About PBXact

Schmooze Com, Inc. is the developer and corporate sponsor of FreePBX, which is a distribution of the open-source Asterisk telephony platform. True to its name, FreePBX is indeed free for businesses possessing the IT experience to deploy the system, but Schmooze Com also sells a commercial phone system for businesses that need additional features and support.

PBXact is Schmooze Com’s on-premise system, while PBXtended is a cloud-based version of the system. Unlimited extensions are available with both versions of the system. PBXact can also support connections to the traditional phone network, such as analog and T1 lines.

PBXact and PBXtended offer a number of standard PBX features, such as caller ID, call forwarding and find me/follow me (which forwards calls to mobile devices when employees are out of the office). The system also offers call queues for contact centers.

Add-on modules include a desktop client for managing presence information (XactView) and an auto dialer for contact centers (XactDialer).

    For the first time I set it up, I've hardly had an issue with it. And when I have, it was never a major issue with PBXact. Setup was simple and preventative maintenance has been a breeze.

    The service is easy to use and deploy in pretty much any use case. It's based on Asterisk and can easily be deployed on premises or in the cloud, whether it be hosted by a third party or directly. The service is fairly affordable and provides many helpful features for all businesses, from inbound dialing features and outbound route restrictions, to endpoint management and XML-API scripts to allow endpoints access to extra features. With one flat upfront fee, the service is easy to use and will last for a long time. In all, the service is great and easy to use, and there is a lot of extra documentation and plenty of videos online that provide a great example of the service.
    Cons:
    My biggest quarrel with the product has always been price vs. usage. Not all businesses need the same features, so having one service with all of the same features and charging the same price no matter what can be a bit of a put off for certain people. Fortunately, there is, sort of, a free version. Though not branded the same, FreePBX is the base of PBXact, even offering the same features and keeping the CLI and event viewer the exact same. FreePBX offers most of the features of PBXact for free, but for the ones that are not, they can be purchased as cost per module.

    Cost and features. It makes more sense in my line of work to purchase the equipment and the services and own them for good, not license them out month to month or year to year.

    Free = Simply not the best

    FreePBX may attract many because of the name, but overall experience has been less than average. There are too many competitive solution providers in the UCaaS space today that provide a better suite of integration, e911, paging, e-fax, collaboration, MMS, Texting and free phones that have a better overall ROI (return on investment). If you're looking at FreePBX, look elsewhere for something that will serve you and your school or organization better long term.

    Pros:
    Simple integration for legacy Cisco on premise solutions, but lacking too much to consider for all the added costs like SIP trunking and support
    Cons:
    Limited API integration, SIP trunk costs, support costs, limited support documentation, limited integration into needed advanced applications, like MS Teams, Google G-Suite, and no geo redundant failover. Too many hidden costs and lack of support

    Reasons for choosing PBXact

    At the time it was cost, but in the end it we would have better served spending more money to get a better product and solution.

    Reasons for switching to PBXact

    At the time it was pre-covid and it made sense, but once we were on the solution we quickly saw all the short comings and immediately regretted our decision. We tried to make it work, but in the end this was just a failed platform. We have since moved on.
