Our Analysis of QuickBooks Online's Pricing Plans

We've dug deep into QuickBooks Online's subscription plans to help you determine the best fit for your accounting needs. We’ve also summarized the advantages and limitations of each tier. QuickBooks Online offers four distinct plans: Simple Start, Plus, and Advanced. Each option is tailored to accommodate businesses at different stages of growth and complexity, so understanding the nuances of these plans is key to selecting the right one for...

your organization. __Simple Start Plan__ The Simple Start Plan is tailored for small businesses and entrepreneurs just starting their journey. At $35 per month ($17.50 per month for the first 3 months), it offers a cost-effective solution for managing finances. Key features include automated bookkeeping, invoice processing, and cash flow management. **Pros:** - **Budget-friendly:** The current discounted introductory rate makes it accessible for businesses with limited financial resources. - **Essential features:** Provides fundamental accounting tools necessary for small businesses to manage their finances effectively. - **Expert guidance:** Includes 30 days of free expert-assisted setup and bookkeeping guidance to help users get started. **Cons:** - **Restricted integrations:** Allows connecting only one online sales channel, limiting the ability to sync data from various platforms. - **Basic reporting:** Offers general reports and tax deductions, but may not provide in-depth insights for complex financial analysis. __Plus Plan__ The Plus Plan caters to established businesses with more complex financial management needs. At $99 per month ($49.50 per month for the first 3 months), it offers a comprehensive set of features. **Pros:** - **Extensive reporting:** Provides comprehensive reports, including inventory and profitability analysis, enabling data-driven decision-making. - **Unlimited sales channel integration:** Allows connecting all available online sales channels, streamlining data synchronization across platforms. - **Inventory management:** Includes tools for tracking inventory levels, costs, and reorder points, crucial for product-based businesses. **Cons:** - **Steep pricing:** The monthly cost may be prohibitive for some small businesses, especially those with tight budgets. - **Limited user access:** Supports up to five users, which may not be sufficient for larger teams or businesses with multiple departments. - **Learning curve:** The advanced features may require more time and effort to master, especially for users without prior accounting experience. __Advanced Plan__ The Advanced Plan is tailored for larger businesses with extensive financial management requirements. Priced at $235 per month ($117.50 per month for the first 3 months), it offers the most comprehensive feature set. **Pros:** - **Powerful reporting:** Provides customizable dashboards and advanced reporting capabilities, enabling businesses to gain deep insights into their financial performance. - **Scalable user access:** Supports up to 25 users, accommodating larger teams and complex organizational structures. - **Automation and customization:** Offers workflow automation, custom access controls, and data restoration, streamlining processes and ensuring data security. **Cons:** - **High cost:** The monthly price may be too expensive for many small and medium-sized businesses, making it suitable only for larger enterprises. Complexity:** To fully utilize the advanced features and customization options, significant technical expertise and training may be required. - **Potential overkill:** Some businesses may not require all the features offered in this plan, leading to paying for unused functionality. __Conclusion__ After analyzing the pricing plans offered by QuickBooks Online, it's evident that there are options designed to cater to businesses of various sizes and complexities. - **For solopreneurs and small startups:** The Simple Start Plan provides an affordable entry point. While it includes essential features like bookkeeping automation and invoice processing, its limitations may be felt as the business grows. - **For established small and midsized businesses:** The Plus Plan strikes a balance between robust features and reasonable cost. With advanced reporting, inventory management, and project profitability tracking, it empowers businesses to gain deeper insights and make data-driven decisions. The ability to connect all online sales channels also streamlines operations and saves valuable time. - **Enterprises and rapidly scaling businesses:** The Advanced Plan is tailored for larger organizations with more sophisticated accounting needs. Its powerful customization options, workflow automation, and enhanced access controls enable businesses to fine-tune their financial management processes. The inclusion of 25 users accommodates larger teams, while 24/7 support and training ensures prompt assistance whenever needed. Ultimately, the choice of plan depends on factors such as business size, growth trajectory, feature requirements, and budgetary considerations. By carefully evaluating these aspects and aligning them with QuickBooks Online's offerings, businesses can select a plan that optimizes their financial operations and sets the stage for long-term success. Moreover, the 30-day free trial provides an opportunity to explore the platform's capabilities firsthand, ensuring a well-informed decision.

Overall, the app is fairly good value for money, particularly during the initial period. Features for the self-employed version are however limited, lacking customisation (e.g. expense categories etc) and poorly adaptable to different kinds of businesses. The sync functionality with bank is very disappointing. There is no way to reliably set up what is relevant and how to record different suppliers, no chance to have categories remembered, even when defining defaults. Not very satisfied.

Reasons for choosing QuickBooks Online

Unfavorable rate increases led to my breakup with QuickBooks

3

There's a reason it's a leader in the fintech industry. It's easy to use, and has a variety of products. I liked how responsive they were when I needed support troubleshooting. As much as I appreciate the positioning with NYC SBS years ago, while developing my consultancy, QuickBooks left me feeling like "wow, I thought we were friends." With the increases year after year, to an extreme amount, we definitely are not friends.

Pros:
What I most liked about Quickbooks online, as a small business [sensitive content hidden] was the product represented in important educational seminars and learning experiences through NYC Small Business Services. That eased anxiety with using the fintech solution.
Cons:
The increases became so extreme I had to stop using QuickBooks. I don't consider this scalable or a good use of budget any longer, and I don't feel valued as a small business [sensitive content hidden] . We're just not the same as mid-level or large organizations, which is especially true for independent consultants.

Reasons for switching to QuickBooks Online

I was A/B testing a variety of fintech solutions during the initial stages of launching my independent consultancy.

Add to this the incessant attempts to upsell me to services I have no interest in and have refused for literally years.
