About Clever Cloud

Clever Cloud is a Platform as a Service solution, which helps businesses streamline operations using various runtimes and APIs. Key features include application management, database migration, application scaling, domain names, and deployment hooks.

Teams using Clever Cloud can deploy scalers for applications and fine-tune applications' scalability by managing both vertical and horizontal scaling. It lets managers migrate any database to the cloud, and link domain names in the console. Additionally, users can encrypt their data at rest to protect data from security threats.

Clever Cloud allows supervisors to track every incoming HTTP request with access logs. Pricing is based on the runtimes, databases, containers, storage, and messaging and support is extended via documentation and FAQs.

Perfect solution for PaaS with a good human support when needed

What we also like is the auto-scaling featuer. We are conferences's organizer. During our events we need maybe 4 active servers, to host and to server between 5000 to 10,000 attendees. But once the tradeshow is over, we don't need such power in term of CPU/Memory. Clever-cloud has a native auto-scaling system that save a lot of cash. You pay only for what you consume.

Pros:

Clever-cloud is a simple platform as a service solution we've been using for the Devoxx conferences since 2016. We deploy Java and Scala backend applications, with postgreSQL, Redis and Elasticsearch add-ons. The solution is very simple (basically, you do a git push to Clever-cloud and voilà). The tooling is good (you can use a CLI to deploy from your localhost or to fetch logs). What I like the most about Clevercloud is the Support team. They are always helpful and they can help you when you need.

Cons:

It's not a Container as a Service solution. You can deploy a Docker container (we did that for Keycloak), but it's not the most natural approach with Clever-cloud

- Price - Hosting in Europe that is compliant with GDPR - Cheaper than Heroku

Reasons for switching to Clever Cloud

- Price - It's almost impossible to compute your monthly invoice with AWS, there's always "surprises" - I don't have a dedicated DevOps team and I prefer a solution that just take my code and deploy it

The ease of deployment process among the quality of the documentation.

Cons:

I miss some ways to deployment software in 'dev' envrionement, espacially for PHP. I would like to be able to configure my deployment for a target environement (prod, dev, test ...). The main bottleneck for PHP is that by default the deployment process install Composer dependancies without the flag --dev. It could be useful to configure it through an ENV var in the console

Pros:

Super easy integration and setup: deploying multiple applications with a database is really quick and the documentation is helpful and up-to-date. Also, vertical and horizontal scaling is very easy to configure and you'll pay only what you've used.

Cons:

The database pricing which is separated from the credits: I would like to pay only for credits, and that the database, which is invoiced each month, use my credits to be paid. It would avoid me multiple transactions, especially when using a currency that is not Euro.

Clever Cloud enables fast deployment via predictable monitoring and scaling although unusual latency surges when horizontally scaling should be optimized.

The easiest PaaS I have used so far to deploy application.(and by app I mean any app and/or language) You can easily configure everything from the console UI, but there is also a solid CLI for your ci/cd process. Great pricing and world class support.

Cons:

I miss a solid metrics dashboard and a more easy to use log inspector.
