About RIB SpecLink

SpecLink is a construction specification software designed to help businesses enhance the specification process at every stage of the construction lifecycle. Key features include document management, master specification content, WYSIWYG editor, choice lists, and intelligent links.

Teams using SpecLink can automatically convert Revit files into VIM (Virtual Information Modeling) files through Unity 3D gaming technology. The virtual models allow managers to isolate individual layers or objects within the model, view information embedded in the BIM objects, and highlight BIM objects on-screen. Additionally, the platform enables users to compare changes against previous versions to identify additions or the latest changes to the model.

SpecLink lets teams synchronize BIM models and specs to facilitate coordination and identify potential conflicts. Pricing is available on annual subscription and support is extended via live chat, phone, email, and online inquiry form.

    Pros:
All our specs are in one place. Must quicker to turn sections on and off than retyping entire spec sections. Allows for standardized specs across the firm.
    Cons:
It can be a little unintuitive on what exactly you are turning on and off. I also would like to see some sort of reference function where turning off something in part 1 also turns it off in 2 and 3.

    SpecLink for a sole practitioner

Overall, implementing SpecLink has been a timesaver. It is easy to use, powerful, and works better than its competition. Their customer service is very good, and they are very helpful with onboarding. They listen to their users, and they are actively updating and improving the platform.

    Pros:
It is easy to get up and running on SpecLink. The interface is fast, and editing is efficient. Content is updated regularly, and the updates can easily be applied to projects in process. It is not hard to edit their masters to create your own master. Thier content is not the same as the MasterSpec licensed from AIA, and it is less verbose. In most cases I have found that it covers the same content more efficiently.
    Cons:
It would be nice to have the option to license the AIA MasterSpec content and use the RIB interface, but it's not practical at this time. Importing outside master sections into SpecLink is challenging. Each section needs to be tagged and labeled just so, and it's necessary to carefully check the imported section to make sure that choices and content are showing up as intended. They are working on making the process better, but it is still challenging. Importing consultant sections for printing a project manual is also challenging, so I use a different product to assemble project manuals. As a cloud-based system, there is little capability to edit specs when offline. There is a lot of as-yet-untapped potential in this product to better leverage the tagging and crosslinking capabilities. For instance, specifying sustainability requirements, coordinating sections that are cross-referenced, and marking sections with a percentage of completion. I hope to see them develop these capabilities soon.

Reasons for switching to RIB SpecLink

Deltek stopped developing their outdated Word interface and rolled out a web interface that doesn't work well. It doesn't have the necessary ease of use, speed, flexibility, and function.

Overall it's good, but every now and then it really lags and I'm constantly needing to refresh the page to try to get it to speed up. As mentioned above, the formatting abilities could really use work to bring it back up to Speclink-E quality and customization. Obviously, Speclink is much better than Word documents or otherwise, but it still causes headaches.

    Pros:
It's great to have the ability to bulk format and keep master specs; linking throughout and overall speediness as compared to Speclink-E is a big improvement.
    Cons:
The header/footer function is a big downgrade from how it was in Speclink-E. Lately there are bugs with the software missing edits, missing choices, causing errors and typos that are not user-error. Tables are also a downgrade from Speclink-E. No ability to bulk print all-text drafts.

    Vendor Response

Thank you, Laura, for your honest and detailed feedback. We’re glad to hear that you appreciate the improvements in linking, speed, and bulk formatting over SpecLink-E, and that SpecLink continues to offer a better experience than Word-based specs. Cons:
The formatting is slightly limited, particularly for exporting numbered-line style specs in lieu of Masterformat specs. It's not a deal breaker, and can be worked around, though

Reasons for switching to RIB SpecLink

We actually migrated from Deltek Specpoint, but that wasn't an option on the list. We moved due to improved customer service, cleaner master specifications, simpler to use.

SpecLink has improved the quality of my specifications.

As a former Word user, SpecLink is far, far better. I would not go back. I can write specs more efficiently. I can spend more time developing quality specifications than I would in Word having to deal with formatting and headers and footers. SpecLink does that in one simple step. Plus nothing is 'lost' as it would be in Word if something is deleted. The turn-on, turn-off keeps everything in the spec always.

Still working though it.

Availability of up-to-date specs that can be coordinated with all disciplines. Edits that can be undone if the specs are used for other projects when some aspects not applicable to one project are applicable on another. We typically do a lot of copy/paste between similar projects and this can be invaluable.
    Cons:
I am not sure if it is a permissions issues but some specifications are not accessible for use with a project. Additionally, if you are working in more specialized projects, not all applicable specifications are available. For example, specification that cover piping for particular gas systems (hydrogen).
