizations to improve all areas of data access including clinical, financial, and operational workflows. With an intuitive integration engine, teams can develop and implement interface and server connections to EHR databases or third-party platforms such as AthenaHealth, NextGen, Allscripts, and more. All data connections, as well as real-time metrics, can be viewed in Iguana's simplified integration dashboard.

Iguana's integrated development environment, Translator, enables the filtering and transformation of messages with advanced customization using Lua. Translator includes source control, data testing, script annotations, and code autocompletion. For complete visibility, Iguana provides a searchable records log that tracks all data transactions including connection acknowledgments, messages, server information, stop and start time of connection, and more.

Support the way it should be done.

We have been extremely pleased with the product, the performance, and the support. We are on Iguana 6.2, but are interested in moving to Iguana X.

The support we get. While we may have problems figuring things out with Lua, we can always contact support and get the help we need. Thanks again.

Cons:

Lua, but that is just because I have no history in it. Syntax is one thing. Knowing what you need to look for to accomplish a task is another.

Reasons for choosing Iguana

While Mirth used JavaScript and Iguana used Lua, it came down to cost.

Reasons for switching to Iguana

This was actually Oracle Health Sciences Integration Engine, which was just a re-branding of Rhapsody sold at one point by Oracle. Rhapsody was too expensive and when Oracle stopped support, we had no choice but to find an alternative. Iguana was slightly cheaper than Mirth.

Iguana Top Dog for HL7

Mostly very positive HL7 dev is a breexe mostly and even non standard HL7 ()I wrote a custom sftp project) was easy to implement, the API is reliable and the API docs were easy to follow.) It seems to have most of what I'd need for HL7, lack of access to java libraries is a dissappointment, but I did not need them for the current project. Java acces is good simply becasue of the huge range of libraries available for custom integrations, I have written libraries for security, email, encryption, custom messge construction, date handling, PDF manipulation and extraction of petient data all of which requied java APIs.

Pros:

The IDE is second to none for rapid HL7 development. The ability to immediately see the result of code on data in the right panel is so good I don't understand why other platforms don't employ it or similar. However, this also leads to the one issue with the approach. If you have an integration that employs a database and the code is a self managing state engine, it becomes very diffcult to test as moving the cursor re-invokes the entire code and therefore changes state. Now that I know this, I can work with it, but it took almost 2 days to realise that that is what was happening inside a fairly straightforward state manager!!

Cons:

Configuration management is not separeated from deployable project. There is not way to build configs for environments and deploy a channel with the channe lof config or the internal integration config out of the box. You can with careful process and management achive this, but its too open to lazy or bad practise. I did come up with a way to achieve close to what I want though. I imported a config file for a project per environment, each config file tagged with "-DEV" "-PROD" etc to indicate the environment. An import statement (require) is configured to take an environment variable "ENVIRONMENT" set to the appropriate flag for that environment and then the imprt statement imports the config for that environment automatically. It works but it means that DEV and PROD have access to all configs, I'd rather see them separated.

Reasons for choosing Iguana

I did not select Iguana. I'm an independent Health Consultant so I use whatever platform the client has, generally. My most recent other platform is NextGen Connect (Mirth Connect). This platform is much slower for HL7 development but does allow for much more complex / custom integrations due to the availability of Java. If a site is doing Pure HL7, Iguana wins comfortably, if its not health industry I think Iguana would struggle - Though I don't see Iguana looking to the other industries (haven't looked though I must admit)

Review of Iguana

Many of things that were unacceptable in the Iguana 6 have been fixed in Iguana X : lack of GIT proper integration and awfully slow logging system. Especially under heavy load. According to the creators of the Iguana the lua language was chosen as the one which does not have to be updated a lot over long time. Instead they offer updating Iguana. Well done.

Fast pace of writing integration business logic. You can skip all of the programming good practices and make the sales team happy to meet the dates they offered to the customers.

Favorable. I still consider myself a LUA/Iguana beginner even after 18 months of writing interfaces in LUA because there is much to learn but each experience gives me more knowledge.

What I like best is that its not as clunky as cloverleaf :D Im from a programming background so I enjoy the LUA scripting.

Cons:

It would be nice to have more examples of codes in Help. There are examples out there but not examples I tend to need.

Iguana Review

Iguana has allowed us to implement interfaces much faster then we could previously. Interfaceware is forward thinking, making positive changes often in route to an better and easier to use engine.

The best feature for our team is the development and debugging in lua which can be done while you code, allowing for fast development and debugging.

Cons:

The use of Chameleon for creating and editing VMD's.

We liked Iguana's ease of use and doing most everything in one GUI. The development language, LUA, is current and is extremely fast and efficient.

eGate was purchased by Sun, then Oracle and stopped updating the product.

Great Product and Excellent Support

Iguana is an easy to use program that really meets our HL7 needs. The log system within Iguana makes it easy for us to resolve most issues when testing an interface. The support is also exceptional which is critical in this healthcare space.

I like the UI and the log system they have in place. It help me with my efficiency in diagnosing errors an HL7 message. The support is also important to mention because their team is very responsive and quick to assist.

Cons:

I had issues with how it handles SFTP connectivity and the error log not being to clear, but that has been resolved in recent updates.

Extremely easy to use, feature rich, and never errors. It is fantastic to basically click Start and everything just goes

Cons:

It would be nice to have the popular/common connection properties and drivers to be part of the Settings page. Each system is different, but having folders for each Linux system base and selecting the connection method and enter the properties to support the connection would be much easier than managing them externaly
