About 1Password

1Password protects and stores all company secrets beyond SSO such as passwords, security tokens, 2FA codes, documents, and passkeys (coming soon) to centralize and simplify the sign-in experience. Employees get quick, secure access to any app or service – even those Security or IT may not be aware of – and can safely manage and share everything they need to work together productively. Developers also have access to a collection of features to help secure secrets and speed up workflows throughout the software development life cycle.

1Password also provides admins with more control and visibility as a result of aggregating identity and centralizing credential management. It is easy to deploy and integrates with Azure AD, Okta, OneLogin, Google Workspace and more, so admins can automatically provision employees or configure SSO using the systems they already trust. You can view data breaches, password vulnerabilities, and usage insights in a single dashboard, or send activity data to your SIEM tool via our Events API giving you a complete picture of your security posture.

1Password is secure and private by design. We’re the only password manager that can say with full confidence y...

our data and secrets will remain safe in the unlikely event of a breach. 1Password’s unique Two-Key-Derivation using the combination of an account password and Secret Key (128-bit, machine-generated code) means nobody could decrypt the data in the unlikely case they were able to access it. To keep data safe at rest and in transit, our security approach starts with AES 256-bit encryption, and we use multiple techniques to make sure only you have access to your information. No other password manager uses SRP protocol to prevent anyone from stealing your credentials or reading any non-secret information sent to the server. Lastly, we’ve built our Single Sign-On integration maintaining zero-knowledge architecture and end-to-end encryption using a trusted device model meaning even if your identity provider credentials are compromised, attackers still wouldn’t be able to access your 1Password data. See our security white paper to learn more. Coming summer 2023 we’ll be supporting sign-up and sign in to 1Password using passkeys. In Q2, we are also beginning support for the storing of passkeys within 1Password so that our users can securely access passkeys across platforms in the same place where they keep passwords and other secure information.

We use a family plan, which is great because we each have our own vault but we also have several vaults we share with each other and with our adult children.

Pros:
It's worry free. I select a category -- login, credit card, bank, driver's license, and many more -- and enter the data. From that moment on, the data is stored securely and is available on my PC and my phone.
Cons:
Occasionally, 1Password doesn't recognize an app on my phone when I need to log in. However, that's not a big deal because it just take a few extra swipes to activate it and copy the required password.

The best password manager there is

I have used 1Password personally for about 9 years, and have rolled out 1Password for business at my last 5 employers over the last 7 years. It's fantastic and I couldn't live without it now.

Pros:
My favourite thing about 1Password is that with the business plan we get to offer a family license to all our users. Which means we can instil the idea of using strong secure passwords and recording them in a safe and encrypted location outside of work. Which I think is important, if people are away of the best practices in personal life they will bring that mindset to the workplace.
Cons:
The only downside I have for 1Password was the complicated setup for user-provisioning with Microsoft Entra. Although it's not technically too challenging when you use tools like terraform or similar, but I haven't come across a platform before that needs additional infrastructure setup like the SCIM bridge in order to do automated user provisioning.

Reasons for choosing 1Password

I have used LastPass in the past, but the cyber breaches deemed it a non-starter for me. And Bitwarden is great, I've used it personally before, but the features and security of 1Password with the reasonable cost made it hard to beat.

Reasons for switching to 1Password

KeePass is an excellent free tool don't get me wrong, but I first started using it 13 years ago, and in 2024 it looks the exact same. It's on-premise by default which means it's not accessible outside of the network, with no SSO, user provisioning etc. it uses a database file again on-premise and has no mobile app, browser extension, MFA support or passkeys etc.

Best Independent Password Manager

5

Excellent company. Fully engaged leadership. They understand their customers and their role. I love the fact this thing works and I love that 1Password is helping me stay current with both operational user security issues as well as new trends. I am betting a lot on any password or security management company - I have confidence in this team. They are good. They get that their daily job is that this has to work and be secure daily - everything else is frosting on the cake.

1Password is the best password manager going

Pros:
The company, 1Password, is dedicated to the product 1Password. It's all they do and they clearly care to do it well. They not only stay on top of security trends, but are helping push the industry forward, e.g. with their support and advocacy of passkeys. You can look up technical details of their encryption, audits, etc. better than I can describe them here, but they are copacetic. They keep the product regularly updated without breaking anything, but making important improvements. They seem to work a lot on user experience, accessibility, and website compatibility. It has an effective and easy API and CLI tool. It's really a pleasure to use. As much as one can enjoy the utilitarian role a password manager plays, I enjoy interacting with 1Password. My family is not so nerdy, but they set it up by themselves and actually use it—that's the highest praise I can give.
Cons:
It's not cheap. It's definitely worth the price, but there are free alternatives. It's not open source. There are decent reasons [sensitive content hidden] and they have enough other forms of accountability that I am not concerned, but you may prefer open source software. Sharing items is not quite intuitive. There's sharing with your family/org by moving to a shared folder, then sharing a secure link, and sharing content as text. These different functions have colliding names and inconsistent icons in inconsistent places across the different apps. They do seem to be making incremental improvements in this area lately.

Reasons for choosing 1Password

LastPass is slowly dying. See the “switch“ comment for details. Bitwarden is cool, but not as easy to use as 1Password. I wanted my family and friends to get on board, and 1P makes it as easy as possible to do that.

Reasons for switching to 1Password

LastPass was the only serious game in town when I started using it, c. 2009. But they haven't kept up. Since they were acquired, the product has stagnated. The interface is clunky, new standards and features are slow in coming, and there's no sign they'll improve. And then there was the breach. 1Password is a pleasure to use by comparison. And more importantly, the company is dedicated to the product and clearly focused on user security and experience.

Pros:
The user interface is extremely intuitive. Plus, the whole system just works smoothly (sharing passwords with groups of people who all have access; creating 2FA codes; creating & sharing passkeys; security).
Cons:
The app is so secure that it can be a little confusing how to set up a new device, but 1Password makes it so simple with their "Emergency Kit" and step-by-step instructions that it's really not an issue.

Reasons for choosing 1Password

1Password was the most user-friendly, and it was simultaneously competitive in price. It was an easy decision. I was also really impressed by the level of detail around keeping the platform highly secure. This page was really insightful: https://1password.com/security/

Reasons for switching to 1Password

I wanted a simple way to share passwords securely with others on my team.

Value for money
4
Functionality

Pros:
It has a familiar and easy to understand user interface. It performs as designed most of the time, and working around the automated functionality when it doesn't work is easy because anything can be confidentially copied out of 1Password and into the clipboard to paste wherever you need it. My impression is that 90% of the time 1Password works as intended, and the rest of the time I can work around with copy and paste.
Cons:
When importing from LastPass, it did not bring in attached items. It would be great if that import function could be fixed, although I don't need it now, I suppose.

Reasons for choosing 1Password

Family members favored 1Password because of greater ease of use and the ability to create family groupings for our vaults.

Reasons for switching to 1Password

Data breach at LastPass eroded my confidence in LastPass, and the stewardship of the parent company.
