About TheraNest

TheraNest is an HIPAA-compliant web-based mental health solution used by solo practitioners, large mental health practices, and nonprofit organizations. The solution is suited for therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers.

TheraNest offers electronic medical records (EMR) software with a mobile app for Android and iOS. The solution also includes a client portal, patient scheduling, DSM/ICD codes, progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge notes. Users can review and cosign notes and build custom forms.

TheraNest's billing features include insurance claims, credit card services, and batch invoices. Users can generate reports, including payroll, staff billing, and invoice reports. Unlimited document storage and unlimited support are included.

TheraNest's client portal allows clients to schedule appointments, complete demographic information, enter insurance information and submit intake forms from within their own secure accounts. Everything entered in the client portal will sync to clients’ accounts in TheraNest. The system also includes voice, text and email reminders for patients.

Ease to use, and the best Customer Service

I have accurate records and I have several options for my notes. I love the new feature of the electronic portal for client paperwork. The appt calendar works best on the computer but I can make good changes on my phone.

I have loved watching this program develop and grow in the last 10 years. I began Theranest when they were first starting and it was pretty bare bones. Which is what I needed as a new business owner so that I could grow with the program. At that time, I really wanted exact notes that would reflect exactly what happened in the sessions and Theranest provided that place. It has grown however to a much better system and a much better process. I know that I do not use a lot of the process because I have an outside biller. But all the parts I do use are the best and I have tried several.
Cons:
The cost of anything is always a killer for a small business. The cost however has been fair for the service that you get.

Theranest experience from a relatively small agency

My overall experience has been positive. I appreciate that the developers send out information about changes made. Customer support has been quick and efficient.

I find it pretty intuitive. Pretty simple to use once you get a feel for how the overall program works. I like that the cost is based on the number of clients you're working with as opposed to the number of staff. This was helpful especially when we were just getting started.
Cons:
I really don't like the way group sessions have to be scheduled. I also don't like that after someone is removed from a group, they may still show up on the progress notes list, even though it does show them as removed from the group, that tends to be an irritant for our staff.

Reasons for choosing TheraNest

More cost effective for our needs. Other programs were too expensive starting out.

Pros:
I love that the software allows for easy patient/client account management.
Cons:
It would be better if there was a way to manually update modifiers without them being actually attached to the CPT codes. I would also prefer that the system would retain history and not change old claims by updating to new insurance when it is added. We like to look back and see where claims were submitted to.

Over all it has been good, its getting a bit expensive as every luttle thing like using the ledger now costs so I have to use another way pf tracking my own invoices Not good

I like that is is reliable it usually works, the NEW layout isnt very user friendly anf finding things like treatment plan is hard its in an odd place as is the assessment? Please fix this
Cons:
It is no longer user friendly findind intake assessment papers and treatment plans is strange and difficult to remembet. I also do not like that i cannot put a recurring telehealth appointment on the schedule.

Theranest lies about their customer service

From time to time, I was able to break through to their "upper management" and was told they really care about me and my clients and my ability to deliver therapy to those in need. This too turned out to be a falsity. The decision to cut me out was born of my holding them to their word about live customer service. I have requested to speak to the business owner, but so far, the coward has not had the necessary honor to call a fellow business person to discuss this travesty. I am considering legal action against this company to recoup the money it will cost me to take down my data from Theranest and use another competitive software. THEY ARE POISON. Stay away from them.

Pros:
It's a comprehensive program that handles most aspects of the claim processing we all need in a busy practice. They SAY they offer live customer service when a user runs into questions about how to use the program. That is why I chose them over Simple Practice, which offers NO live customer service. The reality is when you are in need of an answer on how to use an aspect of the program, you must leave a message on a voice mail. They will call you back when it's convenient for them to do so - and that's never when I need an answer. I do all of my claims submissions myself and I'm a fairly intelligent and computer literate user. This is a complex, intricate software with may nuances in use. My time is limited, and so it doesn't work for me to have to wait for an answer until it's convenient for them to call me back.
Cons:
Simply put, they lie about their live customer service. Their training videos are convoluted, not well-produced and hard to follow in terms of content. I spent countless hours and significant money to make the transfer over to Theranest, and when I held them to account for their promised and not delivered live customer service they CANCELLED MY ACCOUNT! This has caused me undue stress and dollars...and they have been very callous and offered no-compromise position. I complained too much, and therefore, they got rid of me! Nice!

I chose them because they said they had live customer service available. This turned out to not be true.

Reasons for switching to TheraNest

Simple Practice makes no false statements about Customer service. They don't offer ANY live customer service options, and the program is fairly buggy and complicated.

Frustrated with Smartphone interfacing

Overall, I like Theranest and am happy with how it works when on my desktop and how it helps me run my business. The interfacing with the smartphone is the only thing that annoys me currently.

Value for money, ease of use and billing using credit card. Scheduling is also an obvious big part of why I use this software, along with sending paperwork to clients. Customer service has been professional and attentive they also get back to me in a timely matter that has been a plus.
Cons:
Im very frustrated that the scrolling features often do not work on my Android phone. In the early stages of using Theranest this was never an issue. Over the last year I have needed to connect with IT to try and resolve this. Solutions work for a season then stop working again. It is inconsistent in this "bug." Sometimes its the schedule that wont move, while currently it is when I want to write notes, it wont scroll [in fact its doing right now in checking it...scrolls for a second then freezes]. This problem alone often makes me question continuing with the product as it needs to be smartphone compatible and dependable, it is super frustrating. Additionally, this year I received a 1099 with my personal name and not my company name. This was due [I think] to the switch over from Vantage to Ensura. Im not sure why or how this occurred. After several emails I think it should resolve itself next tax cycle, but this was another weird frustration. I dont care who runs my credit card payments, but to not have it align with my company name seemed like a "dropped ball." Water under the bridge unless my 2026 tax information is wrong.

The Theranest challenge

I am happy that the insurance accepts my notes and I am able to peruse through my notes when I need to. I am having trouble scheduling my clients as sometimes the schedule is contemptuous. Otherwise, I am pleased with using this program to document my visits.

Most of the entries are easy to enter. The choices are helpful. I like the dropdown options. I like having choices for my client's report. I like satisfying my insurance carriers so that I can counsel my clients appropriately.
Cons:
There are pages (Locus/discharge pages), that are not to be used. It's annoying to click on a page and find out it is no longer being used. I don't care for the scheduling section. It will double and triple schedule my client. I have to go through the appointment schedule to correct each appointment individually. That is bothersome.

I like how easy it is to use. Scheduling appointments is simple, and I can make changes to my schedule without any hassle. I also like the AI note feature because it helps me write notes faster and saves a lot of time.
Cons:
The AI note feature is not available for the initial assessment, and it would be helpful if it could be added there as well. I also prefer having the “Reminder Log” as its own tab rather than being part of a drop-down menu, which would make it easier and quicker to access.
