Oscommerce Is A Highly Customizable Shopping Cart Solution

Using Oscommerce enables online purchasing with flexible technology that can be customized with any feature that you can think of for your business. I have used it for many years, as long as you have a good php developer at your disposal when you need one, you can use this software with confidence.

Pros:

Oscommerce is very flexible and easy to customize. It's easy to add features and functionality that your unique business might need. There are thousands of plug ins that you can add to Oscommerce, many of which are free. Oscommerce itself is free to download and is "open source".

Cons:

The support for Oscommerce is not very great and the documentation is not as strong as other shopping carts. If you have a technical challenge you probably need an experienced Oscommerce expert who is familiar with the code. The code is not as modern but it is lightweight and loads fast.

The Grandfather of eCommerce

We launched Ireland's first CD/DVD store and we came across osCommerce shortly after its launch. We had the store setup up in less than 2 months and training the team was pretty easy. It had some amazing features for something that came out 20 years ago.

Pros:

It was a straightforward and easy platform to get used to. It was simple to set up and install on your server for the beginners in ecommerce.

Cons:

It took a bit of work to customise back in 2000 although it was a brand new software and therefore had a good few bugs that took a bit workaround.

Somehow oudated ecommerce solution

We worked with this more than 12 years ago and back then, it felt already as outdated so we started working with VirtueMart for Joomla and Prestashop, which we felt at that time were better options and easier to work with. Nowadays we work with WooCommerce for WordPress which is an incredible solution and if worked properly, can scale a lot.

It's limited in different ways although it is opensource, because to code on top of it requires a steep learning curve and community is not that big so there are not there many addons compared to other opensource solutions that evolved a lot more

It's Just Too Risky Anymore

There was a time when OSC was a great choice for a small business online shopping cart. That time has passed. Unless you are an expert, get on a platform that manages responsive code, security, and risks.

When I first setup OSC, it was a great solution for small business. The price was right and it got the job done if you needed an online shopping cart.

Cons:

The idea of self-hosting and maintaining your own code is now obsolete. My site was hacked several times and there was a constant threat that had to be managed. Adding new features and functions also required coding and knowledge of SQL. Graphically, OSC was not responsive without major code changes. There are now better alternatives like BigCommerce and Shopify just to name a few. Threat management and responsive site code is managed by the platform and there are many templates and integrations available.

Reasons for choosing osCommerce Online Merchant

I switched from osCommerce to BigCommerce and I am happy with that choice.

We used osCommerce for about 10 years to manage our first online shopping offering for our winery and it was an effective tool. However, as time grew we actually found using it internally for order dispatch and inventory management and basic CRM functions was far better. However, the difficulty with integrating it into our accounting software and our needs for more sophisticated inventory management caused us to eventually move to a different platform.

Cons:

Difficulty encountered with tax rounding errors and the need for an audit log of inventory transactions/adjustments
