About Google Cloud Run

Google Cloud Run is a fully managed platform that enables developers to build and deploy scalable containerized applications. The platform supports a wide range of programming languages such as Go, Python, Java, Node.js, .NET, and Ruby. It caters to various professionals including developers, software engineers, web developers, AI specialists, and IT professionals.

Developers can run frontend and backend services, batch jobs, host large language models, and queue processing workloads without managing any infrastructure. Google Cloud Run also supports source-based deployment options for various languages, automatically building the container for the developer and eliminating the need to install Docker.

Cloud Run's autoscaling capabilities help automatically scale containers up and down from zero, ensuring users only pay when the code is running. The platform offers on-demand access to NVIDIA L4 GPUs for running AI inference workloads, with GPU instances scaling to zero. Developers can also write and deploy functions directly with Cloud Run, providing control over the underlying service configuration.

Cloud Run - the deploy at once method for busy developers

5

Always enjoy working with Google Cloud Run. Big diff compared to having a virtual machine and running apps in webservers there. The fact that it goes from zero to active traffic without any extra configuration made me feel confident that I could focus on building features. The pricing model also made sense to me because I only paid when the service is actually running.

Pros:
Managed infra, autoscale, pay per use, integration with my build/deploy pipelines. Warn starts, is quick to start any apps. Cloud Run Functions is even more useful.
Cons:
Wish to have sometimes a bit of control of the infra under it, add some more memory etc. More granular access controls as well.

Easy deployment of container workloads with Cloud Run

3

We use Cloud Run for many of our internal financial service applications. Currently we do not have compute intensive worklaods running, therefore, we haven't faced any major issues. However, during testing we have deployed some heavy workloads which did not turn out and work well in Cloud Run.

Pros:
Quickly deploy your YAMLs without having to spin Kubernetes infrastructure. No maintainence of the underlying architecture is required since this is managed service and Cloud Run is managed by Google. Security of the underlying infrastructure is also the responsibility of Google. You can simply expose applications to to Internet with ease as native networking solutions from Google are integrated with Cloud Run.
Cons:
The platform is quite laggy and there is barely no configuration of the underlying infrastructure you can set. This may affect your applications as application which use heavy compute or memory may end up sitting in an infrastrcture where low compute is provided by Google, which in-turn creates a lot of problems and inefficiencies.

Pros:
It can be considered a natural evolution of Google App Engine, when the deployed product becomes more and more complex
Cons:
On the other hand, if you have a simple MVP (minimum viable product) to present or deploy, the complexity introduced by GCR can be sometimes overwhelming

Reasons for switching to Google Cloud Run

You can switch to GCR to have a more advanced management of the applications you deploy
