A Perspective from 20 Years in Heavy Truck

We approach Geotab from a different perspective than many. We have been doing professional services training, implementing, and supporting Transportation Management Systems for 20 years. We have worked with all the major competitors in that time, including Qualcomm/OmniTracs, PeopleNet/Trimble, KeepTrucking/Motive, Samsara, Platform Science, Orbcomm, and others.Geotab is a unique product. We have found it is able to solve business challenges we never through possible, like fully real-time updates and alerts within seconds of a driver situation in the field or being able to re-analyze and report data in arrears months or years after the fact, like building a zone around a section of a terminal parking lot and seeing which drivers *ever* entered that space.While we still provide integration for all the major players, we have been able to create more custom solutions and solve more business challenges with Geotab than any other Telematics system to date, and we look forward to ever-increasing capabilities and features from their team.

Geotab captures and aggregates real-world data like no other system we've ever seen. You can watch a truck pulling out of the parking lot in real-time or look back a year ago at exactly how a driver backed into a dock over multiple attempts. You can reconstruct what happened in an accident second-by-second, or re-evaluate all the times your drivers entered or exited a specific location over the entire history of your database on the fly.They also believe the data is *yours*, to keep and use as you see fit, and give full access to their system through a completely open API. The user interface is full-featured and simple, but beyond that, it can be modified, added to, and changed endlessly, allowing you to improve the visibility and access to information you find valuable. It is a system that is uniquely unlike any other we've used in Trucking, a true paradigm shift in the technology of Trucking, and transformative for every customer we've worked with.

Cons:

Their greatest strength is also their kryptonite. The features are so forward looking and Geotab is continually releasing new ones... it can be difficult to keep legacy systems up to speed with them. "Traditional" players (Qualcomm/OmniTracs, PeopleNet/Trimble) defined how data would be fed to back-end systems over 20 years ago, and most Transportation Management Systems still use those patterns today.The quality and volume of Geotab data is in a whole new league. Finding a middle ground to emulate the "Traditional" data feeds while also updating those TMS platforms to use the data available through Geotab is an ongoing challenge, but well worth the effort.

Reasons for switching to Geotab

We have supported customers making a switch from all of the above products and evaluating against multiple competitors. Those customers often found the real-time nature of Geotab to be far different than competitors, and the Marketplace containing extensive custom add-ins that add functionality from partners directly into the user interface (such as Lytx DriveCam) to be incredibly powerful. Additionally, the cost of Geotab was often highly competitive, especially in equipping a fleet. Geotab tended to be significantly less expensive up front than many other systems, and equipping it was a process that took 15 minutes or less per vehicle.

Automating Fleet Cost Management Infrastructure

The cooperation with Geotab has greatly changed the whole idea of fleet management at the company. By means of an easily navigable dashboard, the platform encompasses all the necessary information about vehicle activity, drivers, and fuel rates.

Meanwhile, engine data and environmental monitoring enable you to find out what might be wrong with the vehicle before it requires a major repair. Sophisticated data analysis of fuel consumption integrated with driving behavior, route planning, and control of idle time to give tangible recommendations on minimizing fuel use on the vehicles in the fleet.

Cons:

If there are many vehicles in the area, for example, in the center of large cities, the map interface may sometimes freeze. Small growth in content customization for automated report frames. Some of the features that are included in the desktop version are, however, missing in the mobile app.

Reasons for switching to Geotab

From Truckin Digital we have migrated to another platform to provide the efficient credit risk assessment based on advanced analytics we require. Although Truckin Digital offered simple GPS navigation, it could not offer fuel consumption analytics and, more importantly, the predictive maintenance functionality of Geotab.

Best Safety Complaint Transportation Software

Geotab is FMCSA compliant and user friendly. Customer service is always ready to help (even for customization stuff). They have a crazy amount of awesome apps to add into your software for fuel stops, mapping/ trip planning, etc.... trust me, you'll have a blast piecing stuff together. You have full control to either turn on/ off, add or deactivate many extra items.

This is the best safety complaint Transportation software you will ever use for ELD's, live tracking and so much more... You will Love it!!! ELD Logs are in color and highlighted to display violations for easy viewing. Makes managing your drivers and fleet so easy at a cost that's beats the competitors.

No Cons to mention. I love everything about Geotab!

Poor Beta version

Poor, bad data conversion to Beta, poor help desk. Lots of "no we cannot change that" or sorry the program is in complete.

Nothing comes to mind, stuck how much the Beta version had increased my work load

Cons:

Very difficult to use the Maintenance section, too many steps, not enough editing features.

Geotab - a fantastic GPS & fleet mgmt program

Geotab is user-friendly interface and straightforward design. Geotab has live videos so you can see and track your asset in real time. It has helped improved our fleet management.

Solid Option for Smaller Fleets

We had a positive overall experience with Geotab – it's a dependable, cost-effective platform with a strong feature set. For tech-savvy teams or smaller fleets, it offers great value, but for our specific needs, Samsara’s simplicity and streamlined UX made it a better fit.

Geotab had lower upfront costs compared to our current provider, Samsara, while still offering many comparable features. If you are tech-savvy, it’s a solid, scalable solution – especially for smaller fleets. We never experienced any major issues with the hardware or software, and the GPS tracking was consistently reliable.

Cons:

While Geotab’s core functionality was strong, we found that Samsara delivered a more streamlined and intuitive experience, which proved essential for managing our large fleet of independent contractors. Geotab often required additional setup, third-party plugins, or multiple apps to achieve what Samsara offers out of the box. For example, Samsara combines ELD, DVIR, dispatch, and document submission into a single, easy-to-use driver app, whereas Geotab relied on multiple apps. Geotab’s more modular approach offered flexibility, but lacked the cohesion and simplicity we needed. Its UI was also a bit less intuitive, and felt a bit clunkier and more difficult for our dispatchers and drivers to navigate. It's a bit like comparing Android to Apple: Geotab gives you lots of control and customization, while Samsara delivers a more polished, user-friendly experience right away. For our dispatchers and drivers, that ease of use made a big difference in our day-to-day operations, but your mileage may vary.

Helps You Stay on Top of Everything

Overall, it’s been a really solid experience. Once we got past the learning curve, Geotab became a go-to tool for managing our vehicles and improving efficiency. The support team has also been quick to respond when we had questions. It’s made a noticeable difference in how we run our operations.

I really liked how easy it was to see everything going on with our fleet in one place. The real-time tracking is super helpful, and the reports gave us great insight into things like fuel usage and driver behavior. It helped us make smarter decisions quickly.

Cons:

The platform can feel a bit overwhelming at first—there are so many features that it takes some time to get used to. Some of the more advanced tools aren’t very intuitive, so we had to spend time learning or asking for help.
