About Network Performance Monitor

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) is a cloud-based network monitoring solution that enables users to detect, diagnose, and resolve network performance issues. The solution allows users to design a customizable topology for the entire network framework and tracks failure events, system checks, performance issues and more.

NPM enables businesses to create a service-oriented view of their IT infrastructure and identify key network issues. NPM automatically discovers, maps, and monitors every device within a network and presents interactive charts, graphs, and tables in a fully customizable web interface. IT administrators and users can then collect, store and analyze performance data from these devices to determine network efficiency and resolve issues.

NPM offers a web-based dashboard for visualizing and monitoring real-time system health and performance metrics. The solution also offers fault, performance, and availability monitoring as well as hop-by-hop critical path analysis, cross-stack network data correlation, customizable topology and dependency-aware alerts.

Excellent Network Monitoring Software from SolarWinds

We love this software - it gives us alerts and generates ticket emails when a node has been down or is having a packet loss issue, or if we need to monitor bandwidth usage. We will likely stick with NPM for quite some time.

Pros:

We can see at a glance if a client connection is down or has an issue. We have to be able to see at times if there is a packet loss issue at the ISP level, and NPM definitely helps with this.

Cons:

After spending some time thinking, there is not much to complain about. The client node window does contain a LOT of info and can be slightly overwhelming until enough time has been spent navigating around.

Works well overall but can get slow over time

We use this software to monitor our network equipment and servers and for the price it works well for doing that.

Was easy to setup and maintain and their support seems to be great to work with.

Cons:

Over time it gets really slow and the server needs rebooted. Nothing I've tried including putting it on a new server seems to rectify this.

You can not fix something you do not know is broken. NPM allow you to be notified as soon a any component you are monitoring goes off line. Its a game changer for IT pro's trying to get a handle on their network and hardware.

The in-depth analysis to a detected fault helps remedial ease resolution timelines. I like its 30 day full functional trial period, that helps one fully understand what he / she is buying.

SolarWinds Review

SolarWinds is what you expect from a legacy SNMP monitoring and management system... it's great for managing network devices. The rest of it is not so good. Its IPAM solution has a Read only API, meaning you can't modify records with your existing automation. Worse yet, they have no plans to fix it. It can do a lot of things, just not well. You will end up needing to fill the gaps with other tools.
