Universally, financial verification require all applicants to answer basic questions, consent to a credit and background check, provide references, and supply documents to help “prove” their stated income. At a very high level, the current process boils down to asking applicants to self-report critical information, then provide documents and references that can be used to validate it.

To verify self-reported applicant information, leasing, lending and other decision-makers need to manually inspect bank statements/pay stubs, look for red flags on credit/background/eviction reports and research the listed references and contact them (among other tasks). While online applications expedite the process, confirming the accuracy of that information still demands old-fashioned and time-consuming leg work.
