Pros:
It is a very professional software which is widely used in professional environments like Offices and workspace. Also it lets you share files, make channels (groups) for activities, projects and other stuffs. It have features to delete the message with upthreads and also provision to reply in threads and follow/unfollow feature to unsubscribe from the notification.
Cons:
Mobile app has some issues with the push notifications, in web it works perfectly fine, but a little customization can help that. Moreover for keyboard users like me, there should be some more keyboard aided shortcuts to Edit/ delete messages instead of drawing over mouse actions.

My 6 months with Rocket Chat

Very satisfied . I have used Slack, Teamwork Chat before, but Rocket Chat is very economical to me ( free- minus the VPS cost). ANd it has everything we need.

Pros:
1. Installation is a breeze. I was able to install Rocket Chat, get SSL configured, and had a running server set up in an hour without having to wave through endless linux commands. 2. Inbuilt support, for Video call using Jitsi, and inbuilt notifications. 3. Slack like user interface , which my team can instantly connect to.
Cons:
1. The Quote a message, can be improved, it is visually not very clear. 2. The Video call doesn't ring inside the application, only gives a button to join which makes people skip it some times. 3. On Windows, if the app is running in background, you need to go to the notification panel to bring it to front, if you start from the Start Menu, it doesn't come to front. Overall, the shortcomings are very less and trivial. The software is very stable and a breeze to use.

Reasons for choosing Rocket.Chat

I tried it, loved it , stuck to it. It gave me no reason to switch.

Reasons for switching to Rocket.Chat

Slack doesnt have screen sharing on free version, which was the primary reason I shifted to Rocket CHat

Vendor Response

A completely free chat tool for a basic use

3

For a free software, it is a good one. It could replace a basic use of Slack for example. You could spare some cost for a startup, as it is for our case.

Pros:
It is FREE. Really free. COMPLETELY free chat system, documents sharing, team discussions and info sharing. Also, you can create conversation inside channel as a room. Quite handy to avoid 1000 channels.
Cons:
There are bugs that are not fixed (and it has been years...) Eg : once you remove notifications from a channel, even if you try reactivate them, it does not work anymore. It is very confusing to go back if you click on add a file out of purpose... It makes it difficult to use sometimes.

Excellent Open Source Chat Solution with Many Integrations

5

Overall, Rocket.Chat provides all of the chat solutions I am looking for. Public channels, private channels, private messaging, Webhooks and integrations, including SMS and a website chat widget. Setup is incredibly easy using Docker or Ubuntu Snap.

Ratings Breakdown

Pros:
It's open source, easy to deploy and customize. It allows for easy integrations using Webhooks, with Twilio's API, and has a live chat widget for your website.
Cons:
There are still a couple of quirks in the iOS app, but overall it runs smoothly. Accessing and registering for the Rocket.Chat cloud marketplace is not as intuitive as it could be. The marketplace also requires a paid plan.

Reasons for choosing Rocket.Chat

I chose Rocket.Chat because it's open source and self-hosted, in addition to being able to integrate it with other applications.

Reasons for switching to Rocket.Chat

Rocket.Chat is open source and can be self-hosted, which means you're in control of your data and privacy. It also has additional features that Slack doesn't have.

Vendor Response

Dear Nick, Thanks for the feedback on your experience with our platform. We sincerely appreciate your insight because it helps us build a better customer experience!

Pros:
+ Cloud-hosted option + Sleek UI + extensive access controls/user permissions + Auditing panel + REST API + can be accessed on a web browser/desktop client
Cons:
- NO native Office365/Azure AD SSO - Can be pricey compared to Microsoft Teams in 2020

Reasons for choosing Rocket.Chat

Microsoft Teams at the time was still new. it did not have all of the features i was looking for at the time.

Reasons for switching to Rocket.Chat

We were using an on premise server hosting Openfire IM, this system was painfully dated and we wanted something akin to Slack. Rocket.Chat advertised itself as a open source/cost effective alternative to Slack

To summarize, makes communicating within company very easy. Love ability to create groups, send a variety of message formats, and chat history logging.

Pros:
Number one thing -> love the fact that it keeps all logs of chats saved. Very easy to message code snippets or images or any sort of file to coworkers.
Cons:
Haven't found anything I disliked about rocketchat yet. It is quite a big upgrade over our last messaging tool (skype).

Reasons for switching to Rocket.Chat

I am not sure why the company decided to make the switch but the biggest upgrades over skype was the way Rocketchat saves chat histories is a lot better than Skype and I always had issues sending larger files or code snippets over skype.

Vendor Response

Dear Faraan, Thanks for the feedback on your experience with our platform. We sincerely appreciate your insight because it helps us build a better customer experience!

Open-Source solution for live chat

4

Ratings Breakdown

3
Ease of use
4
Value for money
4
Functionality
icon
Pros:
The customization you can do, and the simplicity into adding a live chat widget into your web app in the way you like without importing any extra modules, you just run a JavaScript script in your web app. And the functionality is so good but to find how to correctly use them might be a bit hard :)
Cons:
That the UI looks a bit weird or old and like for example if you want to embed live chat, you use a script, by default it will only run on the server's address and not any website, to make it work anywhere, it's in another page, which is better to make it in the same page instead.

Reasons for choosing Rocket.Chat

Because Rocket.Chat is completely free (only if you host it on your server) and for it being open source which is so cool for developers while LiveChat is paid and might have not all the functionality Rocket.Chat has.

Reasons for switching to Rocket.Chat

Because Intercom although it got many many good features, Rocket.Chat is free, open-source and even got all (most) features Intercom has and maybe a few more.

A great, free Slack replacement

5

Cross-country communications have been simplified and we've been able to move from Slack to Rocket.chat with very little learning curve for our users. While gaining an unlimited amount of messages being saved, nearly unlimited storage space, and still keeping a familiar appearance, we've been able to implement SSO and created a number of custom data integrations with our ticketing system.

Pros:
OpenSource, free, and self hosted, gives us the freedom to manage and maintain a nationwide communications platform while keeping the costs very low.
Cons:
The biggest issue we have with Rocket.chat is somewhat inconsistent notifications being received to some mobile phones.

Reasons for switching to Rocket.Chat

Slack was costing too much for the many users we had, and we had little control over the infrastructure outages and associated costs.

Vendor Response

Hi Gavin, Your helpful comments are much appreciated, and your feedback will help us to continually improve our platform. Thank you very much!
