About HashiCorp Consul

Consul is a service networking software designed to help businesses secure network traffic and discover services across public or private cloud and any runtime platform. Key features include server monitoring, network diagnosis, IP address monitoring, policy management, network resource management and device auto-discovery.

Teams using Consul can connect services to each other through sidecar proxies that can be deployed locally with each service instance. With Kubernetes, users can deploy two services using the platform, discover each other and communicate over TLS via Consul Connect. Additionally, it offers NGINX templates that can be configured according to the latest list of backend servers in order to automate load balancing.

Consul facilitates integration with various third-party applications, such as Google Cloud Platform, VMware, Vault, SPIFFE, Envoy, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and more. Pricing is available across three offerings: open source, enterprise platform and enterprise modules. Support is extended via documentation, FAQs, email and an inquiry form.

    Pros:
I've used consul in the past to migrate from LoadBalancers to NGINX and the console made it easy to list all services and backend ports. By creating templates we use it to get dynamic inventories for Ansible instead of static addresses.
    Cons:
Not a complain at all but some clients have ticketing systems like ServiceNow and will be nice to have integration from Consul discovery to the ServiceNow CMDB

    Pros:
Once the setup and configuration is done, by adding a few labels to your deployments you have service discovery fully implemented.
    Cons:
Complexity, and sometimes there's some network-related setup that is not easy to detect that will make Consul to not work properly, and in such cases it is very difficult to determine the root cause

    Reasons for choosing HashiCorp Consul

At the moment of implementing Service Discovery, it was the best solution for an on-premises setup. Plus being users of different Hashicorp products, the integration between those services is seamless.
