About SketchUp

SketchUp is a 3D modeling software that is designed for businesses in several industry segments, including architecture, construction, urban planning, woodworking and interior designing. It enables designers to create, store and automatically convert 3D models into 2D designs. The software offers a user-friendly interface and was specifically designed to work for both beginners and professionals, offering both 2D and 3D designing tools.

SketchUp allows staff members to provide potential clients with virtual reality (VR) based walkthrough videos via external tools, such as Oculus, Microsoft HoloLens and HTC Vive. With the built-in drawing tools, employees can create draw, extrude, move, combine, isolate and subtract complex 3D geometrical shapes. Additionally, it enables staff members to create 2D drawings, add annotations, define dimensions and include comments to provide interior designers, contractors and builders design contexts and requirements.

SketchUp comes with an application programming interface (API), which allows businesses to integrate the platform with several third-party solutions. It is available on annual subscriptions and support is extended via documentation,...

Best modelling software, for amateurs and pros!

5

SketchUp is so easy to use that once you’ve tried it, it will be hard to move onto other programs. It’s intuitive, it has a very open library where you can find almost any plugin to do almost anything you need.

Pros:
There is no other software as intuitive as SketchUp. Modeling in its interface feels just right, and it’s really ease to generate simple or very complex models and to produce great information with it. I just love it.
Cons:
Although it has is tools for layer management, they are not as easy to use as in AutoCAD, Photoshop or almost any other graphic software. They could really improve on this to make it the best tool ever.

Reasons for switching to SketchUp

3ds Max is just so hard to use and although it is an Autodesk integrated software, its hardly friendly user experience stops you from really freeing your imagination.

Powerful Concept Tool

5

I have used SketchUp in many projects for past companies - primarily early concept design, such as taking ideas and business proposals and giving it a hint of real life to be able to show stakeholders what the finished project could look like.

Pros:
The fact there is a free version, which although limited compared with the paid version, it is a very powerful tool for early concept design for architecture or building development that can turn ideas into real.
Cons:
At core SketchUp is a very simple CAD software - it is difficult to get real precision from SketchUp, and at times the tools feel more clunky to use than dedicated CAD software.

Reasons for switching to SketchUp

3DS Max was good for world design and rendering, but took too long where the detail was just not required. Many concept designs needed to be done quick and high specific detail was not required.

Sketchup for an interior designer.

5

I am a interior designer. And any interior designer today would know the value and importance of sketchup in their worklife. 3d modelling is one of the most crucial part in interior designing without it its very hard to imagine our design in real life. Thats when sketchup comes as a saviour. Me and my team we use this software in regular basis for client presentation, to get 3d renders and also to get 2d drawings for execution in the site. Learning this software has been our greatest asset and one of the most useful skills.

Pros:
1. It is a very efficient tool that me and my team use for 3d modelling in our interior design firm. 2. 3d Models from sketchup can be imported into Autocad to create 2d drawings such as elevation, saving our lot of time. 3. The 3d warehouse has extensive variety of items, that can be downloaded and further customised. 4. Plugins available make it very interesting, fun and increases efficiency while also providing a shortcut method to work. 5. The plugin compatibility with rendering softwares like Vray and Enscape makes it very easy to do live updates and see the test render before producing final.
Cons:
1. It usually lags or slow downs while modelling when the file gets heavy. 2. Sudden crashing of the file while doing complex modelling. 3. It requires internet connection while I opt to do some changes in the model.

Complete software for use in architecture

5

Initially, the software was a complement to technical drawing in civil construction, but more recent versions have introduced new features that bring customization, technical precision, and improved graphical representation. This allows the program to be used throughout the entire lifecycle of an architectural project, from conception to delivery. Furthermore, it has many users worldwide, making it easy to share information, experience, and files.

Pros:
Extremely easy to use for routine modeling in architectural office and essential for quick volumetric studies. The 3D Warehouse library is comprehensive and diverse in materials and components.
Cons:
The program easily becomes cumbersome with larger projects and crashes unexpectedly. The developer's rendering extensions still need significant development to avoid the need for additional support in more formal projects.

Easy and Intuitive

I used SketchUp a lot when I was in school and have used it quite a bit since then as well. It is super user friendly as it is both intuitive to use and has a lot of features. It is a great program and a great way to get into architectural design, especially the free version of the program.

Cons:
Honestly I don't have anything negative to say about SketchUp. My biggest grievance is that the free version restricts certain features but that can be easily rectified buy purchasing the paid version which does everything you could want it to.

The rendering quality isn’t the best unless you use plugins, and for more detailed or complex projects, it sometimes feels limited compared to other software.
