First and foremost, it is an on-premise and cloud-based network monitoring solution. It caters to businesses of all sizes (across multiple industry verticals) and is compatible with Windows 7 or later. Primary features include bandwidth monitoring, alerts, data publishing, customization support, and reporting. PRTG monitors your entire IT infrastructure and all important technologies are supported, such as: SNMP, WMI and Windows Performance Counters, SSH, Traffic analysis using flow protocols or packet sniffing, HTTP requests, REST APIs returning XML or JSON, Ping, SQL, and many more. PRTG Is a Great Tool for many Organizations

PRTG brings a lot of value to our organization and it works well to notify our Department immediately when something is down. We have a critical need for this. Some of the user interface and customization for alerts could be better though.

Pros:

PRTG works on Mac or PC! I can set it up to alert me only on certain items in my org tree by priority, and it works 100% and I don't ever miss notifications.

Cons:

Some alert settings could be more customizable or paused for a certain time period easier. The user interface could be setup a little cleaner and up to date.

PRTG helps to keep an eye on a real-time network in use for an event

Tracking local network devices at an event, and with notifications when something is offline have greatly helped to reduce the stress of keeping an eye on device uptime. a local overview of the network has been a great tool

Pros:

there's a lot to it, as such, it covers alot of ground. I'm sure there are templates and possibly scripting that I haven't explored or discovered, but what I have used for monitoring remote events has worked really well.

Cons:

there's a bit of learning curve, and as time permits, I hope to eventually get to dig into it. An intro at maybe a simpler level would be nice, with maybe an incentive track to learn more in-depth usage

Proactive Network Management Made Easy

The overview that PRTG provides about network health and performance is incredibly important in detecting and resolving a possible security threat at its quickest. This proactive approach reduces our downtime a great deal and increases our overall security posture.

PRTG really excels at providing detailed network visibility. Customizable dashboards and real-time alerting enable strong security. The way this integrates with other existing systems, with deep reporting, makes my proactive management of risk much easier.

Cons:

While PRTG is feature-rich, the initial setup may be a little time-consuming. It would be nice if there were more streamlined configuration options for quicker deployment.

As you mentioned, the central PRTG server can only be installed on a Windows server. But, once you've installed the PRTG server, you can use the brand-new multi-platform probe (a remote probe type in PRTG) that also runs on Linux. With this probe, you can monitor and manage your complete IT infrastructure from your Linux system. I hope this helps. Best, Your Paessler Team
