About Avalara

Avalara is a fixed asset accounting solution designed to help businesses in the eCommerce, IT, manufacturing and other sectors calculate tax rates and automate sales. The platform enables administrators to verify purchase addresses and file tax returns.

Avalara allows teams to manage tax exemption certificates and other compliance documents on a unified interface. Additionally, managers can generate reports to ensure tax rates and ensure compliance.

Avalara lets businesses integrate the system with several third-party applications including Acumatica Cloud ERP, BigCommerce, Drupal, NetSuite and PrestaShop. Pricing is available on request and support is extended via knowledge base, phone, live chat and email.

    Overall, it has been a good product, with great customer support. They have excellent professional advisors to navigate the world of sales tax compliance, and the system is very easy to use for users of any experience level.

    It is an easy to use tool that integrates seamlessly with other accounting systems to help manage sales tax. It gives me confidence that we are staying compliant without having to review every single transaction as they occur. It is very low cost for the amount of value that is provided.
    Cons:
    The communication can be off base sometimes. There can be several false positives of sales tax nexus that you are alerted to that I haven't quite found a way to configure.

    Great Resource and Saves Time

    Overall, it have been good. There isn't any other software that does what they do as good as them. The TTRUS is the best and an amazing resource. I just think the support is lacking a little to get a straight answer on more difficult questions.

    They file the returns for you. Saves lots of time to focus on more analysis. Upload tool is easy to use.
    Cons:
    With Louisiana being a difficult state and where we do most business, they don't have many experts in this area especially with Direct Pay Permits and creating Entity Use Codes especially when new jurisdictions are added. There are alot of reports that do about the same thing just maybe a little tweek so sometimes trying to find the right one is hard.

    Great product...poor performance in QBO

    Support has been mediocre. The current issue is on it's 4th month with no anticipated resolution timeframe. In the meantime my client is paying me to manually enter these and reconcile Avalara to ensure that the system reports the proper totals as well as to educate their support team. I feel bad that they are paying a lot of money for a product that is not functional...to my knowledge, all of my requests to get them a credit for their inconvenience and the product issues have been ignored. As the title states, a great product "in theory", but it needs to work! Sales Tax is nothing to screw around with.

    Avalara has a great concept if it works as designed. Auto-calculates sales tax based on address, ensures updated tax rates, filing assistance for multiple states...it really is a business owners friend...in theory.
    Cons:
    Unfortunately, Avalara does not work well with QBO. There seem to be many bugs experienced with QBO. We have used Avalara with QBO for over 1yr and seem to be their guinea pig to alert them of issues. Currently, Avalara's connection is preventing us from saving and updating invoices in QBO and is not posting tax to the Avatax console for approx. 50% of our $2mil/mo client. We have to manually enter each invoice into Avatax to ensure that the proper taxes are paid. Unfortunately, if we need to update a class, memo, email address or any other aspect of the invoice (not related to ST) we cannot update those 50% of transactions. After support reviewed the issues multiple times, they tried to blame the issue on QBO. But when we disconnect the QBO from Avalara and try to do the same transaction - it works...so Intuit has confirmed the issue is isolated to

    Avalara Tax Software Great- Avalara Support Not So Much

    Assuming you have no issues or questions, the functionality and automation of the sales tax calculation, tax filing and tracking of customer tax exemptions are fantastic, especially if you can integrate Avalara with your ERP system.

    Avalara easily handles all the sales tax calculations for transactions, and is especially great since it integrates with our ERP system. It saves time in that it is able to automatically identify customers who have tax exemption certificates on file and processes transactions based on valid Tax Exemption Certificates on file that are valid. Avalara processes tax filings and has reporting capability allowing for easily identifying issues with transactions, summarizing monthly sales tax liabilities and managing customers.
    Cons:
    Avalara support and customer interactions is lacking. It appears that that did a lot of investment in their product, but failed to identify the need for actual interaction with customers when they need help. Avalara requires you to use their AI support and knowledge base articles to solve problems, before you can speak to someone about your issue. Their Account Reps appear also, to not have the time to provide communication to their customers, since it is difficult to get an answer timely to questions.

    Reasons for switching to Avalara

    Prophet 21 sales tax calculation utility was very administrative heavy, requiring manual updates to tax rates, and was not specific to city, county and state taxes. At best Prophet 21 was a rough estimate of taxes.

    Quality APIs for sales tax processing and a good support team - when you can reach them.

    Use them for sales tax transaction processing - the calculation and overall NEXUS calculations. They helped get us setup and gave a bit more hand-holding then we expected which was good.

    Transitioned all our state sales tax calculation processing over to Avalara and have been impressed with their customer service team and the calculation APIs.
    Cons:
    Our account manager changed multiple times in the first few months and has since stabilized. Getting support to respond to tickets was also slow at first. Both have improved.

    For the cost and reputation Avalara carries, I expected professionalism and accountability, but experienced neither. Proceed with extreme caution if you rely on them for your business.

    Not much to say here. The idea of it is great, however, execution is lacking. If they could sharpen up their internal processes and filing procedures, I would have much better things to say.
    Cons:
    Poor communication, lack of accountability, and overall not providing the true service you pay for. Their entire purpose is to file tax returns accurately and compliantly, yet our filings were submitted incorrectly and non-compliant. When I raised the issue, the team refused to take responsibility or offer a resolution. I have spoken with many state sales and use tax representatives who also spoke negatively of their own experience with Avalara.

    Avoid unless you like constant trouble

    Its been a complete and total disappointment. I am absolutely livid with the disaster they have created for our business. They put all the work on me and handle nothing. Completely incompetent and horrible communicators

    A Once it was set up it ran well, until it didn't. It seemed to do the job for the short time that it was running correctly
    Cons:
    Complete disaster for us. Onboarding was a disaster. The expert they gave us had no experience. I had to figure it out and set it up. Then they disconnected the App that integrated with eComm and then never fixed anything. Completely incompetent staff. Indian that had no understanding of anything and very difficult to talk to.

    Really poor, I can't imagine it can get any worse than this so pick anything else for your sales tax software.

    No pros in using this service it's all horrible and there's precisely 0 things I liked about working with them.
    Cons:
    Horrible customer support, full of unqualified offshore workers. They take your money and run (don't do their job) until they ask for more money to upgrade you to a higher tier to do more of a job they haven't done in the past.

    Think twice before purchasing

    After evaluation of several tax support packages, we chose Avalara due to its' ability to cover multiple states. We purchased the software and registration services for 14 states and was told they would handle registration and all I had to do was a simple set up for reporting for each state. Nothing about this process was simple and after 3 months we are partially working. The registration process that we paid for, 50% of the work had to be completed or reworked by my company. The only way I knew it was incomplete was because when setting up the reporting with most all states, you have to call the tax division directly and wait on hold for hours to complete this task for each state. During that process I was told the registration was not complete so the task of registration fell on us. I have requested a refund for the services purchased and the response was, “Log a support case.” There is little to no support. I continually went back the [sensitive content hidden] to get help from his side to complete this, but he was of very little help and pushed me off to again, log a support case. To date I probably have 10+ support cases zero of which have given me a solution to my problems. From a software/technical standpoint the software was withdrawing money from my bank account for taxes in a state we were not collecting taxes in. I still have not gotten our money back, and they closed the support case. They did however admit there was a technical issue with this problem and that support case is still open.

    There is absolutely nothing this software has done for our business except waste time integrating it.
    Cons:
    Integration, Avalara claiming to have set up all registrations, support cases being closed before a resolution is provided, and Software taking money out of the company to cover taxes in a state we are not collecting taxes in. This is just in month 3.

    They charged 2,000% more for upgrading our transaction level with no pricing alert.
