About Lectora

Lectora Online is a cloud-based learning management solution that provides small to large enterprises with authoring tools to design, publish, and deliver courses on multiple platforms. It enables users to collaborate with team members and automatically track revised content using versioning capabilities.

Lectora Online allows businesses to import/export question banks on the platform and embed quizzes or media files into formative assessments. Managers can access various digital assets including photos, videos, templates, and sound effects from the in-built media library. Additionally, it comes with an administrative dashboard, which lets users assign projects to reviewers and send request notifications to team members, streamlining approval processes.

With Lectora’s authoring tool, you can jump-start course creation by converting your files from PowerPoint, using the AI Course Wizard to instantly generate courses for you, or by integrating templates or assets. All courses are easily customizable, with accessibility functions, meeting the Section 508 & WCAG 2.2 requirements, and a responsive design, to ensure an optimal learning experience for everyone.

Lectora allows organiza...

tions to use SCORM, xAPI, HTML5, AICC, and cmi5 to publish content across multiple external platforms, such as CourseMill, Healthstream, Docebo, and SABA. With Lectora, you can also collaborate or integrate VR, games, screen recordings, and other assets. Administrators can provide a secure user experience by setting up role-based permission rights and maintaining compliance with web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG).

Pros:
The biggest pro to Lectora is the committment to accessiblity. Lectora makes meeting DHS Trusted Tester requirements easy! I also love that you can truly develop responsive courses rather than just a player being responsive and shrinking things down as that isn't accesssible.
Cons:
The QuickLaunch Toolbar on the new interface can be a bit difficult to see what is what as it is very dark and blends in.

Reasons for choosing Lectora

My focus is on accessiblity and responsiveness and these items are just so much easier in Lectora than 360 or Captivate. I can technically "pass" using the other tools, but it isn't a pleasant experience for someone using a screenreader.

Pros:
The interface is super easy to use and provides quick access to advanced features. I usually work from a blank page or corporate template where I have complete control of design and programming. Adding actions to objects is very helpful. The properties ribbon gives me quick access to all the information I need. There is often many ways to do something and I can easily experiment to find the best method. Adding exams, surveys, knowledge checks, progress bars, custom menus, variables, HTML windows, and JavaScript, are all easy to do. If you want to create adaptive courses to personalize learning, Lectora is by far the easiest program to use.
Cons:
With power comes a few caveats. Occasionally a deleted action does not get deleted. The solution is to rebuild the action using a different name. Moving an object using xy coordinates is easy, but there is no easy way of detecting those coordinates. Having that feature would make designing games much easier. The recent addition of Elearning Brothers assets is great. I just wish the search feature worked better. After each search you have to start from the beginning. There is no way to select multiple objects or save searches.

Reasons for switching to Lectora

Lectora gives me more control of the end product.

Vendor Response

Thank you for underscoring the flexibility of Lectora to build content in multiple ways and the extensibility to incorporate other web technologies. Your points are fantastic! We also forwarded your feedback to our product team. We greatly value long-time users like you and want you to know we are committed to continuous innovation and improvement.

I used Lectora between Flash-era e-learning and mobile-first e-learning. I am thankful for the knowledge it provided about variables as I move forward into other programs. It's like the C++ of the coding world—wouldn't want to use it but thankful for its foundation.

Pros:
Lectora can be robust with complex, nested interactivity and can tackle a large product. It is highly customizable and provides professional results.
Cons:
What I like least about Lectora is that it can sometimes be buggy, which interrupts workflow and slows projects down. The learning curve can also feel steep, especially with the more advanced features, making it a bit overwhelming at times. In addition, while the responsive design tools are helpful, it isn’t very easy to retrofit older, page-size–specific courses into a truly mobile-friendly format. This makes updating legacy content more challenging than expected.

Lectora Review

We have used Lectora for over 10 years and find it to be the most stable authoring software, and the most flexible if we need to add additional programming outside of what is available within Lectora.

Pros:
This is the most powerful and flexible authoring software, although there is a learning curve. It is great for those that are responsible for developing eLearning.
Cons:
Support has not been as responsive as they used to be. However, now that ELB is in charge, I'm sure that will change for the better. When new updates are released, there can be problems when updating older courses because the new programming does not always match to previous programming.

Reasons for choosing Lectora

We use both Lectora and Storyline, but my personal preference is Lectora.

Vendor Response

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and for highlighting one of Lectora's greatest strengths, the flexibility to meet any learning need. Customer support is also very important to us. In addition to making continuous improvements to Lectora, we are committed to providing an exceptional customer experience, and look forward to demonstrating that commitment first hand.

Lectora, a decent middling software package.

Decent for what it is. Limited and you can tell there hasn't been a ton of development into it over the years. Probably best thing ELB has done when they purchased it.

Pros:

Cons:
Its not free, but seriously no authroing tool can be all things, so Lectora has very few limitations (I cannot think of any) but if all you want is a page of text with image and few simple clicks, then go and get something for free - or build something in google slides.

Lectora Inspire comes with a lot of great add-ins that make creating a course quick and easy.

The great add-ins from buying the software: BranchTrack, eLearning Brothers, Camtasia, Snagit, and Reviewlink. They also seem to be the best software for 508 compliance.

Pros:
Probably the add-ins that come along with your purchase of Lectora. This includes eLearning Brothers that has templates, cut out people, and stock images that you can easily add to your course. They also have BranchTrack where you can create scenarios quickly. Camtasia is great for all your audio needs. Cutting and editing video has never been so easy. Reviewlink is a great way to show your end product to your stakeholders. They can offer feedback per slide and you can easily remediate.
Cons:
My representative doesn't always get back to me in a timely manner. There seems to be a lot of back-and-forth when it comes to emailing customer support. Knowing that every slide inherits properties, images, etc. from the parent slide can be a pain because you have to tell the software what NOT to inherit.
