About Drupal Commerce

Drupal Commerce is an open-source eCommerce platform that lets you sell any type of product to anyone in the world. It powers billions in sales across tens of thousands of online stores.

Choosing Drupal Commerce is a classic "build vs. buy" decision. While some merchants are perfectly happy with off the shelf solutions from our SaaS competitors, others value or even require the ability to fully customize the underlying data model, checkout interface, or back-office management interfaces. If you have complex product data entry requirements, custom order properties you need to manage, or multiple customer types or sales channels, you will almost certainly benefit from the level of control Drupal Commerce affords you. Furthermore, you can design the exact customer experience you want, starting with the platform's default interfaces and adding custom fields, submission workflows, or front-end components to truly tailor the purchase experience to your business.

The Drupal Commerce extension ecosystem includes thousands of pre-built modules, but the platform excels at enabling individual merchants to integrate targeted customizations into their own codebase that meet their exact speci...

fications. Furthermore, the platform assumes you will need to adapt to changing requirements over the life of your store. With Drupal Commerce, you are never constrained by the vendor's roadmap. Many of our merchants launch with default features and then tailor them over time or even replace them completely with third party tools as they grow. Drupal Commerce is building the future of commerce without compromise. Our merchants the world over go to market on their own terms, unconstrained by their commerce platform and empowered to do what’s right by their customers. We know that means something different to everyone, but we're happy to prepare a demo tailored to your business to show you our best features for product marketing, custom search interfaces, B2B buyers, order management, internationalization, and more.

    Pros:
Intuitive interface and powerful features make it my go-to solution for creating a robust e-commerce platform. Also, for corporates, it is a good solution in security and compliance. Great avaiable resources in terms of developers, documentation, already developed addons and so on.
    Cons:
Although the product offers a range of features, I found that some modules didn't work as expected.

    Cons:
Fewer third-party modules are available, as Drupal Commerce is not as widely adopted as some of the more popular ready-made solutions.

Reasons for switching to Drupal Commerce

Drupal Commerce inherits the power of the high-performance Drupal CMS, allowing you to manage orders and content within a single interface.

    Pros:
Drupal Commerce is a go-to choice when it comes to building a custom eCommerce site on Drupal. It's highly flexible and is well used so it can be extended almost endlessly
    Cons:
It is a bear to configure. You have to be a developer with experience to get it working smoothly. Maintainers have been slow to get it ported to D8.

    Vendor Response

Thanks for your feedback, Jon! Definitely looks like we have a ways to go to better support users like yourselves. Your assessment that it's very much a tool for developers is still true, though we're working to make it easier for non-technical users over time. For what it's worth, Commerce 2.x had a full release on Drupal 8 in October 2017 and now serves over 6,000 merchants. There are definitely contributed modules touching on non-core feature sets that still need to be ported, but that's often out of our hands. Fortunately we're finding good partners and projects to fund these - look for the pace to accelerate even more in 2019. Feel free to email me if there's anything we can do for you in the meantime. Cheers!

    Pros:
To get this out of the way, Wordpress + Woocommerce is a lot easier to get up and going than Drupal and Drupal commerce. But if you need more than a very simple storefront, you'll quickly realize that going the Woocommerce route usually ends up requiring plugins. There are cons and benefits to both, but with the Drupal combo you get nearly unlimited flexibility without the need to buy plugins to accomplish the same (or better) functionality. Like all things Drupal, it just takes some more effort to learn, but once you do...the sky is the limit.
    Cons:
A lot of things with Drupal end up being more complicated than you expected, and working with this is no exception. There is good documentation however and the community is overall very supportive.

    Vendor Response

Thanks so much for your review! Our sweet spot really seems to be empowering developers / merchant development teams to develop custom eCommerce solutions, and it sounds like you've benefited from Drupal Commerce for just that use case. Cheers!

    Pros:
It speeds up the creation of Drupal commerce site 10-fold. Easy to get started, lots of configurations, but any ecommerce site will require a lot of set-up time and customizing. What I love most about Drupal sites, is how robust the online community is. I rarely run into a question/problem thta I can't get answered by searching the forumns.
    Cons:
Drupal works so differently than other CMS platforms the learning curve is long and at times frustrating. I banged my head against the wall learning it, but once I got it, I loved it.

    Vendor Response

Thanks for the honest review, Erin. We're well aware of the Drupal learning curve but very happy to hear that your effort was rewarded with such an increase in productivity. All the best!

Thanks much for your review, Rob. We're actively working to improve the UX of Drupal in general, but we're also currently pursuing JavaScript based store management interfaces so we aren't limited to the UI Drupal itself provides. Looking forward to releasing that, would love to get your feedback when we do!
