About Navisworks

Autodesk Navisworks is a project review software designed to improve coordination, collaboration, and construction planning across various industries, including architecture, engineering, and construction. The software allows users to integrate and review 3D models, facilitating better project outcomes through enhanced visualization, clash detection, and simulation capabilities. Navisworks is particularly useful for large-scale projects that require meticulous planning and coordination among multiple stakeholders.
One of the key features of Autodesk Navisworks is its comprehensive model aggregation capability. The software supports a wide range of file formats, enabling users to combine 3D models and data from various sources into a single, unified project model. This aggregation allows for a holistic view of the project, making it easier to identify potential issues and ensure that all components fit together seamlessly. Additionally, Navisworks provides tools for model navigation and exploration, allowing users to interact with the aggregated model in a detailed and intuitive manner.
Clash detection and interference management are critical features of Navisworks. The software use...

s advanced algorithms to identify and highlight clashes and interferences between different elements of the project model. This functionality helps project teams detect and resolve issues before construction begins, reducing the risk of costly rework and delays. Additionally, Navisworks allows users to generate clash reports and track the resolution of identified issues, ensuring that all conflicts are addressed in a timely manner. Navisworks also offers robust simulation and animation tools. Users can create 4D simulations that link project models to construction schedules, providing a visual representation of the project timeline. This capability helps stakeholders understand the sequence of construction activities and assess the impact of schedule changes. Additionally, Navisworks supports the creation of animations and walkthroughs, enabling users to present project plans and designs in a compelling and easily understandable format. The software includes a suite of measurement and quantification tools. Users can take precise measurements directly from the 3D model, ensuring accuracy in material estimates and project planning. Navisworks also supports the creation of quantification workbooks, which can be used to generate detailed material takeoffs and cost estimates. Additionally, the software's measurement tools are integrated with its clash detection and simulation features, providing a comprehensive solution for project planning and coordination. Navisworks supports integration with other Autodesk products and third-party applications. The software is compatible with Autodesk's BIM 360 platform, allowing users to collaborate on projects in a cloud-based environment. This integration facilitates real-time data sharing and collaboration among project teams, enhancing overall project efficiency. Additionally, Navisworks' API allows for custom integrations with other software tools, enabling organizations to tailor the platform to their specific needs. The technical specifications of Navisworks include support for high-performance rendering and visualization. The software leverages advanced graphics processing capabilities to deliver detailed and realistic visualizations of project models. This high level of detail is essential for identifying potential issues and ensuring that project designs meet the required standards. Additionally, Navisworks supports multi-core processing, enabling it to handle large and complex models efficiently.

    Navisworks - 3D Design

    5

I recently began working on a project with an engineering firm who uses Navisworks to create 3D models. I have been using AutoCAD by AutoDesk for well over 10 years now, so I am very familiar with the layout of that system, which carries over into Navisworks and therefore helped me pick up Navisworks very quickly.

    Pros:
If you are familiar with the layout of other AutoDesk products, picking up Navisworks should be straightforward to you as they are structured very similarly to one another.
    Cons:
I have only just recently began using Navisworks, but so far the only thing I don't really care for about Navisworks is that it creates files of a native filetype of which I have not found to be compatible in other 3D software.

I have used it to make view and coordinate the subs (Plumbing, Electrical, Mech, Sprinklers) in their different elements. It is pretty much the standard software so I do not have to bend arms to use this software but it is costly for the license, especially if you want all the bells and whistles like layering. It does translate revit models well.

    Pros:
It is the software that most coordinators use for MEP coordination. There is a specialty that all MEP subcontractors have to coordinate their elements in a building information model (BIM) to avoid conflicts in the field. Navis is the preferred software for this use. It makes it easier to have all the different subs interface knowing that they are using the same software.
    Cons:
It is a bit difficult to use in that it is one of those skills where you use it or lose it. This software is not intuitive and you have to continually use it in order to maintain your skills. It is also constantly upgrading the software so that if you are not using it on a daily basis, you will not be fully conversant in Navis.
