Our Analysis of Mailchimp's Pricing Plans
We've thoroughly analyzed the key advantages and limitations of Mailchimp's pricing plans to help you determine which option best aligns with your marketing needs and budget. The provider offers four email marketing pricing tiers: Free, Essentials, Standard, and Premium plans. The plans cater to businesses of different sizes and marketing requirements, and understanding the nuances of each is essential for making an informed decision.
**Fre...
e plan** Mailchimp's Free plan is designed for businesses just starting in email marketing or those with very basic needs. It allows up to 500 contacts with a maximum of 1,000 email sends per month (or 500 per day) at no charge. This plan includes basic reporting and analytics, a single audience, one user seat, and pop-up forms. Users can also create a website with a Mailchimp domain. **Pros:** - **No financial commitment:** The Free plan allows businesses to explore Mailchimp's core functionality at no cost. - **Essential marketing tools:** Includes customizable forms and landing pages and basic reporting and analytics to track campaign performance. - **Free website features:** Build and publish a website as part of your marketing strategy, growing your audience and highlighting your brand. **Cons:** - **Limited contact capacity and email volume:** The limits of 500 contacts and 1,000 monthly emails can quickly become restrictive for growing businesses. - **No SMS/MMS:** The Free plan doesn’t give users access to the text marketing add-on available with other plans. - **Mailchimp branding:** All emails include Mailchimp branding, which may appear less professional to recipients. **Essentials plan** The Essentials plan is designed for small businesses that require more robust email marketing capabilities. Pricing starts at $13 per month for up to 500 contacts, with costs increasing as your contact list grows (up to 50,000). This plan allows for email sends up to 10x your contact limit and includes 24/7 email and chat support, up to three audiences, three user seats, and A/B testing capabilities. Users can also purchase an SMS add-on at this plan level. **Pros:** - **Expanded support options:** 24/7 email and chat support ensures help is available whenever you need it. - **Multiple audience management:** The ability to manage up to three audiences allows for more targeted marketing. - **Automation:** Use the Customer Journey Builder to automate email sends based on customer actions. **Cons:** - **Limited reporting:** The Essentials plan includes the same standard reporting features as the Free plan. - **Basic segmentation:** Lacks advanced segmentation and behavioral targeting features needed for sophisticated campaigns. - **Template limitations:** No access to custom-coded templates, which may restrict design flexibility. **Standard plan** The Standard plan is designed for growing businesses that require advanced marketing capabilities. Pricing starts at $20 per month for up to 500 contacts, with tiered pricing available as your contact list expands (up to 100,000). This plan includes email sends up to 12x your contact limit, advanced reporting and analytics, up to five audiences, five user seats, and significantly enhanced marketing features. **Pros:** - **Advanced marketing tools:** Access to dynamic content, advanced segmentation, and behavioral targeting enables sophisticated campaigns. - **Expanded automation:** Up to 200 journey points for automated customer journeys allow for complex marketing workflows. - **Add-on access:** Plan users can add SMS/MMS functionality and also purchase transactional emails triggered by customer actions (e.g., making a purchase). **Cons:** - **No premium support:** Unlike in the Premium plan, users don’t have access to premium migration services or phone and priority support. - **Contact caps:** Although the threshold is double that of the previous plan, the Standard plan still caps contacts at 100,000, which may limit larger and fast-growing businesses. - **Limited audience capacity:** Five audiences may not be sufficient for businesses with diverse product lines or market segments. **Premium plan** The Premium plan is Mailchimp's most comprehensive offering, designed for large businesses with sophisticated marketing needs. Starting at $350 per month for up to 10,000 contacts, this plan includes email sends up to 15x your contact limit, unlimited audiences, unlimited user seats, and the full suite of Mailchimp's advanced features. **Pros:** - **Comprehensive support:** Priority phone support and a dedicated customer success manager ensure prompt assistance. - **Unlimited collaboration:** Unlimited user seats and audiences allow for extensive team collaboration and market segmentation. - **Migration assistance:** Dedicated onboarding and migration support simplifies the transition from other platforms. **Cons:** - **Significant investment:** The high starting price point may be prohibitive for smaller businesses. - **Transactional add-on required:** Even on the highest-level plan, transaction emails are only available via a paid add-on. - **Feature complexity:** The extensive feature set may be overwhelming and potentially underutilized by some organizations. **Pay-As-You-Go plan** For businesses that send emails infrequently or have seasonal marketing needs, Mailchimp offers a Pay-As-You-Go option. This plan allows you to purchase email credits at localized rates without a monthly subscription commitment. Packages start at 5,000 credits and go up to 25 million. **Add-ons** Mailchimp offers multiple add-ons to enhance users' marketing efforts. Its primary add-ons are for text marketing, transactional emails, and branded websites. **SMS/MMS:** For $20 per month, users can add text marketing functionality to any paid plan (this is not available for the Free plan). Essentials plan users have access to only SMS text messages, while Standard and Premium plan users have access to SMS and MMS text messages. **Transaction emails:** Transactional emails are available in blocks of 25,000. Pricing starts at $20 per month per block. The price per block decreases the more blocks you purchase; for example, if you buy 21-40 blocks, the cost is $18 per month per block. This add-on is available only with the Standard and Premium plans. **Branded websites:** Users can connect a custom domain to their free websites (available in all email marketing plans) for $10 per month. **Conclusion** Our analysis of Mailchimp's pricing structure finds that the company offers a range of options to accommodate businesses at various stages of growth and with different marketing needs. **For startups and very small businesses:** The Free plan offers a no-cost entry point to email marketing with basic functionality. It's ideal for businesses just testing the waters or with very limited contact lists. However, the constraints on contacts, email volume, and features mean most growing businesses will quickly outgrow this tier. **For small businesses with established email marketing needs:** The Essentials plan provides a good balance of features and affordability. With improved support, multiple audiences, basic automation, and A/B testing capabilities, it provides the core tools needed for effective email marketing without overwhelming complexity or cost. **For midsize businesses with sophisticated marketing strategies:** The Standard plan delivers the advanced features needed for more complex marketing efforts. With enhanced automation, segmentation, and customization options, this plan enables businesses to create more targeted and effective campaigns that drive meaningful results. Full text marketing (SMS and MMS) and transactional email add-ons are also available with this plan. **For large businesses and marketing teams:** The Premium plan offers enterprise-level capabilities, including unlimited audiences and users and comprehensive support. The dedicated resources and advanced features make it suitable for organizations with complex marketing operations and multiple teams collaborating on campaigns. **For seasonal or occasional marketers:** The Pay-As-You-Go option offers flexibility for businesses that don't need to send emails regularly but still want access to professional email marketing tools when they do. When selecting a Mailchimp plan, businesses should carefully consider their current contact list size, email frequency, required features, and anticipated growth. By aligning these factors with the appropriate plan, organizations can optimize their email marketing efforts while ensuring they're not paying for unnecessary features or capacity. Businesses can try the Essentials and Standard plans for free for 14 days to determine if they are a good fit.Compare Pricing

Reasons for choosing Mailchimp
MailChimp was my first choice. However I later switched to Klaviyo due to it having more features. But After using Klaviyo for nearly a year, their team had no intentions to update their Wordpress plugin which was causing peoples websites to run slowly, and their plugin was very buggy. So I returned to using MailChimp was is the safer solution.

Happy with my choice for getting started in email automation. However, it really needs the paid plan. At that point, I would carefully consider which features are actually needed and maybe make a more rational choice of cost, plan, and features

Solid Email Marketing Platform
4
My overall experience is that Mailchimp works well for most SMB needs as long as you accept that it still requires some IT oversight. Once it is set up, day to day usage is smooth and marketing teams rarely need help for basic tasks. The issues usually come from scaling, integrations, and access control needs that go beyond simple campaign work. I do not have to put out fires often, but I do find myself checking in on sync jobs, cleaning up lists, and helping troubleshoot confusing warnings. It is a dependable tool for regular email work, but it has gaps that keep it from feeling fully hands off.

We chose Mailchimp over Brevo because Mailchimp is easier for non technical staff to use, has a cleaner interface, and fits our existing workflows with less admin overhead.
