A capable, premium professional tax software

We have a strong love/hate relationship with Lacerte, it’s painful to pay the high cost but we are very familiar with the product and it is very capable overall. Basically Intuit has us right where they want us as competitor products are priced similarly and so there is no meaningful incentive to switch software.

Pros:

I have been using Lacerte for 18 years and so I am extremely efficient in using it. It allows us to prepare a high volume of returns with minimal fuss, and the diagnostic checks are good at catching oversights and errors. The printed return forms, statements, client letters, etc look professional and polished.

Cons:

It is costly, and goes up each year, although competitor products with similar capabilities charge similar prices . Also, if you stop paying for new software you can’t efile returns for past years that you did already pay for. All significant improvements to the workflow or product capabilities are sold separately as an add on, further increasing the cost. Support is very slow. It frequently takes 30-45 minutes to talk to someone. For a product with premium pricing this is absolute garbage.

Reasons for choosing Lacerte Tax

Familiarity with the input scheme and capabilities. For ultratax the cost would not be significantly lower and we would lose too much productivity while learning a new software. For ProConnect Tax it would be more expensive since it is pay per return only.

Support essentially nonexistent

Extremely disappointing. I pay a very premium price and I get nothing but very substandard support when a complex issue is encounter. I am completely on my own with no support from Lacerte for which I pay a lot of money for.

Pros:

It prepares basic returns accurately. Here are more words to meet the one hundred word minimum requirement.

Cons:

It is super expensive. Fine. The real problem is that when there is a complex support issue, you can only get a very inexperienced, junior agent who cannot solve the problem. I have been a customer for 30 years and have essentially given up on calling for support because it is a complete waste of time. I wish I had selected a product that would provide real customer service.

Terrrible Support

We're done. Tech support can't do anything and the Lacerte tool hub if broken. Support says they are working on it but its been years since its worked.

We've been a Lacerte customer for 30+ years. Software has been the easiest to use of the big tax software names.

Cons:

Support has tanked this year. The Lacerte database has corrupted many individual files and tech support says there is nothing they can do and aren't allowed to escalate the issue. This happened last year and they were able to resolve the issue after escalating it to another team

This is the best software for a thoughtful tax professional

I don't think there is a better option for tax professionals who also plan and provide services to business and non-profits

Pros:

This software is better than others near this price range because it has logical and simple input options, and form views, and also provides notes and better diagnostics for accuracy. I also really like its customization options and integration.

Cons:

Intuit. I really just in general dislike them. They're not as bad as Thompson Reuters but are a close 2nd. Any good software that comes on the market they buy up and ridiculously inflate the price. They also hook you with low-price options and trials and then double the price once you're invested.

Reasons for switching to Lacerte Tax

TR was way over priced, drake was basic and it's UI was very archaic, mytaxprepoffice I love the UI but the forms never flowed to the right spots correctly and there were always very costly and time consuming mistakes

Pros:

I like that it handles a wide range of tax types (individuals, corporate, partnerships, etc.) and its built in diagnostics/validations that helps reduce errors before filing.

Cons:

The customer service can be inconsistent with the help that they provide. Also, I appreciate the frequent updates but at times it can interrupt workflow especially during tax season when firms are trying to push out high volumes of tax returns.

Lacerte ... for the long haul

I work with several different software programs each year (ProSeries, Lacerte, TaxAct) and would choose Lacerte over all of them. The few things that Lacerte does much better than the others is the state integration, K-1 export/import and Kiddie tax integration (no separate input needed). The K-1 auto export/import is amazing.

Lacerte does very few changes each year (outside of tax calculations). You can depend on not needing to relearn how to use the product, rely on features, rely on consistent accuracy. This is the best product on the market and the increase in price is worth every penny.

Cons:

Customization of cover letters, organizers, engagement letters is limited. Works well, just limited.

Lacerte Tax User Review

My overall experience with Lacerte Tax is that it is very efficient and user friendly. I started using Lacerte as a recent college graduate, and I caught on very quickly to how all of the input screens work. It is also very helpful with all of the diagnostics it provides. This helps you ensure that you are providing accurate information to the IRS.

Pros:

Lacerte Tax is very user friendly and even easy to use for recent college graduates. I feel like this is very important when you are just learning how to file tax returns. All of the input screens are laid out well as well. One of my favorite features of Lacerte Tax is the diagnostics feature that provides information about things that could be incorrect & also about tax laws, etc. This helps you know that you are filing each tax return as correctly as possible.

Cons:

My biggest complaint with Lacerte Tax would be all of the updates that it requires & the glitches that happen if not updated when each update is available. However, I realize that these updates are just to ensure that the system is up to date with tax laws, etc.
