Seafile performs commendably well as a self-hosting cloud solution with its incredible user experience & features offered across all connected devices. Assigning users, drive clients, sharing data among users, file versioning & access controls are brilliantly implemented in Seafile to ensure optimal usability & convenience, thus effectively making our workspace more manageable without interruptions.

Pros:
Whether our team is designing an architectural plan on a single CAD file on our shared cloud drive, or simply transfering or modifying modifying files on the go, this open-source utility has by far been the greatest user experience regarding data management & collaboration. I've set up a 2TB NAS drive connected to my Seafile account & from there, I was quickly able to establish drive clients for our project team to access our files directly from our company computers & smartphones. Creating & assigning users with access privileges to specific directories can be done effortlessly to ensure that the data remain intact without unintentional tampering. Moreover, transferring data from a desktop computer or mobile has been blazing fast on our 2.5 gigabit office ethernet & the user interface deserves a lot of praise for its snappy performance & features to modify & share files across connected users & groups at our office.
Cons:
My project team & I have zero complaints regarding the functionality & overall usability of the software. It works perfectly well.

Reasons for choosing Seafile

Being able to increase our NAS storage & utilize our data from our own cloud drive without needing to pay additional annual subscription fees compelled our team to use Seafile.

Reasons for switching to Seafile

The flexibility in managing users & data and the cost-saving measures benefitted from using Seafile made the most sense to make the switch.

Superfast and reliably sync and share solution

Sharing files in the team is the main purpose. We need control of our data, and we want to have the ability to manage who has access to the files.

Pros:
Seafile does not require a lot of training. After configuring the synchronisation in the seafile client (available for windows, linux and mac) the client is working without any problems in the background. Changes on the clients or the server are detected fast and the synchronisation starts immediately.
Cons:
The first implementation was not straightforward. The documentation is not that clear and precise. Important hints are hidden in the update notes or some parameters are not documented at all. On the contrary, after the initial setup, seafile is running without any problems.

Reasons for choosing Seafile

nextcloud offers to much stuff, we don't need. Also the synchronisation is not that fast and reliable.

Seafile just works and does it's job in the background. For my family, files are magically backed up and shared between computers with no issues.

Pros:
The client is simple and easy to use. Files are synced in a timely manner, always correct and have no issues. I use a local server running Seafile on Linux with a Docker container. Seafile sends the files to the server in real-time for document management (and the server does backups). Simple enough for my wife and kids to use for pictures, videos, school work (we homeschool) and documents. Previously we used Perforce (I am a software engineer), but that was too complicated for my family. Seafile is great replacement.
Cons:
Version history is a little weak. I would like more control over what is kept and what is overwritten. Automated backups would be a great addition.

Reasons for choosing Seafile

Cost. I already had a local server and prefer to keep my data out of the cloud. I also have many music and video files. Storing all that in the cloud, for a family of 7, gets expensive really fast. With Seafile on a local server, I maintain control over my data and saved lots of money (for the price of the online services, I could buy a new server and backup drives every year and still be cheaper).

Reasons for switching to Seafile

Perforce is great and I use it a work, but at home it was overkill. Perforce replaced scripts that ran to copy files across the network to a local server. Seafile keeps the simplicity of file copies (instead of encrypted/databased files) so backup restoration is simple.

Fast and reliable file storage with full control over business data

5

Easy to use, flexible setup of folder sync pairs (synced folders do not have to be located within a single overarching directory as is the case for many alternative solutions).

Ratings Breakdown

Pros:
Speed and reliabilty of file synchronization. Changes to files are synced more or less instantaneously after hitting save which gives peace of mind that my business-critical project files are backed up without any effort from my side.
Cons:
Personally I would appreicate an option to share libraries as Samba shares so I can mount libraries as a network drive without syncing them to my laptop. WebDav limits file transfers to 4GB per file which is too low for my use case.

Reasons for choosing Seafile

Option to host an instance on my own infrastructure. This makes it easier to comply with GDPR regulations regarding sensitive data since I do not have to rely on US-based cloud providers.

Reasons for switching to Seafile

Unreliable and slow file synchronization via Nextcloud Client application.

Really Fast, Reliable, File Synchronization

5

I've been using Seafile for a few years now. I have never had issues with files getting corrupted (looking at you, Nextcloud!). The OnlyOffice integration works well and is really handy for editing documents right in your browser. Seafile also supports WebDAV, which makes it easy to edit documents using Microsoft Office on my mobile phone.

Pros:
I love how fast it does synchronization. It's also fairly low-maintenance once it is set up properly. I love that I can integrate OnlyOffice into it.
Cons:
The setup can be a little difficult at first. The documentation detailing the setup is pretty decent, but you have to know which parts to use and which to ignore.

Reasons for switching to Seafile

Nextcloud looks nice and has lots of features, but it feels very unfinished. The many features feel half-baked, so that doesn't really end up with any points in their favor. I have had many files corrupted using Nextcloud.

Great Alternative to Dropbox - for teams as well as individual use

Pros:
I was looking for a solution that would provide Dropbox-like features to my team of some 25: * Robust syncing and sharing * Multi plattform support Seafile fit the bill spot on. Syncing and sharing works like a charm, no matter what platform or hardware. It is robust, reliable and fast. Just like I got to know Dropbox over the past years. What I was not expecting to get, but what we started liking a lot is the integration with a online editor. It gives Seafile all you know from Google Docs: You can work simultaneously on one and the same office document straight from the browser. All edits are transmitted in real time to all co-editors. No local editor needed. (We are using OnlyOffice as a document server. We also tried Collabora, but Only Office has a much nicer UI and better compatability.)
Cons:
Installing Seafile is not as simple as using it. It takes a little effort to get it up and running. (OnlyOffice integration is easy thanks to the provided Docker container) Seafile's folder and user administration lacks some simple features that you would normally expect to facilitate system administration (i.e., sorting, filters, customizable table views) .

Pros:
I love Seafile! It is a great alternative to Dropbox that I can host myself and own my own data. Has many great features like being able to share an upload link for others to send you files.
Cons:
A bit of a learning curve to set up if you aren't a system administrator, but the documentation is really well made.
