About PhpStorm

PhpStorm is an integrated development environment (IDE) editor that lets developers program, test, debug and complete code for several frameworks including Symfony, Drupal, Laravel, Zend Framework, WordPress, Joomla!, Magento, Yii and CakePHP. It offers a live edit preview functionality, which allows professionals to facilitate debugging sessions by viewing changes made in HTML, CSS, or JavaScript codes in real-time.

Developers can utilize PhpStorm to analyze, refactor, format, re-arrange and autocomplete codes using a smart PHP code editor. It provides an IDE scripting console, which allows professionals to write scripts in the required language and integrate the platform with IntelliJ platform API to build custom IDE or plugins. Additionally, users can create, execute, monitor or terminate tests and visually profile data with Xdebug and Zend debugger.

It offers REST API development, which assists businesses with composing and sending HTTP requests to web services and analyzing the received responses. It is available as an open-source and on monthly and yearly subscriptions.

PhpStorm - The best PHP IDE

We use Phpstorm to code our web applications and it has drastically reduced the time our developers are building web applications and there are fewer programming errors thanks to phpstorm.

Pros:

The syntax highlighting is very good for PHP, HTML and Javascript. The User Interface is friendly and easy use. Keyboard shortcuts are available that speed up development. Phpstorm supports version control which makes going back to commits easy. Further, you can deploy your application to your server right from Phpstorm and integrates well with third party plugins such as Laravel IDE helper and there arelots of plugins from the official plugins repository that can be accessed from the IDE itself. There is also a student pack that gives free licences for a year to students to help them taste the full power of PHPstorm.

Cons:

The price is the only thing that I dont like about PHPstorm.

Pros:

The versatility of PHPStorm is unrivalled, there's so many features that you don't even know you're using that help make day-to-day tasks easier. The ability to customise the appearance is a great bonus, along with being able to customise code structure and formatting so you can auto-format code with a keyboard shortcut, so every file created is formatted exactly the same.

Cons:

Honestly, there's not much I don't like. If I was to be fussy, I'd say there's potentially too many options, but my usage of PHPStorm is quite limited compared to some users, so they will likely benefit from those extra features.It does occasionally cause your system to slow down due to memory hogging, but it is only occasional, I see it as it's telling me to take a break.

Mainly because it was recommended to me. But I had some experience with Dreamweaver, and wanted to try a new program.

I did a contract with an agency where their lead developer suggested it to me, best decision I made.

Excellent PHP-focused IDE

Overall, it was a positive experience, but I ultimately stopped renewing my license because VSCode works better as it allows me to stay within a single IDE for whatever my current development needs may be. If you're for sure only going to be doing PHP and PHP-adjacent languages, I doubt there's a better IDE than PhpStorm.

It made working with PHP and WordPress about as easy as it can be with any IDE. It's nice that PhpStorm is solely for PHP which allows it to be leaner and more focused, versus, say, Eclipse or other jack-of-all-trades IDEs

Cons:

I don't work solely on PHP and while it's easy enough to do JavaScript and other PHP-adjacent languages in PhpStorm, for Rails work, I have to use VSCode.

PhpStorm can be a bit heavy but it fits my needs Perfectly. The best editor I have used.

Love it in every aspect even though it can get sluggish sometimes it never fails. It's the swiss army knife for devs :)

PHPStorm does practically all a developer could think of. - Database Management - Various Languages support - Easy to the eye color theming - The search and replace is so powerful! - Ability to have your terminal right there without having to open yet another app. - Git!!! - So well organized - A+++

Cons:

I have nothing when it comes to cons. This tool is so customizable that any time some feature bothers me I can just switch it off.

The previous editor I used was just not versatile enough and having to add add-ons for every different language made it buggy and caused me downtime and loss of work.

Pros:

In a shortcut, this is the best PHP IDE. Quick updates to various PHP versions. Auto completion help coding much faster and amazing compatibility with most Web coders like GitHub, Laravel framework and Dockers.

Cons:

Price is slightly increasing whenever you renew yearly instead of decreasing.

Perfect IDE for PHP Compatibility Review

Setting up takes time, but once everything is set up, PHPStorm is the perfect all-in-one solution for a developer. Built-in Git version control. Deployment options with code comparison and sync. Automatic code completion is better than other IDEs

The IDE is the perfect all-in-one solution for a developer. The PHP Compatibility check saved our migration projects tons of time and effort. The comparison/sync option when deploying is such a time saver.

Cons:

The application is heavy in terms of memory and disk space usage, but it makes sense considering all the available functionalities.

All in 1 PHP development kit

PhpStorm has save me lot of time setting up multiple softwares for work and run in almost no time and I have not faced any issue with it so far.

All features packed in one software including git, debugger and docker support makes it extremely easy to use and supports a lot for faster development. Availability of different skins and plugins and colour combinations (including High contrast Dark mode) makes it look prettier as well.

Cons:

Lack of shortcuts for features like git pull or muting breakpoints. It lacks a simple interface to assign custom shortcuts.

Expensive but extremely helpful

Having had previous experience with JetBrains IDEs in the past ( PyCharm, IntelliJ) I knew what to expect of it, and wasn't disappointed. It performs extremely well, it integrates with pretty much all the frameworks we needed here (laravel, lighthouse, graphql, docker, etc). Note that the licensing is subscription based (at the moment we started, it was about 9$/month/devel, which scales up pretty fast for large teams

- as with all JetBrains products, you get a nice, clean and extremely powerful interface - again, as with other JetBrains products it has a huge plugin base for all kinds of frameworks, formats and so on. - regularly updated - with the exception of the project loading part, it's extremely fast

Cons:

- kind-of pricey, at least when compared with other tools

Powerful code editor

Daily use for php code editing (html and Javascript inside it) can be used with frameworks or pure. I like the functions and integrations with git and code generators like gets and sets

Pros:

At first you may be scared by so many tools, but with the use you start to enjoy so many features that it offers you. In addition to autocomplete, code generators, hyperlink between functions, it also has amazing integration with git, you can commit, pull and push by the editor itself, as well as being able to resolve conflicts.

Cons:

The price can be a disadvantage, they offer the free version for students, and I think it takes too long to open the program, I usually don't close to avoid this delay to open the first time.

Is it needed when there is free VS Code ?

I started using PHPStorm 2 months ago and as a student I have a full license from the university for free. Overall, the application looks as compact as any other development environment from IntelliJ. If you have used VS Code before, you will be able to orient yourself in PHPStorm within a few minutes. However, I still think it does not offer such an advantage over VS Code, which is free.

Pros:

It's a great software for programming in php. You can very easily connect to a remote server and edit files immediately. You can also connect to your database (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Apache ...) and display tables directly in PHPStorm. If you want to program mainly in php then PHPStorm is definitely the best software for it. If your priority is not PHP and you will also program in another language (HTML, JS, Angular ...) then a free VS Code will suffice.

Cons:

I didn't find anything to bother me. A few times it disconnected me from the SQL database, but it was probably caused only by the failure of the Internet connection.

PHPStorm recommended us a lecturer on the subject of web technology - focused on php.
