PowerSchool: Nice Interface and Easy to Use Features

    5

Overall, PowerSchool offers an easy to navigate attendance and grading system for schools. They have done a nice job with the layout in that most things are easy to find and where you would be expected to find them. There are many customizations available at the district level, so successful implementation will also be dependent on your district set up and ensuring that they are getting input from the appropriate stakeholders.

    Pros:
My school district switched over to PowerSchool about a year and a half ago. I now use it for grades, attendance, lunch counts, reports, and many other things. What I like most about PowerSchool is the interface. As a teacher, when I log in, the initial screen shows the things I use on a daily basis- attendance, lunch count, and contact information. I like that it is set up in a way that the things I use the most are right there. There is then an additional menu called "Power Teacher Pro" that is used for things like grade entries and reports that I might use more on a monthly basis. The report options offer lots of different variables and allows the user to create PDF, excel, and other types of files. Having these different options has been helpful.
    Cons:
The user experience has been a positive one for me. However, the initial training we received could use some improvement. The training modules are fairly dry to sit through and can be confusing to navigate.

    Reasons for switching to PowerSchool

It was determined that PowerSchool would match up better with our Learning Management System- Schoology.

    Pros:
You can see your grades at a glance and this is really convenient for students. You can make submissions through Google Drive without relinquishing your ownership of the document like Google Classroom does (I understand the premise of that strategy, but it's majorly inconvenient).
    Cons:
Unlike in Canvas, you can't test what kind of grades you'll need on weighted assignments to maintain a certain overall grade. The UI/UX are also designed kind of poorly and my school frequently gets errors saying that PowerSchool is undergoing development. I never get those messages from Canvas. It's also extremely frustrating that I can't submit documents from Google Drive if they're in a Team Drive, whether or not they're owned by me.

    Awful platform

it won’t save any of my data to apply for a career. It times out, refreshes page and everything is gone that I spent 45 minutes entering in.

    Pros:
None. First experience with it is from a school district that just adopted this platform. I’m using it to apply for a position in Tucson unified school district. I tried to apply through this platform and each time it’s has a different problem, but the end result is always that my data is erased. When I called my district HR, they said several people have complained of this problem. Yet when they give me the number for the platform/website/program, no one answers the phone. The chat is just as useless. It said it was transferring me to an engineer and then timed out. There are tons of pop-up ads when I’m trying to apply for a job. The ads cover the content that I need to see. As soon as I exit out of an ad, Another pops up. Many times I inadvertently I’m trying to exit the ad and I click to exit and it takes me to the AD page! The website also overheated my laptop today. It hasn’t the other five times I’ve tried to apply. Please fix your software program!!
    Cons:
The support chat is useless as it’s kind of answer question. It asked more questions of you than it is helpful to respond to you. No one answered the phone number given to me by my districts HR dept. No one has responded to my email. I’m told I’m not the only one that has had the problem of the platform, not saving the data and wiping out everything you’ve inputted if it refreshes or times you out. It’s frustrating enough that it is required to do the whole application in one sitting. Today I was almost done with it for the seventh time and it had trouble uploading my résumé. So it refresh the page and I lost everything I had input so far. And I had saved after every page.

    Pros:
It gets the job done and the new updates make everything more streamlined in terms of accessing information and utilizing it to build classes.
    Cons:
Setting up bins gets clunky--there's an expectation that teachers completely understand the math that Powerschool uses with percentages vs. numerical values, that we don't all have mastery of, right away. It would be nicer if we could just pick it up and go, rather than refer to a manual.
