StorMagic SvSAN

StorMagic SvSAN fills the gap of VSAN technology after the Broadcom aquisition of VMware. Their product is very cost-effective and can save an organization lots of money on VMware licensing given their new vSAN licensing model.

Pros:

StorMagic SvSAN was very easy to implement in our environment and the support engineer who helped with implementation was top notch. Having a basic understanding of iSCSI will help greatly during the implementation but it is not required as their deployment engineer will guide you through the entire process.

Cons:

The management VM is a standard linux deployment it is not proprietary with built-in lock down functionality like other vendors on the market have with different products. This VM also needs to have automatic updates enabled on it via third-party tools in the CLI if security patching is a requirement in your organization.

The cost of StorMagic was substantially less than VMware vSAN and accomplished the same goal.

svSAN - A secure and effective virtual storage solution for cost reduction today

I like the design of the interface (although it is basic at the moment, I think it has a practical, flexible and easy-to-use design). Another thing I really like is that it has all the fundamental properties to virtualize efficiently.

Cons:

One of the features that we like is that the storage can be directly connected from host-to-host, not only making faster storage connectivity available without needing to factor in the switch cost, it eliminates switch network disruptions from affecting your VMs and datastore. Their customer support is fantastic. The solution is simple and easy to run.

Cons:

If you are looking for a greater than 2-node clusters, then scaling isn't as seamless.

Cost effective alternative instead of VSAN or Storage Spaces

It is a quite fast solution and the speed can compare to much more expensive physical SAN Solutions. And you need less space an cables in your rack.

Cons:

Maybe it is only tradition. But the use on a vSAN in oposite of an physical SAN could maybe less stable in case of desaster. But maybe we need to learn from the furure
