Much More than Just a "Fill in Blanks" Document Automation Platform

We use Gavel extensively to create litigation documents for cases with a large client where the basic fact patterns are very similar with different names, dollar amounts, dates, etc. Using Gavel allows us to litigate smaller cases for our client cost-effectively and to pursue matters they would otherwise have to just write off.

Pros:

While there are a number of legal-focused document automation platforms available, Gavel's ability to allow complex workflows and integrations was key for my practice. Other platforms were either too self-contained or unable to handle the logic we needed to create document effeciently. There's also already a robust marketplace of Gavel workflow creators/consultants who can do the heavy lifting in building out your processes for you at a reasonable price, which makes Gavel a good value for the money. Customer service is excellent, and the [sensitive content hidden] is clearly fully focused on building a great product that continues to innovate and grow with customer's needs and the opportunities afforded by AI.

Cons:

The backend works fine, but isn't quite as polished as it likely will be as it continues to grow its user base. I was also a little frustrated when I built a workflow which was supposed to allow users to upload documents, but had issues with not being able to upload Excel files or larger PDFs.

Reasons for switching to Gavel

Clio Draft obviously plays well with Clio but was too limited in terms of logic, branching and complex form capability.

Its a homerun

It was great. Staff and management very helpful. I have used several platforms and I found this the best one for a small firm like mine. It can save a ton of time (and money) by allowing me to draft my "standard documents: myself and to do it correctly and economically, thus saving me staff time.

Once you learn the basics, it is very EASY to create and use. It is very versatile as well.

Cons:

Not much to criticize really. Would like a document bundle option for putting together series documents, but not a big problem

The quality and ease of deployment, even though it is more expensive, did it for me. I like the ease with which I can use the program for capitalization and such without having to rely on the word macros, which can be tricky and temperamental

Powerful Platform, But Disappointed by Sudden Pricing Change

Gavel offers an excellent no-code solution for automating legal documents. However, we experienced a significant pricing change a few months into our one-year contract, without any notice. Several features we had been actively using were suddenly removed from our plan, and we were informed that regaining access would require upgrading to a significantly more expensive tier—nearly triple the original cost. This was frustrating and impacted our workflow (e.g. we could no longer edit our templates). I hope Gavel improves its customer service in terms of pricing transparency and notice, as the product itself was great.

Once set up, the platform functions smoothly and reliably. While there was a learning curve—as expected with any automation tool—the interface was intuitive enough to navigate with some initial effort. We enjoyed using the product. We also appreciated that the sales team was not overly pushy.

Cons:

Abrupt change in pricing without notice was a significant problem. At first we thought it was an error but unfortunately it was not.

It was slightly more expensive than alternatives like Woodpecker, but we were prepared to invest in what we believed was a premium product.

Reasons for switching to Gavel

We were looking for a cloud-based alternative. Form Tool is a great economical choice, but we were tired of manually inputting data instead of using integrated client questionnaires.

Powerful automation with perfect output and ease of use in setting up. The most powerful no-code / low-code solution on the market by far.

Cons:

For my purposes I have absolutely zero complaints.

WealthDocx & Eldler DocX on a custom software platform. The cost of upkeep in the custom solution was too high and even then it was not as effective as Gavel.

We appreciate the availability of Gavel. Both the standalone Gavel and the Gavel integrated LegalServer are critical programs for our daily use. As both a builder and user, I found Gavel's forms and templates intuitive and easy to create or use.

First is saving staff's time to create/generate forms. Second is collaboration with applicant to obtain information. Third is that customizable forms and templates which expanding the area using Gavel ( we are using Gavel for internal forms not only Legal forms, such as leave request, Mileage reimbursement form etc).

Cons:

Con is that I can't find any cons about Gavel : )

Due to cost and our specific needs, we initially used it on our in-house server. However, since we've transitioned to cloud-based solutions, they no longer offer an option that suits our requirements.

A very powerful and easy to use product. Touted as a no-code product, but the code option is remarkably easy to use in any event - I choose to write my templates by using Gavel's syntax, and I have never used any syntax or programming language before for any purpose. Very sophisticated and powerful template creation enabling the output of very complex documents, or on the other hand the simplest of documents if that's what you want. Links to interviews can be accessed by clients, so they can fill out the forms for immediate document generation for the client, or for initial review by the solicitor.

Cons:

None really. Some requested features have not been introduced, but Gavel are very responsive to customer feedback, and I'm sure desired features will be included in time.

For all the above stated reasons. No other products seemed to have similar features.

Reasons for switching to Gavel

HotDocs too complex for a working solicitor not familiar with code. Support became poor.
