Wildnote is Great for Environmental and Cultural Resource Data Collection

Overall, my experience with Wildnote has been exceptional. The software was easy to figure out, and if I did have questions, Wildnote staff were readily available to troubleshoot. I highly recommend this software to anyone that is transitioning to a tablet-based recording system from paper forms.

Pros:

Wildnote's forms are easy to set up and completely customizable for any project. I transferred our Environmental and Cultural Resources paper recording forms to Wildnote, which cut down our paper waste and stored all information for our projects in one, online location. I enjoy the Cloud-based data management as well as the compatibility with different tablets and even smart phones. This makes the software and data easily accessible while traveling for projects.

Cons:

I would love to see some more compatibility and synchronization with ArcCollector and other geospatial recording software.

On our Pro+ package, users have 15 types of exports to choose from, including the geodatabase and geojson file types for easy integration into any ESRI product. We also now directly integrate with the EOS Arrow GNSS Bluetooth receivers so that you can automatically capture highly accurate points right into Wildnote. Additionally, it is on our product roadmap to allow users to load a base map of their choice into the mobile app. We hope these improvements allow our users to have the best of both worlds for forms based data collection and mapping.

User-Friendly Data Collection App

Great, highly recommend. Whenever the platform has bugs, the Wildnote team is extremely responsive and works through patches for you.

Pros:

Platform was very intuitive to learn and easy to use in both mobile device and desktop formats. Data QA/QC, management, and exports were customizable to my needs. Platform is form-based, and I really liked the flexibility of building a form from scratch or altering an existing template and being able to direct my surveyors to exactly what data I need from the question building. The exporting options really sped up my data analysis without having to involve a GIS team.

Cons:

Photo management was pretty minimal, and I still did all of my photo naming/organization outside the app.

Pure Excellence in product and service

Excellent!!!! in one word. However aside from that the cost of the product, the level of service and great customer service from [sensitive content hidden] and the team is phenomenal!!!!! One of the main reasons we switched to Wildnote is that service is almost immediate and not 24-48 hours latter and most importantly handled by a team who is familiar with the type of data we use/collect. Most importantly support is not outsourced to some IT consultant overseas that is hard to understand and doesn't understand what we as customers need or want.

Wildnote is extremely easy to use, has a short learning curve and makes it easy to scale reporting for projects large or one off small projects due to the quick customization. And the Species lists, custom lists and searchability of the lists is hands down the best ive seen in the industry.

Cons:

The only limitation I can find is not having a way to build simple formulas within a form to auto calculate a value dependant on collected field data. Examples may be things like enter an area in Ha and have an acres field auto populate, or when collecting turbidity data in NTUs and have it compare to TSS values and flag compliance exceedances. This could be a very useful one to figure out depending on cost we may want to explore this this winter

Blackhole like tech support, often not solving what we needed fixed. Unclear product limitations, and setup was too technical for non computer people

Good but could be better. I really like the customization aspect and costumer service. There seems to be constant bugs that need fixed, though, and oddities in the app reduce efficiency of data collection and processing.

Wildnote provides users the ability to design project-specific forms in a simple and efficient manner. I also like the web interface for viewing photos and QA/QC completed forms. The Wildnote team is also great at quickly trouble-shooting issues and answering questions. Their customer service is outstanding. Project setup is also pretty straightforward and simple, though making project-specific forms leads to a very large form library that becomes a bear to manage!

Cons:

(1) There is a bit of a learning curve for new users and the Help center is starting to be a bit outdated. We ended up designing an internal manual for help project managers through the project set up process. (2) having to preload location names is a bit annoying and makes it a bit difficult to track what has actually been collected. (3) there always seems to be glitches with updates to the software or devices (iOS/Androids), creating changes in processes; (3) it would be nice to have a "settings" option on various web screens (e.g., projects home page, project data) so that users could add/remove fields to their likening. (4) The pricing starts to get steep at an institutional level. Perhaps their could be some sort of package deal. (5) the conflation of terms "survey" and "form" through the app and web is confusing; recommend just using "form" as survey has other connotations

I liked the fact that project setup and form design/management were very straightforward and simple for users.

Too centralized and not cloud based at the time of the switch (it is now cloud-based and much more affordable)

I personally use Wildnote 2-5 times a week depending on the schedule and status of projects. When our firm started using the app it greatly increased our efficiency for documenting site visits. We have since started using the application for a few different types of inspections and with the Wildnote Support team we have been able to streamline the creation of the survey forms and export final reports for submission.

Wildnote has streamlined our firm's ability to complete field reports while onsite. All of the photos are saved to the Wildnote. The exported reports look professional and are easy customize.

Cons:

I don't have any complaints regarding Wildnote. When we have had issues the support team is extremely helpful in the resolution and occasionally the changes are made to the app.

Reasons for switching to Wildnote

The reports could not easily be completed remotely from phone, and the formatting was a game of patience especially with photos.

Solid wetland form for the field, plus more

Using Wildnote has been a good experience so far. Younger staff embraced it. Older staff have preferred to stick to their old ways, but do like the clean forms Wildnote prints out. We find that having Wildnote helps new wetland scientists learn the delineation procedure without forgetting the steps, and ensures that our delineation forms are complete. It also saves us time back in the office, not having to transcribe our field notes to digital forms.

Wildnote is fairly easy to set up, and is incredibly helpful in the field when doing wetland delineations, especially for people new to wetland work. Having a full list of plant names is invaluable as well. We save so much time on form finalization, simply because most of the form is already done! It also helps us with consistency amongst the staff....we all do the same form the same way now.

Cons:

There's been some issues with the plant lists not being entirely correct (old taxonomy, incorrect wetland indicator statuses for the region, etc), or missing some plants we thought should be there. We've been able to ask for those updates to the plant lists, and Wildnote has been very responsive. Similarly, we have a super hard time finding and selecting Gley soil colors.

Wildnote is also able to be adapted for other forms, not just wetland forms. That was a big factor.

A solid app with a bright future

Overall Wildnote is a good project that could be used in both the private and academic industry though it is still in it's infancy and that can be apparent at times.

Wildnote makes monitoring and surveying for not just wildlife but multiple scientific factors related to a project easy and customizable.

Cons:

The coding of the survey can often be clunky and unreliable leading to issues with saving data, desired form outputs, and other issues related to backend coding issues that will need to be reported. Though the Wildnote team is quick to respond and easy to work with.
