About Google Alerts

Google Alerts is a content change detection and notification service, which sends email alerts to subscribers when the system finds specific search results or mentions of terms across web pages, blogs, newspaper articles, topics and more. The system automatically monitors the content posted across multiple sources and send notifications based on users’ interests.

Google Alerts allows subscribers to configure the frequency of notifications as daily, weekly or monthly. Additionally, users can change settings related to types of websites to search, language preferences, geographical locations, number of results to be displayed and add or remove email accounts for receiving information.

Google Alerts uses indexing capabilities to analyze online content, match specific keywords and store results in a database. The service is available for free and support is extended via an online help center.

Google Alerts keeps me updated with the latest information. Which proves to be useful in my line of work.
    Cons:
The specific words or search terms used and information shared might not be directly related to my area of expertise. The alerts on specific words at times are not directly relevant to the information I am seeking.

    Reasons for choosing Google Alerts

Due to the brand name, Google. I associated the product with being extremely credible and reliable over the others.

For a free product, Google Alerts is an extremely powerful service that has allowed us to boost our productivity significantly. Our Grants team used to miss out on more than a few publications of funding opportunities and grant competitions, but that has not been the case since we started using Google Alerts to fish out keywords related to our grants of interest. It has really helped us.

    Pros:
Google alerts is the simplest business tool to set up, and it comes free of any charges. And one of the features I love most about the service is that the flexibility it gives me in setting up the frequency of alerts and notifications. For less urgent subjects, I am able to avoid the inconvenience or distraction real-time alerts would cause; and for the much more pressing ones, I am able to stay on in sync with developments as they happen.
    Cons:
Given the increased relevance of social media, I think it would be a great addition if Google Alerts were expanded to cover content from major social media platforms as well, since a great majority of interactions happen there.

Reasons for switching to Google Alerts

Ultimately, it come down to the cost comparison of each of the services.

If You're Not Using Google Alerts You're Missing Out

It's great for researching, watching trends and hunting for content ideas, but it can become too much. Finding out what is being said about your own brand anywhere saves a ton of time and allows you to see which industries are aligning with your message or if there's an opportunity to collaborate.

    Pros:
I can set it and forget my alerts for market updates in a variety of industries. Getting all this information would take months to obtain. I can decide if I want to find out more information from the list it provides or not.
    Cons:
There's too many and it can become overwhelming. It is wise to set it up where you get weekly alerts because it can clutter up your inbox really quickly. I haven't seen the option where I can really exactly what I want to see. I would like to see more tailored options for alerts.

    Pros:
It's free, easy, and hassle-free to set up a large number of google alerts of our choice both to track brand mention, topics of interest, and competitors' activities and what're they to. We use them on a daily basis for improving our touchpoints and customer engagement to show our brand in a good light.
    Cons:
We need a lot of manual efforts to churn out the most useful information from the pool of links where topics of our alerts have been mentioned. It provides complete information that may consume a lot of time to hand-pick only useful information.
