About ftrack

ftrack is a cloud-based project management, production tracking and synchronized media review platform that encourages collaboration between creative teams. Creative producers and supervisors can use the solution to plan task deadlines, schedule teams and allocate resources to projects.

Managers can track progress from the project's initiation to final delivery via ftrack's centralized database. Artists can check their to-do lists, communicate progress via notes, complete assigned tasks and provide feedback to producers and supervisors. ftrack also enables the creation of dashboards, which provides information on project progress via burndown charts and other similar widgets. Its review functionality allows teams to evaluate and approve media in synchronization, via a project browser.

ftrack integrates with many industry-standard creative tools such as Foundry's Nuke and Cinema 4D. It also offers an open-source API that enables customization of the solution such as the creation of bespoke tool integrations and an actions feature that enables users to automate time-consuming processes.

Pros:

Ftrack is very powerful and highly customizable which makes it an amazing tool for project management. What stood out for me is the fact that you can either see all of your project in 1 view or select which projet(s) you want to see and manage. Additionally, their reviewing tool, for both images and motion, is very efficient. It was built for collaboration in mind and you can tell!

Cons:

Because of it's customization capabilities, there's a bit of a learning curve to learn your way around the software. Additionally, the notification center could be improved. While it works and do the job fine, it's not as fluid as other internal communication tool that I'm using. A desktop app would be an amazing addition.

Pros:

The Project Management is great and the Client Reviews have been instrumental.

Cons:

The UI wasn't user friendly at first, this took some time. Documentation could be more elaborated as well, sometimes it's too simplistic or doesn't cover everything. A separate area of our business liked the old on-prem installation more than the current but that may be because of company policies and our own limitations.

Reasons for choosing ftrack

Ftrack was more approachable and didn't take a week long lecture on how to use it (I'm being sarcastic of course), which was a critical for those who were apprehensive about making the switch.

Reasons for switching to ftrack

Easier to see data, approachable, but also the reviews and price point at the time were the biggest selling point.

Pros:

Good resource visibility and tasks overview. Like that a lot is customisable and can be adjusted to different needs. Good interface.

Cons:

Hard to navigate sometimes with too many clicks. Wish a lot more fields and areas could be customisable or at least easier to customise by anyone, rather than only an IPA developer. Review system, particularly the client one to be more user friendly (look out for Proof HQ). Wish that Asset Builds could be managed in a centralised system outside of each individual projects and then linked to individual projects. Client Facing Project plans, with clear actions for clients.

Reasons for choosing ftrack

I think an alternative option would have been to create our own system/platform. I think it would be great to incorporate finance and admin aspects in the future. Quotes, rate cards, link these to project budgets. Manage POs, Invoices and Payments. This could be a great integration. We currently have to manage this separately which is not ideal. This would add great value to the system!

DCC integrations are poor. Project navigation inside the integrations are terrible. Its ease of use... being able to schedule, track and review all projects is critical for an animation studio. Being able to then supply the client a review to feedback and the whole team seeing it means it reduces bottlenecks and timelines.

Cons:

Its hard to find TD's to help implement some extra workflow features, and I wish the review system was more like syncsketch for more technical animation feedback, this would be more for internal reviews as clients wouldn't need that feedback tool. Apart from that its been brilliant.

More easy and people and artist friendly than others

Essential to coordinate and supervise the production of vfx. Manage the team it's easy, very easy. Not complex, not need to spend many time setting things or feeling you are in a excel with other skin

The system by tasks as cards. The learning curve. The filters and customizable on each part of ftrack. In 5 hours you are working with that

Cons:

The quality of the player. Not good at all, for vfx supervision need to download the origin. In softs like frame IO you can decide the quality of the video.

Pros:

Ftrack helped us a lot to manage the critical projects in this hard time of pandemic. Remote work made possible with this software to keep business running. I love the all-in-one features where I can upload preview, review it, manage the files and versions, keep track of time bid and may more tools.

Cons:

This software is almost perfect. I think, Uploading video via f-connect does not show the progress. No Idea why we remove the collaboration option from video review panel. It was way better than sharing screen on Skype or Teams.
