e traffic volumes, analytics requirements, and budget considerations. **Free plan** Hotjar's Free plan is a free forever option designed for individuals, small businesses, or those just starting with user behavior analytics. This plan allows tracking of up to 20,000 monthly sessions and provides access to core features including session replay and unlimited heatmaps with one month of data retention. **Pros:** - **Zero cost barrier:** The free plan provides access to powerful analytics tools without any financial commitment. - **Essential features included:** Offers both session replay and unlimited heatmaps, which are core to understanding user behavior. - **Standard filtering capabilities:** Includes useful filters such as new vs. returning users, pages viewed, user country, and device type. - **Key integrations:** Connects with popular tools including Google Analytics, Mixpanel, HubSpot, and Jira. **Cons:** - **Limited data retention:** Only stores data for one month, which restricts long-term trend analysis. - **Session cap:** The 20,000 monthly session limit may be quickly reached by growing websites. - **Basic functionality only:** Lacks advanced features and customization options available in paid plans. **Growth plan** The Growth plan is Hotjar's entry-level paid option at $49 per month (or $40 per month when billed annually). This plan is suitable for growing websites that need more advanced user behavior insights and longer data retention periods. **Pros:** - **Increased session capacity:** Accommodates higher traffic volumes than the Basic plan. - **Extended data retention:** Provides longer access to historical data for trend analysis. - **Enhanced filtering options:** Offers more advanced filtering capabilities for deeper insights. - **Additional team collaboration features:** Better supports teams working together on user experience optimization. **Cons:** - **Limited advanced features:** Still lacks some of the more sophisticated tools available in higher-tier plans. - **Moderate scalability:** May not be sufficient for rapidly growing websites or larger organizations due to limits on integrations and other functionality. - **Cost consideration:** Represents a significant jump from the free tier for budget-conscious users. **Pro plan** Specific pricing for the Pro plan is not publicly available. The plan is designed for established businesses with substantial website traffic and more complex analytics needs. It offers enhanced capabilities for teams focused on optimizing user experience and conversion rates. **Pros:** - **Higher session capacity:** Supports websites with significant traffic volumes. - **Advanced analytics features:** Provides more sophisticated tools for in-depth user behavior analysis. - **Extended data retention:** Offers longer access to historical data for comprehensive trend analysis. - **Enhanced team collaboration:** Includes features that facilitate better teamwork and insights sharing. **Cons:** - **High cost barrier:** Pricing for this plan isn’t publicly listed, but it’s designed for large, established businesses—making it impractical for smaller organizations. - **Feature complexity:** Some advanced features may have a steeper learning curve for new users. - **Potential feature overlap:** Some capabilities may duplicate functionality in other analytics tools already in use. **Enterprise plan** Specific pricing for the Enterprise plan is not publicly available. This trial provides full access to premium features without requiring payment information or setting up auto-charges. After the trial period, users can choose to upgrade to a paid plan or continue with the free plan indefinitely. **Payment options** Hotjar accepts payments in USD and offers both monthly and annual billing cycles. Opting for annual billing provides a ~20% discount across all paid plans. Additionally, Hotjar offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for all Growth plans, allowing users to request a full refund within the first month if they're not satisfied with the service. **Conclusion** After analyzing Hotjar's pricing structure, it's clear that the company offers a range of options designed to accommodate various website sizes, analytics needs, and budgets. - **For individuals and small websites:** The Free plan provides an excellent entry point at no cost. It offers core functionality, such as session replay and unlimited heatmaps, that can deliver valuable insights into user behavior. While limited by the 20,000 monthly session cap and one-month data retention, it's more than sufficient for small websites and those just beginning their user experience optimization journey. - **For growing businesses:** The Growth plan at $49 per month (or $40 with annual billing) strikes a balance between affordability and functionality. It offers increased session capacity and data retention, making it suitable for businesses that have outgrown the free plan but don't yet need enterprise-level features. - **For established businesses:** The Pro plan provides advanced analytics capabilities and supports higher traffic volumes. This plan is ideal for organizations that rely heavily on website performance and need deeper insights into user behavior to optimize conversion rates. - **For large enterprises:** The Enterprise plan delivers the complete Hotjar experience with premium features and maximum data retention. This plan is best suited for high-traffic websites and organizations with dedicated analytics teams that can fully leverage the advanced capabilities. When selecting a Hotjar plan, consider your website's monthly traffic volume, how long you need to retain data for analysis, the complexity of insights you require, and your available budget. The 15-day free trial offers an excellent opportunity to test Hotjar's premium features before committing to a paid plan. Additionally, the annual billing option provides significant savings for organizations planning long-term use of the platform.

Pros:
It is very simple, it works exactly as you expect it to, it is easy to set up and configure, and WOW is it ever powerful. It is literally like someone turning a light on when you are doing conversion rate optimization work. No more guessing. Now you can study user behavior and see EXACTLY how they are responding to your designs, UI/UX and interfaces. We have literally made MILLIONS of extra dollars once we started using Hotjar.
Cons:
There is little we don't like about Hotjar. It just works (and it is easy to use).

Reasons for choosing Hotjar

Hotjar had more features, tons of good reviews, and we had several word of mouth recommendations that was the way to go. We thought it had much more to offer than Smartlook.

Pros:
At each company that I have worked for, I always bring up HotJar as a solution they should implement as soon as possible. It is so easy to use and allows for such a comprehensive view of the customer experience that it's a loss to NOT use it! I love that it can capture click data, scroll depth, and even user interactions on the website. There is so much valuable information to be pulled from the data!
Cons:
There are two things that I'm a little bummed out about with HotJar. One issue is that they recently removed cross-domain tracking. This was a great benefit and we used it often, so not having it is tough. They also have a limit on the height of the pages that can be captured, 1500px. Our pages are slightly larger so we lose some detail on the report that we would have otherwise had.

Reasons for choosing Hotjar

Primarily I was familiar with HotJar so it was an easy choice.

Vendor Response

Hey Akande, Thanks so much for taking the time to review Hotjar! It's great to read that you're getting a lot of value from the tool :) It's indeed the case that we removed cross-domain tracking in light of our continued commitment to privacy-by-design. I'm sorry to hear that working with the tool is a bit tough without this - we'd like to help if we can! Do reach out to us at support@hotjar.com if you've got questions. Following up your note on the height of captured pages for Heatmaps - we do have a 15000px limit, but if it's a pain point I'd definitely suggest using the Suggest a Feature function in-app to let us know what you need :) All best, Alex

Optimize the UX of your website with Hotjar

4

Undoubtedly, Hotjar is a must-have tool to perform qualitative research on your website visitors so that you can improve the user experience. It will allow you the opportunity to further analyze the data of google analytics. With so many excellent features this popular tool will help you to do basic and effective research on your website. I would like to recommend Hotjar to anyone as it is so simple to use and the return on investment is also quite impressive.

Pros:
There is no denying the fact that Hotjar comes with some excellent and cool features to give you a great level of flexibility when it comes to the analysis of user behavior. Especially, the heatmapping feature of this tool will help you with user behavior analysis. Needless to say, setting up a heatmap is quite easy and it will also save you time. When you talk about visitor’s analysis of any website, pulling information from data is important. And Hotjar comes in handy at this point as it can capture click data, scroll depth, etc. on your site. On top of that, the customer experience you’ll get from Hotjar is amazing.
Cons:
As per the rules of nature, Hotjar is also not out of disadvantages. It has some cons as well. It doesn’t show data of text fields as per guidelines of GDRP. Another point, I want to mention here is with the angular Js website, the form system of Hotjar doesn’t work which is a great disadvantage for me.

Reasons for choosing Hotjar

Undoubtedly, Crazy Egg is also a great tool to serve my purpose. But, I chose Hotjar over it as I knew Hotjar from a long-ago even before I came to know about Crazy Egg.

Cons:

Reasons for switching to Hotjar
